This book tracks a particular understanding of self, philosophically, from research evidence and in its implications for psychotherapy. At each step, the author includes first the theory he is working from, then the clinical implications of the theory, followed by some links to the philosophical outlook inherent in the theory, and finally a more extended case example. It takes the view that the continuing self is partly an illusion, partly a construct, and that we in fact have to work to stay the same in the face of all the different possibilities the world offers us. The author believes that we do this for two reasons. First of all, continuity allows deeper contact: friendships, loving relationships with partners and families. Secondly, and balancing this, the predictable is less anxiety-producing, and that we avoid this existential anxiety by acting in a stereotyped way and avoiding some of the depths of contact.

Peter Lombard

Philipp W. Rosemann

Peter Lombard is best known as the author of a celebrated work entitled Book of Sentences, which for several centuries served as the standard theological textbook in the Christian West. It was the subject of more commentaries than any other work of Christian literature besides the Bible itself. The Book of Sentences is essentially a compilation of older sources, from the Scriptures and Augustine down to several of the Lombard's contemporaries, such as Hugh of Saint Victor and Peter Abelard. Its importance lies in the Lombard's organisation of the theological material, his method of presentation, and the way in which he shaped doctrine in several major areas. Despite his importance, however, there is no accessible introduction to Peter Lombard's life and thought available in any modern language. This volume fills this considerable gap. Philipp W. Rosemann begins by demonstrating how the Book of Sentences grew out of a long tradition of Christian reflection-a tradition, ultimately rooted in Scripture, which by the twelfth century had become ready to transform itself into a theological system. Turning to the Sentences , Rosemann then offers a brief exposition of the Lombard's life and work. He proceeds to a book-by-book examination and interpretation of its main topics, including the nature and attributes of God, the Trinity, creation, angelology, human nature and the Fall, original sin, Christology, ethics, and the sacraments. He concludes by exploring how the Sentences helped shape the further development of the Christian tradition, from the twelfth century through the time of Martin Luther.

Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins and Genesis. The representation of poverty and the troubles in Africa in their music
Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 2,3, University of Bonn (Institut f r Anglistik, Amerikanistik und Keltologie), course: Poverty, language: English, abstract: This analysis looks at how Genesis and their singers portray poverty and Africa in their songs. Is the portrayal appropriate or is it full of clich s and prejudices? And did these songs do anything to help the poor or were they merely there for commercial success and artistic pleasure? For that, I will give a short biography of the band, and then I will select some songs and see how the band Genesis has dealt with the topic of poverty in their music. The representation of poverty or of poverty in Africa has always been a big topic in popular music, especially combined with the idea of fighting poverty or helping the poor people in Africa. One of the most famous examples is probably the Live Aid concert in 1985. It was the continuation of the Band Aid single "Do They Know It's Christmas?" from 1984, in which musician Bob Geldof had gathered many famous pop stars to raise money for the poor starving population in Ethiopia. The concept worked and half a year later, the Live Aid performances were celebrated with the same intention. There were two parallel concerts, one in London, one in Philadelphia, and the whole 80s pop world seemed to participate in the event. One man stuck out: Genesis lead vocalist Phil Collins, who was at that time becoming increasingly famous with his solo career, was the only one who played on both concerts. This was made possible when he crossed the Atlantic with a Concorde. He made it into the Guinness Book, and helped Live Aid to become an even more memorable event. Collins has done charity work throughout his whole career, and he wrote some outstanding songs that deal with the critical topic of homelessness or the apartheid. These include songs from his solo career as well as from his time
Peter Von Oertzen 1924-2008: A Political and Intellectual Biography
This exhaustive study traces Peter von Oertzen's transformation from a Berlin upbringing marked by Prussian traditions, conservative revolution, and National Socialism to his role as a Marxist and left-wing Social Democrat. It explores his dual impact as a political scientist and activist, detailing his influence in informal networks, journal projects, and trade union education initiatives. Navigating the SPD's delicate internal dynamics, Oertzen faced governmental responsibilities and conservative opposition while engaging in dialogue with various Marxist, council-socialist, and alternative left currents. Awarded the Niedersachsen State History Prize in 2018, this work offers unique insights into twentieth-century left Social Democracy.

Philippians

A case-study in modelling the social make-up of an early Christian community, including estimated figures for the various social groups in the model. A case-study in how such modelling can make an impact on the exegesis of a text. The result is a proposal for reading Philippians as a call for unity under economic suffering. In particular, the story of Christ in Philippians 2.6–11 is read as a reinforcement of this call in the specifically Roman context of Philippi. The book begins with a discussion of archaeological and literary evidence about the development of the Roman colony of Philippi. It also includes discussion of the likely effects of suffering among various social groups in the church, exploration of Paul's and Christ's roles as models for the Philippians, and comparison of Paul's language about Christ with Imperial ideology.
