Pierre Laroque and the Welfare State in Postwar France
Eric Jabbari examines Pierre Laroque's contribution to the rise of the French welfare state, namely his role as the architect of the social security plan which was adopted by the provisional government in 1945. The conception of the Laroque Plan was a product of his work as a civil servant and social policy expert, and it reflected the diverse combination of influences: his background in administrative law and his onetime support for the corporatist management of industrial relations. These experiences were all the more notable since they were marked by his belief in the necessity of an increased state interventionism which was mitigated by administrative decentralisation. The purpose of social policy, in his mind, was to cultivate social solidarity, a task which could best be achieved if the beneficiaries of this policy could be encouraged to participate in its implementation. These concerns remained central to his conception of the state and society long after he lost his enthusiasm for corporatism, and contributed to the shape of post-war social security.

An artist of pivotal importance to the generation of post-Impressionists from Seurat and Gauguin to Matisse and Picasso, Pierre Puvis de Chavannes (1824 - 1898) played a crucial role in the history of late-19th-century French art and the development of modernism. He was an artist of great range, originality, and idiosyncratic invention who executed mural complexes, compelling easel paintings, and numerous works on paper. These two companion volumes—a critical study of the artist's life and art, and a catalogue raisonné of his paintings—introduce many of Puvis’s works for the first time, assess his contribution, and restore him to the pantheon of modern masters. Volume I situates Puvis and his work in his time. With a wealth of new documentation, it addresses the theories, forces, and events that impinged on his art. Volume II is a complete compendium of Puvis's easel paintings and mural cycles for civic buildings throughout France as well as for the Boston Public Library.

This book celebrates 40 years of work by Pierre Droulers (b. 1951), a pioneer of contemporary dance and choreographer of more than 30 works. A key figure in France and Belgium since the 1970s, Droulers was one of the first students to graduate from the Mundra School. In tune with the zeitgeist since the beginning of his career, Droulers has collaborated with singular and forward-thinking musicians, from jazz saxophonist Steve Lacy and beat poet Brion Gysin to Isreali group Minimal Compact and performance artist Winston Tong. In later years Droulers has developed fruitful artistic exchanges with visual artists, particularly Michel François and Ann Veronica Janssens. Drawing on archives for images and text, along with personal recollections and quotations, this monograph presents a three-dimensional narrative: the collisions of faces, landscapes, and words revealing Droulers’s artistic world as one of obsessions and fantasies, of light and darkness. An unparalleled reassessment of Pierre Bonnard, exploring his paintings, drawings, photography, and prints As one of the founders of the post-Impressionist group the Nabis, French artist Pierre Bonnard (1867–1947) is frequently seen as a transitional figure between the Impressionists and modernists. This beautifully illustrated book offers a fresh interpretation, revealing the artist’s central concern with expanding representation beyond the limits of natural vision. The result is a new understanding not only of Bonnard but of modernism itself. Exploring how Bonnard’s dazzling domestic scenes and landscapes reimagine perception, embodiment, and the passage of time, Lucy Whelan characterizes him as a painter of unusual insight in his consideration of the relationship between vision and representation. The book covers Bonnard’s paintings, drawings, photographs, and prints, with special focus on his later works from the 1920s to his death in 1947, and draws on an in-depth study of the artist’s diaries, interviews, and other written sources. A groundbreaking reassessment, Pierre Bonnard Beyond Vision presents an artist engaged in avant-garde forms of experimentation who complicated vision in innovative ways.

Pierre Culot (1938-2011) was a Belgian ceramist and sculptor who was trained by Antoine de Vinck and English master potter Bernard Leach. He is one of the ceramists of the 1950s who transformed their craft into an art form. In his work, Pierre Culot passionately expresses his desire to be in the world, to be on earth and to be in nature the sole generator of life and beauty. The clay that he molds into slabs, scratches and enamels becomes containers for daily use with majestic presence. Over his career Culot aimed at mastery of his practice, shaping his pieces in terms of size and in surface effect, by combining the raw earth in each item with luxuriant enamels that had unique variations. All of Culot’s life he remained faithful to his initial experience as a potter, evolving his ceramic works from basic forms (bowls, plates, jugs) to more daring shapes (cruciform vases, gourds, compound pots, inkwells), and even into the landscape space by sculpting garden walls. This book offers a complete overview of his unique and multi-faceted career in pottery, sculpture and landscaping. Distributed for Mercatorfonds

