Suffering as Participation with Christ in the Pauline Corpus

Suffering as Participation with Christ in the Pauline Corpus

The Pauline letters bear witness to the prominent role that suffering played both in the life of Paul and in the lives of the communities to whom he writes. Startlingly, Paul does not express alarm or frustration at suffering’s presence, but instead identifies it as an essential and defining feature for faithful Christ-followers. Paul grounds his account of suffering in the concept of “participation with Christ.” This book explores the connection forged between suffering and participation by engaging in close readings of texts, resourcing letters usually dismissed because of doubts about authenticity, and pulling together an overall characterization of “Paul’s thought” on the basis of common patterns of reference that emerge. Utilizing a tripartite reading strategy of “exegesis,” “canon,” and “theology” offers nuance for and yields fresh insight into a central Pauline motif.

The Theology of the Later Pauline Letters

The Theology of the Later Pauline Letters

Andrew T. Lincoln; A. J. M. Wedderburn

Cambridge University Press
1993
pokkari
This volume investigates the respective theologies of the Letters to the Colossians and the Ephesians, and in so doing provides an accessible introduction to the themes and significance of these New Testament books. A. J. M. Wedderburn examines the background to Colossians, and considers both its readers’ situation and that of its author. He asks whether the proponents of the teaching against which this letter is written were Christians, putting forward their views as the true form of Christianity (as in Galatia), or whether they existed outside the Christian community as a seductive alternative to it. Andrew T. Lincoln examines in turn the authorship of Ephesians, and tries to explain the letter’s strategy of persuasion and the key elements of its teaching about the new identity of the Christian believer. The similarities and differences between the thought of Ephesians and that of Paul are thereby set out clearly. Both sections of the book reflect on the relevance of these letters for today.

Focusing on the reported experiences of managers, the book is richly illustrated throughout with examples drawn from a variety of workplaces, including the civil service, academia, the retail industry, construction and engineering, banking and the prison service. Tony Watson and Pauline Harris together provide a new understanding of the nature of the management role and the ways in which people make sense of their lives as managers. Accessible and innovative, this book will be of interest to students and academics in management and organization studies as well as practising managers.

Living in a multimodal world can be overwhelming. To prepare students to produce and consume the diverse texts made possible through innovative technologies, Schmidt and Kruger-Ross advocate for a slower and more deliberate approach to thinking and planning for teaching literacies. They showcase how technologies can expand, enhance, and inspire the consuming and producing powers of secondary students by examining visual and aural literacies before multimodal literacies. With a combined 40 years of teaching experience and six years of co-teaching literacy with technology, these teacher educators and Notorious Pedagogues podcasters share their vision of technology in the literacy classroom, highly influenced by the pandemic-fueled need to embrace remote teaching. Each chapter begins by connecting its topics to a section theme and contextualizing the topic in a way that makes it easy for readers to understand its connection to the overall purpose of the text.Part of the Principles in Practice imprint, this book is based on NCTE's Beliefs for Integrating Technology into the English Language Arts Classroom position statement. Both reflective and practical, the book also includes: The authors' critical lessons and reflections about secondary teaching; The voices and materials of practicing and preservice teachers, via QR codes;Explanations of how the technological examples represented best exemplify specific literacies; andInformation for preservice and early career teachers, as well as seasoned classroom professionals.
