This essential textbook presents the basics of dental statistics in an accessible way, combining explanation in non-technical language with key messages, practical examples, suggestions for further reading and exercises complete with detailed solutions. There is an emphasis on the principles and application of statistics without the use of algebra. The statistical material is strongly rooted in practical examples drawn from a wide range of journal articles representing both dental health care delivery and clinical dentistry. The perspective is international, with papers drawn from a variety of settings around the world. Many articles are recent and report contemporary developments in dental care. The intended audience includes dental students and practitioners, those engaged in dental research and other health care professionals. For students and tutors, it covers the undergraduate curriculum, and the exercises and solutions make it ideal for course use. For practitioners and researchers it provides the first principles of study design, accessing the dental literature, and the preparation and publication of original dental research.
The Gift: A Memoir of Life Before, and After Stroke

'The Gift' describes briefly how its author, Nigel Williams, came to be the person who suffered a catastrophic brain hemorrhage on August 18, 2005, and then focuses on what he and his newlywed wife Dorothea did about it: their pursuit of a self-devised rehabilitation program, in the absence of effective medical alternatives, their activities on behalf of fellow patients, and their successful battles with post-stroke central pain syndrome, and with the depression linked to it. Leading neuroscientist Professor John Krakauer, of Johns Hopkins University, describes in a foreword the full extent of Nigel's injuries, the unusual nature of his recovery, and the sorry state of stroke rehabilitation in the United States. Thereafter, the first part of 'The Gift' tells the story of Nigel's recovery from his viewpoint, and the second part contains Dorothea's observations on Nigel's narrative. The first three chapters of 'The Gift' move us briskly from the two bright starbursts that were Nigel's first indication that he was having a brain hemorrhage, through six weeks of acute care in hospital, to his return home, his commencement of outpatient rehabilitation, and the marriage of Nigel and Dorothea. Chapters 4 and 5 then cover the previous thirty-five years, of first love at Oxford University, a highflying career, and two marriages, leading up to Nigel's meeting with Dorothea. Chapter 6 returns us to the present, and tracks Nigel's and Dorothea's progress in his rehabilitation over the next five years. Chapters 7 and 8 address their response to a major Manhattan hospital's request that they share the lessons from their unconventional rehabilitation approach with patients and caregivers, which they did through literally scores of group talks and peer visits, described selectively in the two chapters. Finally, two further chapters describe how Nigel and Dorothea came to grips with the unending post-stroke central pain that Nigel suffers, and with the depression that invisibly came to weigh on them both, though they recognized it only dimly at the time. Dorothea's perspective in part two of 'The Gift' makes clear the huge role that the caregiver plays in successful brain injury rehabilitation, and the effort that this requires. As both of them remind us, an essential part of recovery is frequent, large doses of laughter along the way.

A hard hitting account of a beat copper's life on the streets of Swansea in the 60's, 70's and 80's, based on the author's own experience. Fresh from his time in the Royal Marines and a secondment to Bletchley Park, Probabtioner Constable Frank Dix is determined to make a career for himself in the Swansea Borough police and nothing will stop him.. NO STEP BACK. "Gene Hunt from Life on Mars is a softie compared to Frank Dix." "Full of humour and grit, this is a police memoir with a difference." "They don't make policemen like Frank Dix anymore, more's the pity." Is this fact or fiction? Alan Lloyd, with the masterful assistance of accomplished writer Nigel Williams, tells a tale of life in the Swansea police in days of old, when the town was a tough seaport. As both Alan and Nigel are former police officers, this book is lent more than a hint of realism - fact or fiction? I will leave you to decide, but one thing is for sure, this is a book you will struggle to put down until the very end. NO STEP BACK was the inspiration for the Frank Dix series of crime thrillers by Nigel C. Williams: A HARD PLACEA COLD PLACENigel C. Williams is a lecturer in fine art, having served as a police officer in both the Metropolitan Police from 1981-1984 and South Wales from 1984-1995.During his service he was a VIP and Special Escort Group armed, advanced driver. In 1995, he was struck by a stolen vehicle and fractured his spine. He studied fine art at Swansea whilst he recovered from his injury and achieved a first class honours degree. While preserving the clear, accessible style of previous editions, Applied Nonparametric Statistical Methods, Fourth Edition reflects the latest developments in computer-intensive methods that deal with intractable analytical problems and unwieldy data sets. Reorganized and with additional material, this edition begins with a brief summary of some relevant general statistical concepts and an introduction to basic ideas of nonparametric or distribution-free methods. Designed experiments, including those with factorial treatment structures, are now the focus of an entire chapter. The text also expands coverage on the analysis of survival data and the bootstrap method. The new final chapter focuses on important modern developments, such as large sample methods and computer-intensive applications.Keeping mathematics to a minimum, this text introduces nonparametric methods to undergraduate students who are taking either mainstream statistics courses or statistics courses within other disciplines. By giving the proper attention to data collection and the interpretation of analyses, it provides a full introduction to nonparametric methods.
Urological Emergencies in Clinical Practice

