It was springtime 1991 when Rose found an abandoned baby in the woods. Neighbors named her Poppy. But in the twenty years that had passed she did not give Rose her respect for raising her. Again and again Poppy was attacking and hurting Rose, her benefacor. Why is she resenting Rose? Is it a revenge? is there any secret...?
The poppy is the classic cornfield plant. Throughout history it has been one of the most successful of all agricultural weeds. Its brilliant colour has made it one of our best-known plants – it is beloved of artists and poets, though often hated by farmers. But its origins are obscure; it seems entirely confined to agricultural and marginal land, wherever it is found. Where was it before the inception of agriculture? And how is it that it is almost unique in its colour among the flowers of northern Europe? In Poppy Andrew Lack explores all aspects of one of our most familiar but declining flowers, combining history and biology with symbolic associations and connections with the arts. He describes why the poppy is so intimately associated with war and remembrance, and tells remarkable stories about the different varieties: the opium poppy, one of the oldest of narcotics, has had a profound influence on human history; the phrase ‘tall poppy syndrome’ is now used to describe envy of the success of a peer; and in many countries the poppy has come to symbolize weddings or death.Beautifully illustrated throughout, Poppy will appeal to the many admirers of this most colourful and striking plant.

In Poppy, Joseph Minden explores how the totems of remembering are always, also, sites of suppression. The poems in this debut collection take in a research trip to the battlefields of Flanders and the Somme, an ill-fated visit to Penang, rumours of the Opium Wars, fragments of family myth and a fear of familiar vampires – all grimy with the trash of establishment British history. In these pages, Adlestrop meets 'Robin Hood / bewitched by a leg of tandoori chicken' and drunk Brits stumble around the Menin Gate with 'Lest We Forget' stitched into their polo shirts. Sometimes accompanied by the historian, Jason, and perpetually haunted by an old flame, Mina, the protagonist of the poems tries to separate memory from nostalgia and empire from heritage. Longing is enmeshed in old ideas and historical material from which it must be torn away. Minden makes disturbing rhythms out of the detritus he finds around him, using documentary evidence, personal testimony, dream narrative, prose, rhyme and the soft hammer blows of repetition to craft a haunted, memorable music.
Falsely imprisoned as a child in Victorian England, Poppy is finally released as a young woman. But despite this cruel adversity, her loving spirit remains undaunted and she eagerly begins to reconstruct her life. However, burdened with the dark secret of her imprisonment, she eventually shares it with Scotland Yard's finest: Inspector Peter Palgrave, and together they solve the involvement she was dragged into by a dark and sinister scheme hatched by her mother and a few wealthy aristocrats. Through it all Poppy finds love with the Inspector and moves onward and upward into London society gaining the respect of all those who know her.

POPPY er to år gammel.
