American–Soviet Relations

American–Soviet Relations

American-Soviet Relations (1993) is a study of American policy towards the Soviet Union from 1917 to the fall of Communism. It attempts to understand what precisely were the roots of the Cold War and an analysis of the later relationship in the light of the Soviet Union’s evolution since the Revolution. It argues that American policy was shaped not only by the external threat from the USSR but also by internal forces within American society, domestic politics, economic interests, emotional and psychological attitudes and images of the Soviet Union.
Restructuring Schools, Reconstructing Teachers

Restructuring Schools, Reconstructing Teachers

Peter Woods; Bob Jeffrey; Geoff Troman; Mari Boyle

Routledge

sidottu
Drawing on wide ranging research this book, originally published in 1997, explores how the policy changes of previous years were affecting primary teachers and their work at the time. Within the context of worldwide restructuring, the thoughts, feelings and activities of teachers in their daily work are examined. The core argument is that what used to be a complex but fulfilling job distinguished by professional dilemmas, which are amenable to professional skill, had become increasingly marked by tension and constraint, which frustrates teacher creativity. While some teachers found new opportunities in the ‘new’ primary school, many used strategical and micro-political activity in order to cope, while others fell victim to stress and burnout. The authors argue that teachers’ own active involvement in policy change is required if their creative potential is to be realized. The book will still be of interest to teachers in primary schools, researchers and policy makers.

Bayle's Dictionary: Historical and Critical
Bayle's Dictionary is one of the best known and most influential works of the eighteenth century. Banned in Catholic France on first publication in 1697 it became a bestseller and ran into several editions and translations. Its merciless scientific and philosophical enquiring challenged all assumptions and blind reverence for authority, setting new standards for all future encyclopedists. This second English edition is enlarged from the fourth French edition, which in turn had been much enlarged from Bayle's manuscripts. Edited and with a life of Bayle by the highly esteemed Pierre Desmaizeaux, this edition represents the most comprehensive English edition available.
Jesus und der Täufer

Jesus und der Täufer

Peter Böhlemann

This German language title presents a new interpretation of Luke's theology and ethics. The author demonstrates how Luke develops his theological agenda by contrasting the teaching of Jesus with that of John the Baptist. Böhlemann shows that the confrontation with the followers of John the Baptist runs through the whole of Luke's Gospel and through The Acts of the Apostles. By taking up and modifying the themes of John's preaching, Luke develops his own theology of liberation which distinguishes him from John's followers and with which he seeks to win them for the Gospel of Jesus Christ. John and his followers preached with threats of judgement while Jesus is depicted as a forgiving pastoral leader - the good shepherd. This new interpretation of the Lukan works reveals a narrative theology of great systematic consistency.

French Pulpit Oratory, 1598–1650

This 1980 text was the first full-length study of seventeenth-century pulpit oratory since 1863, and the first to treat both Catholic and Protestant preaching. The first part opens with a general discussion on the sermon as a literary form, followed by a survey of ideas on preaching and the practical 'arts of preaching' circulating in late Renaissance Europe. Of the central chapters on the sermons themselves, two are concerned with the style and complex formal structures of the sermons; while two examine in turn the major themes of illusion and nature and the imagery associated with them. The second part is a descriptive catalogue of extant sermons and some funeral orations of the period, which provided a great deal of information never previously collected. The book made a significant contribution both to the study of a neglected period of French literature, the 'Baroque', and to comparative studies of the sermon.

For ten years, physician Peter Boelens and his wife Eleanor have been practicing a new treatment for depression and anxiety--healing prayer that invites Christ into clients' painful memories. Clients still remember past hurtful events, but their pain is gone. Released to Soar describes the Boelens' healing prayer process, documents its effectiveness, and demonstrates its practice--for readers' personal use or to help others. Over their lifetime, Dr. Peter and Eleanor Boelens have founded and worked in Christian medical ministries: a community health, church-planting program in postwar South Korea; Cary Christian Health Center in the delta of Mississippi; indigenous, worldwide community health ministries through the Luke Society; and Shalom Prayer, a psycho-spiritual healing prayer ministry. Released to Soar is their third book. The stories of their other ministries are told in Delta Doctor and Where Next, Lord? The Boelens divide their time between Mississippi and Michigan. Maureen Rank, author or coauthor of fourteen books, has assisted the Boelens with all three books about their ministries.

First published in 1971, Edmund Spenser presents a comprehensive overview of Spencer's work, including the minor poems and the prose View of Ireland. There are chapters on the Shepheardes Calendar, the Complaints poems, the great love and religious poetry of 1595-6 and The Faerie Queene. The author illustrates the range of Spencer's imaginative and poetic skills in pastoral, elegy, lyric, satire, sonnet, ode, epithalamium, religious ode and epic, and shows why he was the most popular of Elizabethan poets. This is a must read for scholars of English literature in English poetry.
