Anatomy of an Orogen: The Apennines and Adjacent Mediterranean Basins
This is the first book in English reviewing and updating the geology of the whole Apennines, one of the recent most uplifted mountains in the world. The Apennines are the place from which Steno (1669) first stated the principles of geology. The Apennines also represent amongst others, the finding/testing sites of processes and products like volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, olistostromes and mélanges (argille scagliose), salinity crisis, geothermal fluids, thrust-top basins, and turbidites (first represented in a famous Leonardo's painting). As such, the Apennines are a testing and learning ground readily accessible and rich of any type of field data. A growing literature is available most of which is not published in widely available journals. The objective of the book is to provide a synthesis of current data and ideas on the Apennines, for the most part simply written and suitable for an international audience. However, sufficient details and in-depth analyses of the various complex settings have been presented to make this material useful to professional scholars and to students of senior university courses.

The Ross Orogen of the Transantarctic Mountains is the part of the orogenic system that formed at the Pacific continental margin of present-day Antarctica. According to a recent hypothesis, this continental margin was created by the rifting and subsequent drift of Laurentia from Gondwana. With an unparalleled breadth and depth of information, this book provides a detailed synthesis of the history of the Ross orogen. In doing so, it incorporates classical studies with discussions of the most recent and controversial research from the international community. The book also includes a comprehensive bibliography and a historical chronology of all expeditions that have worked on the Ross orogen in the Transantarctic Mountains, from the first sightings by Ross in 1840 right up to the present day. This review of the Ross orogen of the Transantarctic Mountains will be valuable to all geologists interested in these episodes in the Earth's history, and to researchers of the geology of Antarctica.

The book is written by international team of specialized geoscentists and represents the current knowledge of the evolution of the Variscan Orogen in Central Europe. After a preface, the geotectonic position of the mountain belt within the supercontinent Pangea and the zoning of the orogen is described (Chapter 1). The birth of the Central European Variscides and the role of the Avalonian and Cadomian orogenic processes as forerunners of the Central European Variscides is presented also in Chapter 1. The big building blocks of the Variscan orogen north and south of the Rheic suture are lined out in detail in the main part of the book (Chapters 2 to 18). After the description of the igneous activity in Permo-Carboniferous time (Chapter 19), neotectonic reactivation (Chapter 20), current models for Variscan orogenic processes (Chapter 21) and the zircon data base (Chapter 22) are briefly characterized. A final major section (Chapters 23 to 29) includes geobiological, palaeontological and palaeoenvironmental data including event stratigraphy relevant for Variscan plate tectonics. The book is written for an international readership of professional geoscientists, of students of natural sciences, and of people interested in the formation and geology of Central Europe.

The book provides a model for the structural evolution of the Himalaya with relevant background information making it easily accessible to earth scientists specializing in other areas. The book is divided into two parts: The first part describes the basic principles of structural geology that are required to understand the evolutionary model described in the second part. The book incorporates some of the commonly ignored structural features, such as Pre-Himalayan rift tectonics, reactivation of faults, simultaneous development of folds and thrust faults, superposed folds, strike-slip faults developed during early and superposed deformation, problems with GPS data, erratic crustal shortening obtained by restoration of deformed sections, etc. The proposed model is essentially based on inversion tectonics and provides answers to some previously unresolved questions. It describes in detail the structure of the Himalaya as a primary arc, with supporting evidence from model deformation under controlled boundary conditions and anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility studies.

In December, 1987, Project 233 of the International Geological Correlation Pro gram hosted an international conference in Nouakchott, Mauritania. Discussions were focused on the "Tectonothermal Evolution Of The West Mrican Orogens And Circum-Atlantic Terrane Linkages". A wealth of new information was pre sented during the conference, and it was apparent that the time was appropriate to prepare a systematic volume dealing with the geology of northwest Mrica. The present volume is an outgrowth of this conference, but is not merely a compilation of the papers presented in Nouakchott. Instead, it represents a coordinated vol ume designed to present a balanced, comprehensive view of our present under standing of West Mrican geology and potential correlations in other Circum-At lantic Paleozoic orogens. We sincerely appreciate the efforts of all the reviewers whose comments have greatly helped to improve the quality of this volume. We also thank the various contributors for their diligence and perseverance in manuscript preparation. The calibre of the present volume is a reflection of their labor. Crustal Evolution and Orogeny

Crustal Evolution and Orogeny

The processes of crustal evolution and orogeny have attracted the earth scientist since the beginning of the last century. Crustal evolution deals with the development of the Earth’s crust since the primeval stage of the planet’s formation. Orogeny represents the period of mountain-building, whereas the orogenesis comprises the processes controlling the development of mountain belts. This text looks at crustal evolution and terrestrial plate tectonics operation from the early Archean to the present day, development of ideas pertaining to accumulations of tectonic models, accounts of structural development in rock of the early Proterozoic age in the northwestern peninsular Indian shield.
