Perry A. Hall

“This book is unprecedented in the field in its approach and content. . . . A must for the serious student in African American studies.”—Delores P. Aldridge, Emory UniversityThe emergence of African American studies in the 1970s filled a critical gap in higher education. Now a prominent scholar who has helped to define the contours of that field integrates personal reflection with an analysis of its development to recount the political, cultural, and intellectual issues that helped shape the discipline.A participant in the Black Student Movement in its early years, Perry A. Hall provides an insider's look at the struggle to persuade academia to accept the mission of Black Studies and the struggle inside the movement to define its objectives. He examines how the discipline evolved within the context of the wider social revolution changing the face of America, showing how the presence of blacks on campuses brought about the need for new perspectives in college curricula. And because African American Studies today represents a variety of approaches, he examines how they evolved and how they interact both within the field and with other areas of knowledge.Hall critiques the popular "Afrocentric" approach in African American Studies, arguing that it is not synonymous with the discipline overall. He develops an alternative "transformationist" paradigm that builds on the idea of double-consciousness advanced by W. E. B. Du Bois and shows how it can be used to sort out conceptions of black identity that have emerged from sociology and psychology. He explores the importance of vernacular culture—especially popular music—in creating unique frames of reference for African Americans and also applies his paradigm to education and public policy analysis. An important intellectual autobiography, Hall's work shows how insights gleaned over thirty years can be applied in the vineyards of academia today. Its message speaks clearly to scholars of his own generation and today's, and shows how African American Studies can continue to be relevant in the next century. The Author: Perry A. Hall is associate professor of African and Afro-American Studies at the University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill and a former member of the executive board of the National Council for Black Studies. His articles have appeared in Western Journal of Black Studies, Word: A Black Culture Journal, Journal of Negro Education, and the Black Studies Handbook.
Silly Seaside Stories

Silly Seaside Stories

Silly Seaside Stories is a collection of 22 humorous short stories that vary in length. All have some connection with the seacoast (mostly of Maine). The target readership includes those who may be becalmed, fog-bound, relaxing at anchor, and/or looking for some water-related diversion requiring easy reading and escape from the present. Some of the stories are inspired by historical events but dare to provide additional historical (hysterical?) details not mentioned in traditional history texts. Other stories focus on important local events or issues, and the final story highlights some concerns about modern marine electronics. Readers are introduced to some (un)forgettable characters with diverse (perverse?) skills and propensities. Through the medium of the written word, readers will find themselves imaginatively transported across coastal waters by sailboat, lobster-boat, mooring barge, steam-powered launch, kayak, canoe, steamboat, bateau, and hot-air balloon.Attentive readers will also attend town meetings, parades, historical events, rivalry, conflict, earthquake preparation, a memorable gridiron contest, and a misguided guide trip or two. Silly Seaside Stories protagonists will try to rescue the English language, rescue a wayward brat, rescue Benedict Arnold's expedition, rescue football players, rescue...well, some characters really don't deserve to be rescued Most animals in these stories survive just fine without attempts at human rescue.Coastal navigators will be challenged to find their way to Carport, Stonarbor, Mooseport, Bufflehead Bay, and Truly Miniscule Blueberry Island, while avoiding coming to grief on Goode Reef, Redcoat's Revenge, or The Reckoning. Readers of Silly Seaside Stories may expect to be edified by the collective wisdom of characters such as Dewey Kaire, Hilda Toupet (Too-pay), Bug Light, Golley Klimbo, Major Minor, and others as they weave their way through dilemmas, conflicts, challenges, and thwarted plans.Weather plays a role in some stories-fog, calms, contrary breezes, nor'easters, and a blizzard-and some endings are a wee bit explosive. All in all, this eclectic collection of short stories will keep readers intrigued, amused, and (hopefully) awake For those with an appetite for mind relaxation, Silly Seaside Stories provides a delectable combination of fantasy and piracy, with a generous helping of lunacy

