The Apennines are the place from which Steno (1669) first stated the principles of geology. After a preface, the geotectonic position of the mountain belt within the supercontinent Pangea and the zoning of the orogen is described (Chapter 1). The birth of the Central European Variscides and the role of the Avalonian and Cadomian orogenic processes as forerunners of the Central European Variscides is presented also in Chapter 1. The big building blocks of the Variscan orogen north and south of the Rheic suture are lined out in detail in the main part of the book (Chapters 2 to 18). In December, 1987, Project 233 of the International Geological Correlation Pro­ gram hosted an international conference in Nouakchott, Mauritania. Discussions were focused on the "Tectonothermal Evolution Of The West Mrican Orogens And Circum-Atlantic Terrane Linkages". A wealth of new information was pre­ sented during the conference, and it was apparent that the time was appropriate to prepare a systematic volume dealing with the geology of northwest Mrica. The present volume is an outgrowth of this conference, but is not merely a compilation of the papers presented in Nouakchott. Instead, it represents a coordinated vol­ ume designed to present a balanced, comprehensive view of our present under­ standing of West Mrican geology and potential correlations in other Circum-At­ lantic Paleozoic orogens. En mörk kväll i Namibia hamnar Jojo i stora svårigheter när han två gånger samma kväll går steget för långt för att visa sig tuff. En äldre kvinna lägger en förbannelse över honom och Jojo råkar mer illa ut än någon förtjänar. Han möter den angolanske Pedro och får sedan hjälp av ”en ängel” innan han träffar pastor Jan Berg från det lyckliga landet. Landet långt bort, som varken har olidlig värme, torka eller malaria, heter Sverige.Efter oändliga timmar med flyg är de hemma hos den nye svenske­pappan i lilla Alkärr där Jojo nu ska bo. Speed Reading innebär att man bara läser bokens feta stil, vilket är en bantad version av händelser och lämplig för ungdomar som har bråttom och/eller har dåligt tålamod. Läsare som önskar fördjupa sig i beskrivningar och nyanser läser texten som man brukar (även den icke feta stilen). För de som vill suga lite extra på karamellen finns även så kallade läsaruppdrag efter vissa kapitel som är kopplade till textens innehåll. Dessa uppdrag ger utrymme till eftertanke, synpunkter och diskussioner kring händelser i berättelsen. Bokens upplägg gör den lämplig att läsa/arbeta med i klassuppsättning eller som högläsningsbok i grundskolan (från åk 4), eller varför inte hemma.
