The Numinous Effect: A Spiritual Journey

The Numinous Effect: A Spiritual Journey

Joan Elizabeth

R. R. Bowker

When the author decides to tell her father about a one-time sexual assault on her when she was younger, her decision to do so will be the thread that unravels the family fabric. It is a dilemma that comes with the challenge of testing the frail bonds of her family's love and loyalty. It will be a decision that cuts through the family's fa ade of normalcy. Her choice to confront her father will dramatically turn her world upside down and take her on a journey making her question everything she knows about life, religion and herself. It's a choice that will ultimately transform and lead her to new life. "A Numinous Effect is a candid and poignant testimony to the power of faith and resolution to deal with difficult and damaging life-altering problems. The author very vividly captures her revealing evolution which, while personal, strikes a universal chord." -Jack Adler Writer's Digest "A true journey of spiritual growth and deepening consciousness, Joan Elizabeth tells her story both fiercely and courageously. Her truthfulness is startling at times, allowing us to see her unfolding, and often painful, path of healing and, thus, finding herself. This witnessing to the fullness of truth should encourage others who read it to find hope and strength as they face their own demons, moving from shame to transformation." -- Janet E. Corso, spiritual director

The author traces the development of Rudolf Otto’s attempt to construct a normative science of religion. This should respond to concerns facing Protestant theologians in Germany at the turn of the century. Moreover, he examines the reception of Otto’s ideas after World War One. The volume contains name and subject indexes.

The Vampire as Numinous Experience

The Vampire as Numinous Experience

Beth E. McDonald

The critical work examines the vampire as a spiritual figure--whether literal or metaphorical--analyzing how the use of the vampire in literature has served to convey both a human sense of alienation from the divine and a desire to overcome that alienation. While expressing isolation, the vampire also represents the transcendent agent through which individuals and societies must confront questions about innate good or evil, and belief in the divine and the afterlife. Textual experiences of the numinous in the form of the vampire propel the subject on a spiritual journey involving both psychological and religious qualities. Through this journey, the reader and the main character may begin to understand the value of their existence and the divine. A variety of works, poetry and fiction by British and American authors, is discussed, with particular concentration on Coleridge's "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner," Bram Stoker's Dracula, and Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles, as representative of the Romantic, Victorian, and late twentieth century periods of literature. A conclusion looks at the future of the literary vampire.
Nature and the Numinous in Mythopoeic Fantasy Literature
This book makes connections between mythopoeic fantasy--works that engage the numinous--and the critical apparatuses of ecocriticism and posthumanism. Drawing from the ideas of Rudolf Otto in The Idea of the Holy, mythopoeic fantasy is a means of subverting normative modes of perception to both encounter the numinous and to challenge the perceptions of the natural world. Beginning with S.T. Coleridge's theories of the imagination as embodied in The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, the book moves on to explore standard mythopoeic fantasists such as George MacDonald, C.S. Lewis, and J.R.R. Tolkien. Taking a step outside these men, particularly influenced by Christianity, the concluding chapters discuss Algernon Blackwood and Ursula Le Guin, whose works evoke the numinous without a specifically Christian worldview.
Marguerite Horner: Numinous
The first publication on British artist Marguerite Horner presents her monochromatic, radiant and accomplished paintings inspired by a trip to Beachwood Canyon, California, and produced in 2023. Numinous presents the monochromatic, radiant and accomplished paintings of British artist Marguerite Horner (b. 1954), inspired by a trip to Beachwood Canyon, California, and produced in 2023. The twenty-one watercolours and two oil paintings which make up the series of the same name depict flat expanses of sand, the sunlit sea, cacti, the silhouettes of distant people seen from above and occasionally American highways. They were first exhibited at the Crypt in St Marylebone Parish Church, London, in October 2023. The first publication on Horner’s work features a foreword by publisher and writer Matt Price, describing the charged, luminous moments depicted in the Numinous series and the significance of the natural world in the artworks. In his essay, multidisciplinary scholar Dr Matthew Holman discusses the setting of California and Horner’s painting style within the context of British and American painting and her previous bodies of work. Her 2017 series Keep Me Safe portrayed her experiences of driving the Chiswick Comboni Missionary Sisters to the Calais ‘Jungle’ refugee camp while her 2022 exhibition Back to Verve showed small-town life and the eerie quiet of suburbia. Numinous builds on her previous series to further explore ideas of landscape, human behaviour and the metaphysical. Through her watercolours and oil paintings, Horner explores the ‘numinous’, a concept defined by Lutheran theologian Rudolf Otto that indicates the presence of divinity. A keen observer, she is interested in the possibility of transcendence in everyday life and places.
One Times One & Other Numinous Stories of Redemption and Loss
14 sinister disturbing gently cynical stories where reality is not good or bad, right or wrong, alive or dead. Everything is one thing without limits either in essence or in our feeble attempts to identify and delimit it with our wonderful words. The stories in this second collection present reality as the wonder of redemption and loss. Some stories are about couples, some not. Some are about an individual's personal existential challenge to survive. Some emerged from somewhere inside the author when he unlocked a hidden door. These fourteen stories embody aspects of the spiritual nature of reality, about the redemptive quality inherent in all human beings. Each story presents some kind of loss in the context of spiritual redemption; hope, ultimate hope, hope for self-redemption; and the inherent dignity of all living creatures. Let each story take you somewhere new where you can consider something about yourself, something about ourselves as humans. About the numinous quality of your own redemption and loss.