The specialty of urology has evolved into a less surgical and more cognitive discipline. Indeed, most of what we do in our daily cl- ical practice involves nonoperative patient care. However many of our patients present with, what are perceived as, emergencies. Such ‘emergencies’ encompass a broad spectrum of diagnoses, ranging from the often mundane hematuria and orchalgia to the more striking renal colic, symptomatic urinary retention, Fournier’s gangrene and testicular torsion, to name but a few. Frequently these emergencies require swift but prudent ju- ment in order to achieve a satisfactory outcome. Despite the plethora of these daily encountered ‘emergencies,’ their descriptions are diluted in the voluminous urologic te- books available. By assembling this textbook speci?cally on urologic emergencies, these distinguished authors have cont- buted a unique and valuable addition to our urologic literary armamentarium. Their objectives are to present diagnostic and treatment-oriented information that can be accessed rapidly and ef?ciently. These goals are accomplished without comprising thoroughness. The book consists of 10 broad chapters divided into speci?c sections making the information easily retrievable. Diagrams and photographs are incorporated appropriately to highlight important points. Diagnostic and therapeutic tips of practical signi?cance are offered throughout the book. This superb or- nizational format provides a clear, logical and ef?cient approach to urologic emergencies and should serve as a principal reference for any physician dealing which these ubiquitous problems. I congratulate the authors and am con?dent that their gallant efforts will serve to better educate physicians and ultimately improve patient care.
Artificial Neural Nets and Genetic Algorithms

Artificial neural networks and genetic algorithms both are areas of research which have their origins in mathematical models constructed in order to gain understanding of important natural processes. By focussing on the process models rather than the processes themselves, significant new computational techniques have evolved which have found application in a large number of diverse fields. This diversity is reflected in the topics which are subjects of the contributions to this volume. There are contributions reporting successful applications of the technology to the solution of industrial/commercial problems. This may well reflect the maturity of the technology, notably in the sense that 'real' users of modelling/prediction techniques are prepared to accept neural networks as a valid paradigm. Theoretical issues also receive attention, notably in connection with the radial basis function neural network. Contributions in the field of genetic algorithms reflect the wide range of current applications, including, for example, portfolio selection, filter design, frequency assignment, tuning of nonlinear PID controllers. These techniques are also used extensively for combinatorial optimisation problems.
David's War Volume One

It was during the Summer of 2020 that James McCarraher (pronounced 'Mac-arra-her') was entrusted by his Uncle Colin with a small, precious canvas folder containing over one hundred photographic negatives taken by his late Uncle David McCarraher during the Second World War. The folder was marked 'Kenya, Ceylon, Germany' but most intriguingly, David had catalogued the content of each individual negative, taken between 1941 and 1945. James contacted David's youngest daughter, his cousin Jane who revealed that she held over two hundred letters written by David during this period which had been saved by his mother. Jane's older sister, Vera confirmed that she had further photographs and so with the kindness of David's family, the entire collection was re-united thus enabling David's war time story to be told in his own words and pictures. This first volume picks up with David as an evacuee, fulfilling his role as 'Pike' in the L.D.V. (precursor to the Home Guard) and Head Boy of his school before joining H.M.S. Royal Arthur and training as an Ordinary Coder (the first in his family to join the Royal Navy) prior to being dispatched to the far flung reaches of the British Empire. David's letters capture the mood of the time and are rich in socio-historical elements as well as sensitive personal flourishes as we witness his passage into adulthood, shaped by war and life in the Royal Navy.
Annotated C# Standard

Standards, while being definitive, do not usually serve as the best reference to the use of a programming language. Books on languages usually are able to explain usage better, but lack the definitive precision of a standard. Annotated C# Standard combines the two; it is the standard with added explanatory material.

"From Biplane to Boeing" tells the story of my father's life in flying. The book is based almost entirely on his personal logbooks and notebooks which he maintained all the way through his career, logging the detail of every flight. Wing Commander Walter Hillary, DFC., DFM, was taught to fly by the Royal Air Force and went on to fly more than 80 missions with Bomber Command and with Transport. His war was in Europe, North Africa and Burma (now Myanmar). After World War II he pursued a career in Civil Aviation for over 30 years across Africa, flying passengers in Kenya, the Belgian Congo and Libya. The book is my personal tribute to my Dad. It provides evidence for the courage and adaptability of that whole generation.
