In the mid-1700s, the tip of present-day Pittsburgh's Golden Triangle at the Forks of the Ohio was a valuable piece of land to both the British and French colonial powers vying for control of North America. This guidebook traces the story of the construction of Fort Duquesne by the French, the failed attempt of Gen. Edward Braddock and his British forces to capture the fort in 1754, its eventual capture in 1758 by British general John Forbes's troops, its transformation into Fort Pitt, and the siege on the fort by Indian forces during Pontiac's War in 1763.

Between 1929 and 1937, Hall of Fame coach Jock Sutherland took the championship program at the University of Pittsburgh that was built by his mentor Glenn "Pop" Warner, and won five of the nine national championships the school now claims. While a successful period, it was also controversial: Sutherland enjoyed the support of a group of wealthy boosters named the Golden Panthers, who helped him secure the services of the best players western Pennsylvania had to offer. While they made sure the players had what they needed, the school also made sure they had enough money to be comfortable. Critics accused Pitt of employing what amounted to professional athletes in a college sport. These accusations not only embarrassed the school administration, but led to the end of their dynasty and its coach. This book tells the exciting tale of their championship run, and describes how their downfall began what has since been a continual academics versus athletics tug-of-war at the school.
1976 National Champion Pitt Panthers
Ten years after a one-loss season and being ranked third in the nation, the University of Pittsburgh's historic football team had fallen on hard times. In 1973, the team hired former All-American Johnny Majors to right the ship, and he promptly recruited Tony Dorsett and Al Romano. Over the next four years, the new-look Panthers were brought back to prominence with stunning victories, culminating in the 1976 NCAA National Championship. Dorsett, a future Pro Football Hall of Famer, became the first college running back to eclipse two thousand yards in a season and was awarded the Heisman Trophy in the championship year. Author David Finoli tells the story of one of the most dramatic turnarounds in college football history.

Based on true events, this is the untold story of the foreign currency bank loans scandal that rocked Australia in the 1980s, devastating over 4,500 families. In a world where powerful politicians and privileged bankers called the shots, greed reigned, leaving small business owners and farmers to pay the price. The narrative follows Tom Mortimer, whose journey begins on a dairy farm in rural Georgica in 1959 and takes him to the high-stakes world of Sydney's Pitt Street bankers. The story reaches its climax in 1987 with a dramatic David vs. Goliath courtroom showdown as Tom takes on the system that betrayed him.

A flamboyant polymath, General Augustus Henry Lane Fox Pitt Rivers (1827–1900) was influential in four fields during his lifetime: military training, anthropology, archaeology and public education. Yet very little is known about his career, character, or motivation. Mark Bowden has written an entertaining and thoroughly researched biography of the General, which describes his stormy relationships with his wife, children, colleagues, tenants and dependants; his military career; his activities in public education; and his contributions to anthropology and archaeology. In particular he assesses his impact as excavator, field archaeologist, theoretician and first Inspector of Ancient Monuments on the development of British archaeology. This is the most complete biography of a controversial man whose methods and ideals have been much quoted but frequently misunderstood and misrepresented.

This book offers a readable yet scholarly account of the life of one of the greatest statesmen of empire, William Pitt the Elder, First Earl of Chatham (1708-78). Chatham is seen as a political outsider who rose to direct British policy in the Seven Years War, the crucial struggle that gave Canada to Britain. A critic of domestic corruption, he was subsequently a champion of American liberties. Chatham's achievement was all the more remarkable for a politician who was dogged for much of his life by poor physical health and considerable mental stress. His position as an outsider was crucial: it helped make his reputation, and to make him an unsettling figure. It also caused problems when he gained office, but it ensured Chatham was and seemed, 'different'. He was a man with whom the national interest could be associated, not simply because he made the claim himself, but also because he seemed apart from the world of court and connection.
