Impacts of Racism on White Americans

Impacts of Racism on White Americans

Praise for the first edition . . . "A welcome addition to the growing sociological literature that looks beyond the circumstances of victims for the solutions to various social problems." --Contemporary Sociology "A clear articulation of a number of historical, spatial, and international perspectives on race relations. The new and novel focus provides fresh insights into a field that has found the development of a unified theory elusive." --International Social Science Review Challenging the popularly held view that racism is disappearing as a social phenomenon, the second edition of Impacts of Racism on White Americans reexamines the questions proposed by its first edition and notes that one decade later little has changed. This stimulating collection of original papers focuses on the new ways in which white Americans act out racism and weighs the advantages and disadvantages that whites experience from racism. Drawing on evidence from the social and behavioral sciences, this timely revision argues that racism is essentially a problem of European Americans and that most whites do not benefit from racism in the long term. In addition, this volume holds that racism cannot be eliminated until it is viewed as a white problem that seriously compromises the quality of life. The concluding chapter of the first edition, which summarized the major insights and findings of that edition, has been reprinted and in the final chapter of this new edition, editors Benjamin P. Bowser and Raymond G. Hunt expand on recommendations and clearly illustrate how far we've come, and most important, how far we have to go. Sure to follow the success of its first edition, Impacts of Racism on White Americans will make a major contribution to our understanding of the impacts of racism while providing students and professionals in race/ethnic studies, sociology, urban studies, and social psychology with thought-provoking, quality material.

This book is a study of the factors and circumstances that lead to the establishment and development of an American Navy, and of the role of sea power in the founding, growth, and independence of the thirteen colonies and the protection and promotion of the national interest at home and abroad in the early years of the Republic. The very existence and prosperity of the colonies, which were created during an era of discovery and international rivalry for the spoils of new worlds, depended on the Royal navy and the merchant vessels of the mother country, a lesson learned by the colonial leaders as they sought a 'redress of wrongs' and then assumed leadership of a sovereign nation in the midst of a hostile and volatile world. The author of this book stresses the political, economic, and ideological considerations that motivated the colonial and national leaders as they conceived and implemented a concept of sea power.

Described by Colin Burrow as 'the richest surviving record of early Tudor poetry and of the literary activities of 16th-century women,' the Devonshire Manuscript (BL MS Add. 17492) is a verse miscellany belonging to the 1530s and early 1540s, including some 194 items including complete poems, verse fragments and excerpts from longer works, anagrams, and other ephemeral jottings attributed to Thomas Wyatt, Henry Howard Earl of Surrey, Lady Margaret Douglas, Richard Hattfield, Mary Fitzroy (née Howard), Thomas Howard, Edmund Knyvett, Anthony Lee, and Henry Stewart, as well transcriptions of the work of others or original works by prominent court figures such as Mary Shelton, Lady Margaret Douglas, Mary (Howard) Fitzroy, Lord Thomas Howard, and, possibly, Anne Boleyn. This edition publishes the contents of the manuscript in their entirety, documenting well the manuscript's place as the earliest sustained example in English of men and women writing together in a community.

The Henry VIII Manuscript contributes considerably to our critical understanding of the connections between poetry and power in early Renaissance society — because of the prominence of its chief author, the king himself, and also because of its literary reflection of the social and political elements of the early Tudor court. The lyrics of the Henry VIII Manuscript thoroughly document the fictions of the early Tudor court constructed and upheld by the courtiers of the day. As such, the Henry VIII Manuscript provides a rare opportunity for examining the light, earlier lyrical works of Henry VIII. Renaissance English Text Society v39.

Sweet Spicy Bite-Sized Delicious With minis., the author of forever ago. unleashes a provocative new collection of short stories, flash fiction, reflections, and verse on an unsuspecting public. By spinning tales about: a predatory schoolgirl, a narcissistic himbo, a desperate guncle, a stalker and his object of obsession, a fateful joyride in a vintage Barracuda, a marriage made in heaven that goes to hell, abject affairs with drug dealers, ...and more, Raymond G. Neal shines unforgiving and humorous light on sides of queer life in America that we aren't accustomed to seeing-sides that are sweaty, often messy, and distinctly unfiltered; sides we're taught not to discuss publicly and are told to pretend don't exist.Written with shrewd insight, wicked humor, and gloriously unfiltered candor, minis. redraws the boundaries between fact and fiction to create a narrative about growing up and living life queer, working class, and dysfunctional in America.CONTENT/TRIGGER WARNING: This collection has not been distilled for heterosexual consumption or approval. It contains frank depictions of bullying, queer sex, illicit drug use, sexual assault, and a bad hair day.READER DISCRETION IS ADVISED "Not all teachers are role models. Many lead fractured, disjointed lives that don't make much sense to anyone, least of all themselves. But if knowledge equals power, learning how not to do some things can be as valuable as learning how to do other things just right. Hopefully, it all shakes out in the end."- Raymond G. Neal

