A mystified archeologist, an Amish ghost, and avenging angels are just a few of the stories found in Beyond the Door, Volume 1, a twelve-story supernatural anthology. When multi-published authors get together for a play date, and are presented with a writing challenge they can't resist, the results are not only surprising, they sometimes stretch the limits of their storytelling abilities. In the pages of Beyond the Door, the demons at play will not be what you expect.Where else can you find a robotic barista, a vengeful little girl, and a murderous goddess who wants to come out and play? What else may be lurking Beyond the Door?Interview with the WritersQ: What possessed four otherwise normal writers to write such dark and horrifying stories?A.B. Alvarez: It was the only way I could get them to unlock the basement door so I could get something to eat. Seriously.Serena B. Miller: Wait a minute. You got out? Jesse R. Lyle: The real answer is, A.B. didn't see the sign that said "Push To Open." Poor guy would have starved to death pulling on that door if we hadn't opened it for him... we had to come up with some sort of story to help save his dignity.Derek E. Miller: I was the last to say "Not It" when it came to there being a responsible adult watching these hooligans so I was stuck with them all weekend. I went to dark places in my mind to escape the reality I was stuck in so figured I might as well put the dark places on paper. Q: Serena B. Miller, what was it like writing a dark Amish story?A: It was freeing, actually. I love and admire my Amish friends, but there is a dark side to the Amish that romance writers are expected to ignore. It is inevitable that a culture as strict as theirs can take a toll on the psyche. Sometimes that toll presents itself in extreme depression.Q: Derek E. Miller, do you always wear a bulletproof vest when you write?A: True story. Grandpa always did the dishes for grandma. He would say, "Proven scientific fact. No man has been shot by his wife while doing dishes." Well seeing how I'm not helping do dishes, laundry, or mowing the lawn when writing, I can't be too careful. Q: Jesse R. Lyle, are the tattoos all over your body the inspiration for your story Ancient Runes?A: Yes and No. The inspiration comes from knowing that everyone has a story whether big or small. And some of those stories are just like tattoos, some are hilarious or regretful, some are meaningful or spiritual, and yet some, are private reminders of a struggle or addiction one is trying to overcome. I guess the take-away is, be willing to listen, and pay attention to the people around you. Q: A.B. Alvarez, what is it with you and having to chop off body parts in your stories? A: There was no hacking of body parts in the Kidnapping Anna Trilogy though there was a lot of computer hacking. I think I had pent up body-hacking impulses that came out in the abandoned farmhouse where we did our writing. It is also true that the farmhouse was not abandoned, not filled with cobwebs, and not dark and foreboding thereby keeping me up every night wondering if I was going to make it out alive. Except that it was.

Four authors. Twelve stories. Alvarez: Who says I wasn't in the room with the others? Just because they couldn't see me. I mean, I wasn't in the room with them. At all. Not under the bed or in the closet which BTW needs a good cleaning. I was home sipping a fine Merlot while watching the ships travel down the Hudson. While I wrote about pits covered in sharp pointy pieces of glass. That takes a lot of concentration and focus. And a good Merlot.Serena B. Miller: After editing your stories, Alvarez, I think a little less Merlot might be in order? And please stay out of my closets. That last restraining order is still valid. Jesse R. Lyle: Bittersweet. Since I didn't have to listen to the droning-thunderous striking of keyboard keys from overzealous-caffeine driven digits, I could actually think straight, but I didn't get to trade attempted witty remarks with my fellow companions. Derek E. Miller: It was a dream. I was home enjoying a fine Craft Artisan Amish made Root Beer listening to the neighbor's dog bark way too much. But all that commotion was still better than listening to A.B. Alvarez constantly make laser sounds as he would write his futuristic sci fi stuff. You definitely need a good Root Beer to write.Q: Derek E. Miller, during your tour of duty in the military what was it like interacting with the aliens from Area 51?A: Turns out I was well prepared. Dealing with New Yorkers like A.B. Alvarez more than prepared me for interaction with an alien species. One of them even gave me two t-shirts. They have printed on them, "I Love Zork" and "The Big Abbsou." Q: Jesse R. Lyle, based on your fictitious medical degree from Johns Hopkins, did the details about genetics in your story help you make better breeding decisions about the multi-legged organisms you have running around your home?A: Oh, without a doubt my fictitious medical degree helped more than a legitimate medical degree. And yes, she might be a genetically created multi-legged organism, but she's my little multi-legged organism. MuHahaQ: Serena B. Miller, after reading Sunny I can see you owning multiple guns and not being afraid to use them. Have you ever sneaked into a foreign country with the express intent of overthrowing its government?A: That depends. Has California attained foreign country status yet? Q: A.B. Alvarez, the last time you went time traveling did you find your doppelganger?A: Is that question for me? I've never gone time traveling. If I did would I be here? Multiple time streams don't make any sense. That doesn't mean I haven't been visited by others who purport to be from a different time stream. Meet my doppelganger? Don't be silly. What would I do if I met myself? Kill him and take his place? Of course not He might try to kill me and take my place. By the way: why did you call me A.B. Alvarez?