Student teaching is the key phase in the preparation of the professional instructional personnel of the nation's schools. Yet, the burgeoning literature of education law lacks a comprehensive and current source specific to student teaching. This volume fills that gap. The first part of this volume consists of a legal primer designed to provide the basic building blocks that serve as the foundation for the aforementioned common core. The second and central part includes an illustrative synthesis of the various state laws specific to student teaching and canvasses the available court decisions specifically concerning student teachers and student teaching. The final part consists of a variety of useful materials in the form of appendices, including charts of relevant statutes and case law; selected case scenarios for the purpose of review and discussion; a glossary of acronyms, abbreviations, and legal terms; and a sampler list of relevant resources.

pokkari
In this intimate memoir, Perry A. Ulander chronicles with powerful clarity the bewildering predicament he confronted and the fellowship and guidance that transformed him during the year he served as an American GI in the jungles of Vietnam. Conveying with unadorned precision the harrowing experiences that shatter his core beliefs, Ulander also captures the camaraderie and humor of his platoon, the hostility between "lifers" and draftees, the physical hardships of reconnaissance missions, and the unrelenting apprehension underlying everyday life. Ultimately, he describes the surrendering of social norms and accepted identities that allows him to glimpse a previously unimagined realm of heightened awareness. Written after a lifetime of reflection on the nature of war and the effect of violence and domination on the minds and spirits of those forced to practice it, "Walking Point" offers a powerful narrative for readers with an interest in the effects of war and violence, American involvement in Vietnam, PTSD, and how trauma can be a catalyst for spiritual transformation. Giving voice to profound insights gained through extreme adversity, Ulander movingly captures the depth of trust and commitment among a group of unwitting warriors who struggle to stay alive and sane in unchartered territory. Contents CHAPTER 1: Into The Unknown CHAPTER 2: The Magic Poncho Liner CHAPTER 3: Initiation CHAPTER 4: Head On CHAPTER 5: The Valley of the Shadow CHAPTER 6: Into the Light CHAPTER 7: Short Time CHAPTER 8: No Time CHAPTER 9: Home"
The Old People

The Old People

Since the beginnings of darkest silence the people of a mythical island have spent their days tying the ancient knot that binds them to their ancestors. To tie this knot they must dig a hole; to dig a hole they first must have fire; and to make a fire that is hot enough for hole digging, this knot that they have been tying for countless generations must finally be tied. From silence to mud to rope to knot to wood to words to fire, the Old People will work to tie this knot under the cool shade of the island's original knotmaking tree. Subversive in voice and style, without mainstays of conventional fiction, 'The Old People' portrays the sights and sounds of a world that has been lost. Using primary words as a metaphor for the island's seemingly limited yet infinitely diverse and self-sustaining resources, the book conveys the life rhythms of the Old People and their world: the unique cadence that emerges from the ancient juxtaposition of silence, then language, then silence once again. This allegorical work tells the story of a knot that is made and, by elision, encourages reflection about the trajectory of our own society. In a world of relentless and unnecessary change, the story reminds us to pay homage to our past and to cherish 'the things that stay forever' above 'the things that merely come and go'.

In 1864, George D. Prentice, editor of the pro-Union Louisville Daily Journal, created the persona of Sue Mundy, a Civil War guerrilla who was in actuality a young man named Marcellus Jerome Clarke. This volume offers an in-depth, historically accurate account of Clarke's exploits in Kentucky during the Civil War. The work begins with a summary of Kentucky's prewar position: primarily pro-Union yet decidedly anti-Lincoln. The author then discusses the ways in which this paradox gave rise to the guerrilla threat that terrorized Kentuckians during the final years of the war. Special emphasis is placed on previously unknown facts, names and deeds with dialogue taken directly from testimony in court-martial proceedings. While the main focus of the work is Clarke himself, other perpetrators of guerrilla warfare including William Clarke Quantrill, Sam Berry and Henry Magruder are also covered, as are guerrilla hunters Edwin Terrell and James Bridgewater. Previously unpublished photographs accompany this fascinating Civil War history.

As infants age, they develop a preference for black, white and eventually red colour schemes. Exposure to such patterns is an important part of early infant brain growth and encourages cognitive development. Likewise, rhyme and repetitive sounds are felt to stimulate the speech and language areas in a child's developing brain. Perry at a Parrot Party combines these starkly contrasting black and white patterns and a repetitive, rhyming story to stimulate the growing brains of infants and young children. This works to improve concentration and enhance cognitive development, supporting your baby's learning and encouraging focus from day one, all the while engaging your baby in a fun and enjoyable way.
