Renal Glomerular Diseases

Renal Glomerular Diseases

P. Sharpstone; J.A. Trafford

Springer
2012
nidottu
The cause of end-stage renal failure in one-third of patients treated by regular haemodialysis or kidney transplantation is some variety of glomerular disease. Less serious glomerular dis orders are more common and often cause inappropriate conster nation to the patients and, sometimes, to their doctors. Similar clinical features can be produced by pathological lesions ranging from the trivial to the life-threatening, and renal biopsy is often necessary to establish the diagnosis. However, its widespread use during the past 20 years has enabled clinicopathological correlations to be made and the natural history of many 'glomerulopathies' to be established, though large areas of uncer tainty remain. In contrast to symptomatic measures, such as the management of uraemia or the nephrottc syndrome, the use of treatment in arresting the progress of the glomerular lesion itself is controver sial and is based on anecdotal evidence rather than controlled trials. Knowledge of the renal pathology will, at least, enable conditions in which immunosuppressive therapy is appropriate to be distinguished from those which are benign or self-limiting. In this book symptomatic management of the clinical syn dromes is detailed, but classification is firmly based on renal histological appearances. The relevance of immunofluorescent microscopy, ultrathin section examination and electron micros copy to our understanding of pathogenesis is described, as well as the uses of these techniques for morphological discrimination.

"Drawing on a course road tested for over a decade, Sharp has delivered an invaluable aid for teaching students about the complex political, cultural and spatial logics of colonialism and post-colonialism. Difficult theoretical jargon is demystified and the generous use of illustrations and quotes from both academic and popular sources means students can work with manageable measures of primary material. This book has succeeded in delivering a meaningful conversation between political economic accounts of development and cultural accounts of identity. It is a must-have for anyone studying colonialism and post-colonialism." - Jane M Jacobs, Institute of Geography, University of Edinburgh Geographies of Post-Colonialism introduces the principal themes and theories relating to postcolonialism. Written from a geographical perspective, the text includes extended explanations of the cultural and material aspects of the subject. Exploring post-colonialism through the geographies of imagination, knowledge and power, the text is split into three comprehensive sections: Colonialisms discusses Western representations of the 'Other' and the relationship between this and the European self-image.Neo-colonialisms discusses the continuing legacies of colonial ways of knowing through an examination of global culture, tourism and popular culture. Post-colonialisms discusses the core arguments about post-colonialism and culture with a focus on 'hybridity'. Comprehensive and accessible, illustrated with learning features throughout, Geographies of Post-Colonialism will be the key resource for students in human geography and development studies.

Glaciers, so simple in chemical composition, are actually complex, vital entities. Far from being a passive chunk of ice, a glacier is a dynamic system, sensitive to its surroundings and constantly changing to adapt to its environment. An appreciation of the natural beauty of glaciers are created, how they behave, how they affect the environment and how they are eventually destroyed. Few people are untouched by glaciers. A significant part of the world's population inhabits areas formerly covered by glacial ice, which left its marks on the land. Today, glaciers are only found in select parts of the world, but by their influence on global sea level and climatic change, they could have a dramatic effect on modern humanity. Living Ice: Understanding Glaciers and Glaciation aims to increase our knowledge and understanding of glacial activity and products. It is written in a nontechnical and engaging style. The text is peppered with anecdotes and insights from one of the world's experts on glaciers and it is also liberally and thoughtfully illustrated by numerous stunning black and white and colour illustrations. It is suitable for anyone with a passing knowledge of earth science and an interest in the world of living ice.
Evangelical Ethics

Evangelical Ethics

Just as it is impossible to understand the American religious landscape without some familiarity with evangelicalism, one cannot grasp the shape of contemporary Christian ethics without knowing the contributions of evangelical Protestants. This newest addition to the Library of Theological Ethics series begins by examining the core dynamic with which all evangelical ethics grapples: belief in an authoritative, inspired, and unchanging biblical text on the one hand, and engagement with a rapidly evolving and increasingly post-Christian culture on the other. It explores the different roles that scholars and popular figures have played in forming evangelicals' understandings of Christian ethics. And it draws together the contributions of both senior and emerging figures in painting a portrait of this diverse, vibrant, and challenging theological and ethical tradition. This book represents the breadth of evangelical ethical voices, demonstrating that evangelical ethics involves nuance and theological insight that far transcend any political agenda. Contributors include David P. Gushee, Carl F. H. Henry, Jennifer McBride, Stephen Charles Mott, William E. Pannell, John Perkins, Soong-Chan Rah, Gabriel Salguero, Francis Schaeffer, Ron Sider, Helene Slessarev-Jamir, Glen H. Stassen, Eldin Villafane, Allen Verhey, Jim Wallis, Nicholas Wolterstorff, and John Howard Yoder. The Library of Theological Ethics series focuses on what it means to think theologically and ethically. It presents a selection of important, and otherwise unavailable, texts-English-language texts and translations that have fallen out of print, new translations, and collections of significant statements about problems and themes of special importance-in an easily accessible form. This series enables sustained dialogue on new and classic works in the field.
