Dopo il disastro subito dagli inglesi nel mare di Barents nel luglio del 1942, le marine alleate e le unit sommergibilistiche tedesche sempre coadiuvate dagli aerei della Luftwaffe, continuarono a scontrarsi nei mari artici. In questa epica lotta s'inquadra la vicenda del convoglio alleato PQ.18 composto da una flotta consistente, e il successivo convoglio il QP.14 che incapp in un branco di lupi al largo dell'isola degli orsi perdendo 4 mercantili e un cacciatorpediniere. Gli Alleati con questi convogli cercarono di portare aiuto e materiale all'URSS che stava combattendo assieme a loro le forze del Terzo Reich. I convogli artici, organizzati dal 1941 al 1945, erano destinati al porto di Arkhangelsk, in estate, e a Murmansk, in inverno, attraverso l'Islanda e l'Oceano Artico, compiendo viaggi pericolosissimi in acque tra le pi ostili al mondo. La grande battaglia avvenne a met settembre 1942 e questa volta lo scontro fu assai pi arduo per le forze tedesche, che riuscirono ad affondare 13 mercantili ma subirono la perdita di ben tre U-boot oltre ad altri 4 danneggiati e 20 aerei da combattimento. Si era insomma interrotta la tragica mattanza per gli alleati. Qualcuno fra gli inglesi rivendic addirittura la vittoria, anche se forse pi corretto parlare di uno scontro chiuso senza vincitori, ma per le forze dell'asse si apriva comunque un momento critico...

This volume contains several surveys of important developments in quantum probability. The new type of quantum central limit theorems, based on the notion of free independence rather than the usual Boson or Fermion independence is discussed. A surprising result is that the role of the Gaussian for this new type of independence is played by the Wigner distribution. This motivated the introduction of new type of quantum independent increments noise, the free noise and the corresponding stochastic calculus. A further generalization, the ?-noises, is discussed. The free stochastic calculus is shown to be able to fit naturally into the general representation free calculus. The basic free are shown to be realized as non-adapted stochastic integrals with respect to the usual Boson white noises. Quantum noise on the finite difference algebra is expressed in terms of the usual Boson white noises. A new quantum way of looking at classical stochastic flows, in particular diffusions on Riemannian Manifolds is explained. Quantum groups are discussed from the point of view of possible applications to quantum probability. The applications of quantum probability to physics are surveyed.

A wide-ranging study that examines everything from the blockbuster movie franchise Les Boys to the sovereigntist hip hop group Loco Locass, Hockey, PQ explores how Canada’s national sport has been used to signify a specific Québécois identity. Amy J. Ransom analyzes how Québécois writers, filmmakers, and musicians have appropriated symbols like the Montreal Forum, Maurice Richard, or the 1972 Summit Series to construct or critique images of the Québécois male. Close analyses of hockey-themed narratives consider the soap opera Lance et compte (‘He shoots, he scores’), the music of former pro player Bob Bisonnette, folk band Mes Aïeux, rock group Les Dales Hawerchuk, and the fiction of François Barcelo. Through these examinations of the role hockey plays in contemporary francophone popular culture, Ransom shows how Quebec’s popular culture uses hockey to distinguish French-Canadians from the French and to rally them against their English-speaking counterparts. In the end, however, this study illuminates how the sport of hockey unites the two solitudes.