Now back in print, a revealing look at the visionary French furniture designer and architect, highlighting his virtuoso designs and versatile creativity “Pierre Chareau: Modern Architecture and Design adds even more depth and breadth to the architect’s deserved reputation for creative virtuosity.”—Julie V. Iovine, Wall Street Journal “[A]n exceptionally informative, readable catalog.”—Roberta Smith, New York Times The designer and architect Pierre Chareau (1883–1950) was a pivotal figure in modernism. His extraordinary Art Deco furniture is avidly collected and his visionary glass house, the Maison de Verre, is celebrated, but the breadth of his design genius has been little explored. Chareau linked architecture, fine arts, and style; designed furniture for avant-garde films and chic homes; collected artists such as Picasso and Mondrian; and was a radical innovator in the use of materials. This revealing look at the visionary French designer highlights his virtuosity and versatile creativity. Essays by leading scholars embrace the full scope of his invention, offering detailed analyses of individual projects, the interdisciplinary nature of his work, his Jewish background, his place in the avant-garde of Paris between the wars, and his more recent reception. Extensive illustrations present a rich sampling of Chareau’s furniture, architecture, interiors, fabrics, and wallpapers, as well as his own important art collection. Pierre Bourdieu in Studies of Organization and Management
There is increasing academic interest in how Pierre Bourdieu’s sociology can be applied to management and organization studies (MOS). In a context of increasing complexity faced by organizations and those who work in them due to globalization, neoliberalism, austerity, financial crisis, ecological issues, populism and developing technologies, there is untapped potential to use Bourdieu’s theoretical inventions to arrive at greater understandings of how change, transition and crisis shape work, organizational life as well as relations between different organizational and sectorial fields. This book aims to take a specific focus on the relational nature of Bourdieu’s work and its relevance for contemporary organizations. It provides empirically-grounded examples that showcase the explanatory strength of Bourdieu´s intellectual concepts, such as field, habitus, capital, hexis, hysteresis, symbolic power, symbolic violence, doxa, illusio as applied to the current challenges within MOS. Such challenges include issues resulting from globalization, neoliberalism, financial crisis, ecological crisis, populism and developing technologies, to name but a few; and added to those, a global pandemic. The twelve chapters presented in this book study a great variety and range of organizational phenomena that are organized into three thematic sections: ‘Neoliberalism, fields and hysteresis’, ‘Global and national movements as sites for competition and symbolic domination’ and the ‘The emergence and transformation of professional fields’. The chapters show a concern with the challenges and opportunities such developments offer to MOS scholars and to managers and employees in public and private sector organizations. It will be of interest to researchers, academics and students in the fields of organizational studies, critical management studies, human resource management and sociology.

Pierre-Simon Laplace (1749-1827) is remembered amoung probabilitists today particularly for his "Theorie analytique des probabilites", published in 1812. The "Essai philosophique dur les probabilites" is his introduction for the second edition of this work. Here Laplace provided a popular exposition on his "Theorie". The "Essai", based on a lecture on probability given by Laplace in 1794, underwent sweeping changes, almost doubling in size, in the various editions published during Laplace's lifetime. Translations of various editions in different languages have apeared over the years. The only English translation of 1902 reads awkwardly today. This is a thorough and modern translation based on the recent re-issue, with its voluminous notes, of the fifth edition of 1826, with preface by Rene Thom and postscript by Bernard Bru. In the second part of the book, the reader is provided with an extensive commentary by the translator including valuable histographical and mathematical remarks and various proofs.

This short critical introduction to Pierre Bourdieu's thought is a model of clarity and insight. Where Bourdieu's own writings are often complex, even ambiguous, Richard Jenkins is direct, concise and to the point. He emphasizes Bourdieu's contributions to theory and methodology while also dealing in detail with his substantive studies of education, social stratification and culture. His book provides the best short English-language introduction to Bourdieu's work.'As Jenkins points out in the final pages of his book, criticism can be the sincerest form of flattery. I particularly relished his critical approach to the work of Bourdieu and believe that he has written a timely introduction which both undergraduates and experienced teachers will find stimulating and enjoyable.'- Mike Hepworth, University of Aberdeen
Pierre Bayle's Cartesian Metaphysics
In his magnum opus, the Historical and Critical Dictionary, Pierre Bayle offered a series of brilliant criticisms of the major philosophical and theological systems of the 17th Century. Although officially skeptical concerning the attempt to provide a definitive account of the truths of metaphysics, there is reason to see Bayle as a reluctant skeptic. In particular, Todd Ryan contends that Bayle harbored deep sympathy for the attempt by Descartes and his most innovative successor, Nicolas Malebranche, to establish a metaphysical system that would provide a foundation for the new mechanistic natural philosophy while helping to secure the fundamental tenets of rational theology. Through a careful analysis of Bayle’s critical engagement with such philosophers as Spinoza, Leibniz, Locke and Newton, it is argued that, despite his reputation as a skeptic, Bayle was not without philosophical commitments of his own. Drawing on the full range of Bayle’s writings, from his early philosophical lectures to his final controversial writings, Ryan offers detailed studies of Bayle’s treatment of such pivotal issues as mind-body dualism, causation and God’s relation to the world.