The idea of the numinous is often raised in psychoanalytic and psychodynamic contexts, but it is rarely itself subjected to close scrutiny. This volume examines how the numinous has gained currency in the post-modern world, demonstrating how the numinous is no longer confined to religious discourses but is included in humanist, secular and scientific views of the world.Questions of soul and spirit are increasingly being raised in connection with the scientific exploration of the psyche, and especially in the context of psychotherapy. The contributors to this volume are interested in exploring the numinous in the human psyche, in clinical work, world events, anthropology, sociology, philosophy and the humanities. They originate from multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural backgrounds, bringing a variety of approaches to subjects including:Witchcraft: the numinous power of humans.Jung and Derrida: the numinous, deconstruction and myth.Accessing the numinous: Apolline and Dionysian pathways. The role of the numinous in the reception of Jung. The Idea of the Numinous will fascinate all analytical psychologists, psychoanalysts and psychotherapists interested in investigating the overlap between therapeutic and religious interests.

LSD: Doorway to the Numinous

Stanislav Grof

Stanislav Grof’s first 17 years of research into nonordinary states of consciousness induced by LSD and other psychedelics led to a revolutionary understanding of the human psyche. His research was the impetus behind a vastly expanded cartography of the unconscious, including two new realms still unacknowledged by official academic circles--the perinatal domain, which holds memories of the various stages of birth, and the transpersonal domain, which mediates experiential identification with other species and mythic figures, visits to archetypal realms, access to past life memories, and union with the cosmic creative principle. The research presented in this book provides a map of the psyche that is essential for understanding such phenomena as shamanism and near death experiences as well as other nonordinary states of consciousness. This map has led to the development of important new therapies in psychiatry and psychology for treating mental conditions often seen as disease and therefore suppressed by medication. It also provides a new threshold to understanding and entering the numinous realm of spirit.

Finding the Numinous

Analyzing how the mythopoeic fiction of J. R. R. Tolkien and Frank Herbert portray the natural world Finding the Numinous explores the premise that the environments depicted in The Lord of the Rings and the Dune saga are not only for the purpose of world-building rather, these imagined worlds' environments are sacred spaces fundamental to understanding these texts and their authors' purposes. Willow Wilson DiPasquale applies Tolkien's three functions of fantasy—recover, escape, and consolation—to demonstrate how both authors' works are intrinsically connected to their ecocritical messages and overarching moral philosophies. This book also compares Tolkien's Roman Catholic viewpoint with Herbert's Zen Buddhist perspective, arguing that the authors' religious beliefs and biographical, historical, and cultural influences impacted how they chose to craft their creative works and write about nature.Applying various ecocritical positions to the text, Finding the Numinous explores descriptions of the natural landscapes in both authors' texts, as well as the relationships characters and communities have with those natural spaces. As our current society's relationships with nature are increasingly challenged and changed by various ecocrises, DiPasquale convincingly argues, these worlds offer readers various environmental models to critique, to condemn, or, in some cases, to adopt.