The Fishes of the Western North Atlantic series, which began publication in the 1940s by Yale University’s Sears Foundation for Marine Research, was from its beginnings conceived to synthesize and make accessible the wealth of information in widely scattered published accounts of the fish fauna of the region for both the layman and the specialist, presenting critical reviews rather than compilations. These reference works are still considered valuable and of interest today to both general audiences and the academic community. As described in the Preface to the first volume, the series was “written on the premise that it should be useful to those in many walks of life—to those casually … interested …, to the sportsman …, to the fisherman …, as well as to the amateur ichthyologist and the professional scientist.” These books remain authoritative studies of the anadromous, estuarine, and marine fishes of the waters of the western North Atlantic from Hudson Bay southward to the Amazon, ranking as primary references for both amateurs and professionals interested in fishes, and as significant working tools for students of the sea.

In the comparative physiology of photoreception by the Protista and the invertebrates two aspects are emphasized: (1) the diversity of visual processes in these groups and (2) their bearing upon general mechanisms of photoreception. Invertebrates have evolved a far greater variety of adaptations than vertebrates modifications aiding survival in the remarkably different biotopes they occupy. The number of species in itself suggests this multiformity; each of them has peculiarities of its own, in morphology as well as in physiology and behavior. But these special adaptations are variations on a few great themes. Although the catalogue of invertebrate species is immense, the literature concerning them nearly rivals it in extent-even if one considers only that fraction dealing with visual physiology. Taxonomy proceeds by grouping the species, categorizing them in genera, families, orders, and progressively larger units. Similarly, comparative physiology aims at an analogous, more or less compre hensive, classification. This Part A of Volume VII/6, like Part B that follows it, emphasizes the broad questions that concern groups larger than the individual species; in some cases these questions have general applicability. The middle course between approaches that are too specialized and those that are too general is often elusive, but here we attempt to follow it. The vast number of special adaptations-probably, as we have said, as large as the number of species-is beyond the range even of a handbook.

This new edition provides an authoritative and up-to-date reference that you count on for its reliable information and straightforward explanation. Each chapter is written by a highly respected attorney who is an expert in the field. Yet the book is written without legal jargon, in plain English that anyone can understand. In it, the authors provide interpretations of many facets of the Occupational Safety and Health Act, review regulations and standards governing employee protection, and offer advice for dealing with regulatory authorities. The Handbook covers all of the important legal aspects of the Occupational Safety and Health Act with clearly written explanations of such issues as the boundaries of OSHA regulations, general administrative law concepts, and OSHA's enforcement tactics. It provides “Practitioner's Tips”—useful legal guidance given by experienced attorneys for complying with OSHA inspection regulations and enforcing employers' and employees' rights during inspections. It describes changes to the probable cause test under OSHA's “Warrant Requirement.” It also explains the legal and practical consequences facing a business not contesting OSHA citations, OSHA's use of “Monitoring Devices on Employees,” and more. This new edition covers major changes to the Hazard Communication Standard, new enforcement initiatives, updated regulations in the construction industry, new emergency response procedures, and more.