With retirement approaching and their children having flown the nest, lifelong nomad educators Raymond and his wife, Madeleine Mulaire, make the bold decision to uproot their lives and embark on another overseas posting to Guinea, marking their fourth move abroad.Under military rule following a coup that had taken place the previous year, the West African nation-state is in a state of incredible upheaval, proving challenging even for well-seasoned travellers like Raymond and Madeleine. Armed military personnel roam the streets, and outbreaks of political unrest-even violence-are not unusual. While Madeleine teaches and Raymond serves as director of the American School in Conakry, they find themselves faced with these forces, in addition to the more everyday difficulties one might expect to encounter as Westerners living in Africa: being forced to hand over bribes to local police, dealing with bouts of malaria and worms, and the general strains of living in a poor and underdeveloped nation with little of the conveniences one's used to.However, their passion for educating their students carries them through. As they immerse themselves more fully in the local culture, they find themselves inspired by the unwavering strength and resilience of the Guinean people. Moved by their desire to make a difference in the lives of those they teach, Raymond and Madeleine will ultimately find themselves utterly transformed, with a clearer sense of purpose than they thought imaginable.

As the world slowly pulled out of isolationism, and attempted to deal with the impact on the world, the meaning of "My Neighbor" started with a flicker of consciousness that sparked into flames. Horror spreads across the land, and hate provided the fuel One individual, attempting to glue the fabric of humanity and draw us out of complacency, attempted to stitch us into a coherent moral society. Yet the time for hatred had arrived over the entire world. Because we were all concerned about ourselves. We were not ready to admit that what happens over there actually impacts us here.
The Business of Waste

The Business of Waste

The advent of consumer societies in the United Kingdom and West Germany after 1945 led to the mass 'production' of garbage. This book compares the social, cultural and economic fallout of the growing volume and changing composition of waste in the two countries from 1945 to the present through sustained attention to changes in the business of handling household waste. Though the UK and Germany are similar in population density, degrees of urbanisation, and standardisation, the two countries took profoundly different paths from low-waste to throwaway societies, and more recently, towards the goal of 'zero-waste'. The authors explore evolving balances between public and private provision in waste services; the transformation of public cleansing into waste management; the role of government legislation and regulation; emerging conceptualisations of recycling and resource recovery; and the gradual shift of the industry's regulatory and business context from local to national and then to international.
Building on Air

Building on Air

The industrial gases industry originated in 1886, when a London-based company began producing high-purity oxygen. Initially, purified oxygen was a solution in search of a problem, but demand for it soared early in the twentieth century with the emergence of welding technology. By then, dramatic technological improvements in air separation and purification had emerged, as had most key firms dominating the industry today. Building on air in the decades that followed, the firms expanded their product range and geographical reach to create applications that were essential to every manufacturing process in the modern world, from semiconductor production to oil refining, waste water treatment, and steel-making. This is the first scholarly history of this vital but invisible industry from its origins to the present. Based on unparalleled access to company and public archives, the book explores business and technological development, industrial evolution, and the industry's local roots and international and global reach.

In 1945, Germany and Japan lay prostrate after total war and resounding defeat. By 1960, they had the second and fifth largest economies in the world respectively. This global leadership has been maintained ever since. How did these 'economic miracles' come to pass, and why were these two nations particularly adept at achieving them? Ray Stokes is the first to unpack these questions from comparative and international perspectives, emphasising both the individuals and companies behind this exceptional performance and the broader global political and economic contexts. He highlights the potent mixtures in both countries of judicious state action, effective industrial organisation, benign labour relations, and technological innovation, which they adapted constantly – sometimes painfully – to take full advantage of rapidly growing post-war international trade and globalisation. Together, they explain the spectacular resurgence of Deutschland AG and Japan Incorporated to global economic and technological leadership, which they have sustained to the present.
