Computer-Controlled Systems with Delay is a systematic study of the problems of analysis and synthesis for multidimensional sampled-data (SD) systems with delay. It is based on the frequency polynomial method, in which the concept of a parametric transfer matrix (PTM) plays a key role. Until now, no alternative general methods have been available to solve the above problems. The text is divided into three parts: background information from the theory of polynomial and rational matrices, helps the reader to acquire the basic understanding necessary to use the main content of the book without addressing additional sources; methods for the mathematical description of multidimensional SD systems with delay, based on the concept of the PTM; and optimization methods for multidimensional SD systems with delay, including H2 andL2 optimization as well as H2 optimization for colored input signals. The monograph is completed by three appendices. An algorithm for constructing the set of pathological sampling periods for a continuous SISO object with delay is provided first. MATLAB®-toolbox algorithms representing methods described in the book and application examples for selected optimization problems are given in the second. A solution to the problem of guaranteeing the required performance in a class of stochastic disturbances for SD systems with delay is considered in the third. Computer-Controlled Systems with Delay is intended for engineers, scientists and teachers working in modern control theory. It will also benefit post-graduate students taking courses in related disciplines. The book continues the description of the authors’ research results on developing methods for SD systems theory which are based onthe PTM concept and published in the monographs Computer Controlled Systems and Multivariable Computer-controlled Systems.

This monograph presents our recent results on the proportional-integr- derivative (PID) controller and its design, analysis, and synthesis. The fo cus is on linear time-invariant plants that may contain a time delay in the feedback loop. This setting captures many real-world practical and in dustrial situations. The results given here include and complement those published in Structure and Synthesis of PID Controllers by Datta, Ho, and Bhattacharyya [10]. In [10] we mainly dealt with the delay-free case. The main contribution described here is the efficient computation of the entire set of PID controllers achieving stability and various performance specifications. The performance specifications that can be handled within our machinery are classical ones such as gain and phase margin as well as modern ones such as Hoo norms of closed-loop transfer functions. Finding the entire set is the key enabling step to realistic design with several design criteria. The computation is efficient because it reduces most often to lin ear programming with a sweeping parameter, which is typically the propor tional gain. This is achieved by developing some preliminary results on root counting, which generalize the classical Hermite-Biehler Theorem, and also by exploiting some fundamental results of Pontryagin on quasi-polynomials to extract useful information for controller synthesis. The efficiency is im portant for developing software design packages, which we are sure will be forthcoming in the near future, as well as the development of further capabilities such as adaptive PID design and online implementation.

This book discusses the behaviour of isolated concrete bottle-shaped struts affected by internal expansion reactions (ISR). For that purpose, the numerical modelling of damaged concrete was performed using the Concrete Damaged Plasticity Model (CDPM) implemented in ABAQUS and validated the model through Sankovich's tests. A procedure to automatically obtain the concrete plasticity and damage parameters, essential for CDPM, was developed in Matlab. The inputs were the characteristic compressive strength of the concrete, the equivalent length of the finite element mesh and the ratio between the plastic and inelastic compressive strains. The results showed that the CDPM could represent the load-bearing mechanisms of isolated concrete bottle-shaped struts for a range of several stress levels to which these elements may be subjected in the panels investigated. The numerical simulations for different expansion levels consistently captured the expected damage profile of the panels and theload corresponding to the formation of the first crack, the estimated crack opening, and the ultimate load. For the panels investigated, the reduction observed in the failure load reached values close to 70%, the increase of the tensile plastic deformation was more than 60%, and the maximum crack opening can reach an increase of 113% when compared with those observed experimentally in panels without internal swelling reactions The book also offers a systematic review of the current state of knowledge and it is a valuable resource for scientists, students, practitioners, and lecturers in various scientific and engineering disciplines, namely, civil and materials engineering, as well as and other interested parties.

The Blue Devils in Italy: A History of the 88th Infantry Division in World War II
""The Blue Devils in Italy: A History of the 88th Infantry Division in World War II"" is a comprehensive account of the 88th Infantry Division's role in the Italian Campaign during World War II. Written by John P. Delaney, a veteran of the division, the book details the division's training, deployment, and battles from its arrival in Italy in 1943 to its eventual victory in 1945. The book covers the division's involvement in major battles such as the Battle of Anzio and the Po Valley Campaign, as well as the daily struggles and hardships faced by the soldiers on the front lines. Through firsthand accounts, maps, and photographs, Delaney provides a vivid and detailed portrayal of the division's experiences in Italy. This book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of World War II or the experiences of American soldiers during the Italian Campaign. This is a new release of the original 1947 edition. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
USAF Force Protection? Do We Really Care?

USAF Force Protection? Do We Really Care?

The US Air Force provides the preponderance of the world's most lethal, technologically superior airpower, yet does comparatively little to protect it when its most vulnerable?on the ground. Although the Air Force concept of force projection requires deployment into hostile zones, it traditionally placed little emphasis on protecting its force, unlike its sister services and close NATO partner, the Royal Air Force. Plainly, the Air Force has yet to institutionalize force protection. Service leadership continues to wrestle with integrating force protection with the flying mission, historically reacting to security events vice protecting against them, and therefore repeating the lessons of history. Without a greater understanding of modern force protection roles and missions, Air Force leadership is unwittingly increasing the criminal and combat risk to American airpower. This book helps teachers plan a challenging programme for students, particularly gifted students, within a regular education classroom. It addresses brain-compatible learning, which makes it appropriate for a much wider group of students than just the very brightest. Approaches and strategies are explained in a unique and personal style and include the following: use of inter-disciplinary themes, analytical thinking exercises, teaching moral dilemmas, Socratic questioning techniques, increasing depth and complexity through interactive games, activities to promote creative thinking, using graphic organizers, and teaching research skills and methods. The author demonstrates how all these strategies and approaches work together to help teachers create a more meaningful learning experience for all students. An added benefit of the author's training, as reflected in this book, is to help put the creativity and search for knowledge back into the learning process.