R. B. Cunninghame Graham was a well-known and hugely influential figure in late 19th- and early 20th-century Scottish politics and literature. This book explores Graham's early political views, his time as a Member of Parliament, his disillusionment with the Liberal Party and his reputation as the first declared 'socialist' MP. Using documentary evidence and tangible philosophical links, the book traces Graham's early political influences derived directly or indirectly from key 19th-century figures, particularly William Morris. It also examines Graham's anti-imperialist, anti-colonial and anti-racist speeches and writings, and his active support for women's rights and universal suffrage. Lachlan Munro strips away the mythology surrounding Graham to reveal an altogether more complex picture, exploring his political and literary achievements, during a time of enormous political, economic and cultural upheaval - the reverberations of which are still ongoing.

Robert Bontine Cunninghame Graham (24 May 1852 - 20 March 1936) was a Scottish politician, writer, journalist and adventurer. He was a Liberal Party Member of Parliament (MP); the first ever socialist member of the Parliament of the United Kingdom; a founder, and the first president, of the Scottish Labour Party; a founder of the National Party of Scotland in 1928; and the first president of the Scottish National Party in 1934. Youth: Cunninghame Graham was the eldest son of Major William Bontine of the Renfrew Militia and formerly a Cornet in the Scots Greys with whom he served in Ireland. His mother was Hon. Anne Elizabeth Elphinstone-Fleeming, daughter of Admiral Charles Elphinstone-Fleeming of Cumbernauld and a Spanish noblewoman Do a Catalina Paulina Alessandro de Jim nez, (who, reputedly, along with her second husband Admiral James Katon), heavily influenced Cunninghame Graham's upbringing. Thus the first language Cunninghame Graham learned was his mother's maternal tongue, Spanish. He spent most of his childhood on the family estate of Finlaystone in Renfrewshire and Ardoch in Dunbartonshire, Scotland, with his younger brothers Charles and Malise. After being educated at Harrow public school in England, Robert finished his education in Brussels, Belgium before moving to Argentina to make his fortune cattle ranching. He became known as a great adventurer and gaucho there, and was affectionately known as Don Roberto. He also travelled in Morocco disguised as a Turkish sheikh, prospected for gold in Spain, befriended Buffalo Bill in Texas, and taught fencing in Mexico City, having travelled there by wagon train from San Antonio de Bexar with his young bride sic "Gabrielle Chideock de la Balmondiere" a supposed half-French, half-Chilean poet..... Author Between 1888 and 1992, Graham was a prolific contributor to small-circulation socialist journals, but his literary career took off when he was recruited by Frank Harris to write for The Saturday Review in 1895, and he continued writing for 'The Saturday' until 1926, as well as other journals. His main form was the 'sketch', or sketch-tale', mostly descriptive, atmospheric works on South America and Scotland, which gave his work a unique aesthetic, which carried a subtext of anti-colonialism, nostalgia, and loss. T. E. Lawrence (of Arabia) decribed his Scottish sketches as "the rain-in-the-air-and-on-the-roof mournfulness of Scotch music in his time-past style . . .] snap-shots - the best verbal snapshots ever taken I believe." His many works were collected into anthologies. Subject matter included history, biography, poetry, essays, politics, travel and seventeen collections of short stories or literary sketches. Titles include Father Archangel of Scotland (1896 in conjunction with his wife Gabriella), Thirteen Stories (1900), Success (1902), Scottish Stories (1914) Brought Forward (1916), Hope (1917) and Mirages (1936). Biographies included: Hernando de Soto (1903), Doughty Deeds (1925), a biography of his great-great-grandfather, Robert Graham of Gartmore and Portrait of a Dictator (1933). His great-niece and biographer, Jean, Lady Polwarth, 7] published a collection of his short stories (or sketches) entitled Beattock for Moffatt and the Best of Cunninghame Graham (1979) and Alexander Maitland added his selection under the title Tales of Horsemen (1981). Professor John Walker published collections of Cunninghame Graham's South American Sketches (1978), Scottish Sketches (1982) and North American Sketches (1986) and Kennedy & Boyd are republishing the stories and sketches in five volumes. In 1988 The Century Travellers reprinted his Mogreb-el-Acksa (1898) and A Vanished Arcadia (1901). The former was the inspiration for George Bernard Shaw's play Captain Brassbound's Conversion. The latter helped inspire the award-winning film The Mission. More recently The Long Riders Guild Press have reprinted his equestrian travel works in their Cunninghame Graham Collecti
