The definitive reference for driven piles. Nearly six years in the making, Pile Driving by Pile Buck is a comprehensive reference book on the history of pile driving and driven piles, the various types of piles, the equipment used to install them, the design of driven pile foundations, the installation of driven piles and the capacity verification of driven piles. Not just another theoretical exercise, Pile Driving by Pile Buck gives practical procedures and equipment configurations for the successful installation of virtually any driven pile foundations. Included with the text are a wealth of photographs without equal in this type of publication; the photos alone are worth the price of the book, and help bring the reader "on site" to understand the whole process of pile driving--one of the oldest construction techniques known.

Poole Pottery is a great British institution, and for more than 130 years has been in the very first rank of producers of tiles, mosaic flooring and advertising panels – as well as the pottery that remains its most famous and collectible product. Founded by Jesse Carter in 1873 as 'Carter's Industrial Tile Factory', the company went on to flourish in the hands of Carter's son and, in 1921, joined forces with Henry Stabler and John Adams to add art deco pottery to its list of products. 'Carter Stabler Adams', which would come to be known simply as Poole Pottery, was responsible for two of the most distinctive lines in the industry's history: the Delphis and Aegean designs. In this extensively illustrated book, Will Farmer gives a lovingly detailed account of a unique and distinctively British company.
Pile Design and Construction Rules of Thumb

All objects and structures transfer their load either directly or indirectly to the earth. The capacity of the earth to support such loads depends on the strength and stability of the supporting soil or rock materials. Pile foundations are the part of a structure used to carry and transfer the load of the structure to the bearing ground located at some depth below ground surface. There are many texts on pile foundations. Generally, these books are complicated and difficult to understand. Easy to use and understand, this book covers virtually every subject concerning pile design, featuring techniques that do not appear in other books on the subject. The book contains design methods with real life examples on pin piles, bater piles, concrete piles, steel piles, timber piles, auger cast piles, underpinning design, seismic pile design, negative skin friction and design of Bitumen coated piles for negative skin friction and many other subjects. The book is packed with design examples, case studies and after construction scenarios are presented for the reader's benefits. This book enables the reader to come away with a complete and comprehensive understanding of the issues related to the design, installation and construction of piles.
Poole Park

Poole Park

Constructed on 90 acres of land donated by Lord Wimborne for the express purpose of building a People's Park, Poole Park has catered for the town's residents through the decades with a variety of features, including a freshwater lake and duck pond, timbered tea house, cricket pavilion, bandstand, bowling greens, tennis courts and even a zoo (which closed in 1994), as well as 30 acres of grassland, shrubs, flowerbeds and trees. Motor speed trials were held within the park during the 1930s, however this ceased when a German Luftwaffe plane bombed the lake's rustic bridge during the Second World War (fortunately no one was killed and a replacement bridge now carries a miniature diesel railway over the lake), while the tennis courts were turned into allotments to aid the government's Dig for Victory campaign. An important feature of the book is a walking tour, which reveals the history of the park through its existing notable features.

Pole/Jew brings together a group of scholars-about half of them Jewish, about half of them ethnic Poles-from the United States, Poland, the United Kingdom, and Canada and enlists their diverse methodological and generational perspectives to push debates over Polish-Jewish relations beyond entrenched and reductive positions. At the core of the volume are the following questions: –What impact has the Holocaust had on Polish history and Polish literature? –How has the Holocaust affected Polish-Jewish-and Polish-identity? –What future is there for relations between Poland’s small Jewish minority and the country’s overwhelming ethnic Polish majority? Between Poland and Israel? Between Jews of the diaspora and ethnic Poles abroad? –Which research areas have yet to be addressed or revisited and reexamined? –Are there ways to move beyond the reductive notion of 1989 (i.e., the fall of the communist regime in Poland) as wall and fulcrum? By addressing these compelling questions, this volume offers fresh perspectives and encourages a nuanced understanding of Polish-Jewish relations. Contributors: M. B. B. Pole Raising and Speech Making

Pole Raising and Speech Making

Jennifer Eastman Attebery

In "Pole Raising and Speech Making," author Jennifer Eastman Attebery focuses on the beginnings of the traditional Scandinavian Midsummer celebration and the surrounding spring-to-summer seasonal festivities in the Rocky Mountain West during the height of Swedish immigration to the area 1880 1917.Combining research in folkloristics and history, Attebery explores various ways that immigrants blended traditional Swedish Midsummer-related celebrations with local civic celebrations of American Independence Day on July 4 and the Mormons Pioneer Day on July 24. Functioning as multimodal observances with multiple meanings, these holidays represent and reconsider ethnicity and panethnicity, sacred and secular relationships, and the rural and the urban, demonstrating how flexible and complex traditional celebrations can be.Providing a wealth of detail and information surrounding little-studied celebrations and valuable archival and published primary sources diaries, letters, speeches, newspaper reports, and images "Pole Raising and Speech Making" is proof that non-English immigrant culture must be included when discussing American culture. It will be of interest to scholars and graduate students in ethnic studies, folklore, ritual and festival studies, and Scandinavian American cultural history."
