Black Educational Leadership

Black Educational Leadership

Rachelle Rogers-Ard; Christopher B. Knaus

Routledge
2020
nidottu
This book explores Black educational leadership and the development of anti-racist, purpose-driven leadership identities. Recognizing that schools within the United States maintain racial disparities, the authors highlight Black leaders who transform school systems. With a focus on 13 leaders, this volume demonstrates how US schools exclude African American students and the impacts such exclusions have on Black school leaders. It clarifies parallel racism along the pathway to becoming teachers and school leaders, framing an educational pipeline designed to silence and mold educators into perpetrators of educational disparities. This book is designed for district administrators as well as faculty and students in Race and Ethnicity in Education, Urban Education, and Educational Leadership.

Planning in the Face of Crisis

Planning in the Face of Crisis

Rachelle Alterman

Critics of urban and regional planning argue that it is best suited to manage incremental change. Can a planner's skills and expertise be effective in handling a major crisis and large-scale change? The mass immigration from the former Soviet Union to Israel in the 1990s offers the opportunity to study one of the largest-scale (non-disaster) crisis situations in a democratic, advanced-economy country. This book recounts the fascinating saga of how policymakers and planners at both the national and local levels responded to the formidable demand for housing and massive urban growth. Planners forged new housing and land-use policies, and applied a streamlined (but controversial) planning law. The outputs were impressive. The outcomes and impacts changed the landscape and human-scape of Israel, heightening dilemmas of land use and urban policy in this high-density country.

I did not have to call into question how I lived my life until it I had to defend it in court. Two years ago, I won a legal case of relocating with my boys to Te Arai, freeing us from the restrictions my ex placed on us. The legal battle lasted five years, but the real fight began with the birth of my oldest son fourteen years ago. My vision remained the same. I've always lived my life on a trajectory of positivity and promise. Living in Te Arai/our dream home and Turangawaewae put my life on track for the first time in years. (In te reo Maori, our spiritual place, literally translated, where our two feet stand.) Shifting ME Softly describes some restrictions I faced through life. I fought illness at sixteen and was immobile for eighteen months after a snowboarding accident in my thirties. My biggest battle came from facing the legal system over parental arrangements for six years at forty. These hurdles, along with my degrees, gave me the experience and determination to support others. The message is clear. Do not let your current circumstances be your destiny. Restrictions can be a blessing. Stop and take stock of those blessings. How do these obstacles strengthen us? Using the philosophies of Psychosynthesis and Theta Healing and Leadership theories of Positive Psychology and Emotional Intelligence, Rachelle takes you on a journey of her life and learnings pivotal in transforming her health, wealth, and happiness. She entrusts you with her story, hoping it strengthens you, taking you forward.

Juxtaposition and the Elisha Cycle

Juxtaposition and the Elisha Cycle

This monograph examines the juxtaposition of narrative units in biblical narrative and the effect this has on interpretation. Early rabbinical and inner-biblical interpretations suggest that juxtaposition was an intentional device used by biblical editors and authors to shape the meaning of their material. Therefore, this monograph develops a framework for recognising the ways in which adjacent units interpret and re-interpret one another and presents this framework as an important hermeneutical tool. Stories and episodes that are linked chronologically affect one another through a relationship of causes and consequences. The categories of contradiction, corroboration and question and answer are also used to describe the types of interaction between narrative units and demonstrate how such dialogues create new meaning. Indicators in the text that guide the audience towards the intended interpretation are identified in order that a 'poetics' of juxtaposition is developed. The theoretical basis established in the first half of the monograph is then applied to the Elisha cycle. Each episode is interpreted independently and then read in juxtaposition with the surrounding episodes, producing a fresh literary reading of the cycle. Furthermore, in order to demonstrate how juxtaposition functioned as a diachronic process, attention is given to the literary history of the cycle. We conjecture earlier interpretations of the Elisha episodes and compare them to the final form of the cycle. Finally, the Elisha cycle is itself a story juxtaposed with other stories and so the same principles of interpretation are used to suggest the meaning of the cycle within the book of Kings.
