This book is a sequel to An Introduction to Risk and Return from Common Stocks (The MIT Press, 1969), although it is fully self-contained and can be read independently. Both books describe in non-technical language the behavior of common stock prices as revealed by formal statistical work. In the process they offer a broad survey of recent quantitative academic research on the subject, much of which is currently in an inaccessible form.The earlier book, which the New York Times says "rates high as reading for every professional investor," was concerned with the basic factors affecting risk and return from common stocks. The present work is concerned primarily with unusual factors that may influence the value of an investment. It is divided into three parts: the first considers various company decisions that may affect the price of its stock (decisions on capital structure, dividend policy, and acquisitions); the second looks at particular types of activity in the stock (insider trading, short selling, and secondary distributions); while the third considers securities that are convertible to common stock. Richard Brealey continues to cover new ground. Little of the material in this book can be found in existing investments texts, and like his first book, it should provide an invaluable source of information for the professional investor and may well be received in the same spirit.

Statistical Learning from a Regression Perspective considers statistical learning applications when interest centers on the conditional distribution of the response variable, given a set of predictors, and when it is important to characterize how the predictors are related to the response. As a first approximation, this is can be seen as an extension of nonparametric regression. Among the statistical learning procedures examined are bagging, random forests, boosting, and support vector machines. Response variables may be quantitative or categorical. Real applications are emphasized, especially those with practical implications. One important theme is the need to explicitly take into account asymmetric costs in the fitting process. For example, in some situations false positives may be far less costly than false negatives. Another important theme is to not automatically cede modeling decisions to a fitting algorithm. In many settings, subject-matter knowledge should trump formal fitting criteria. Yet another important theme is to appreciate the limitation of one’s data and not apply statistical learning procedures that require more than the data can provide. The material is written for graduate students in the social and life sciences and for researchers who want to apply statistical learning procedures to scientific and policy problems. Intuitive explanations and visual representations are prominent. All of the analyses included are done in R.

Memoirs of a Black Philosopher is a chronicle of the life and times of Richard A. Jones. In these memoirs, Jones relates the dislocations and disillusionments of Black people in the great migration of Southern Blacks to Northern cities. He recalls the educational trauma brought on by Brown v Board, and his education in the inner-city public schools of Washington DC and Detroit Michigan. Beginning his higher education in the HCBUs at Fisk and Howard Universities, after serving in the US Air Force, Jones begins his educational diaspora in Midwestern universities. His struggles to attain an education culminates in a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Minot State University in 1970. After working as a federal Head Start director, Marketing representative at IBM, and college Minority Affairs Director, Jones begins a new career as a high school mathematics teacher. Never satisfied with his “education,” he begins a new direction in academic philosophy. After completing an MA in philosophy at the University of Denver, he enrolls in a PhD program at the University of Colorado at the age of forty-nine. After completing the degree, Jones teaches philosophy at Kansas State University, followed by returning to Howard University, where he finished his teaching career. At Howard, Jones realizes that “philosophy is more” than teaching and writing. He becomes the Co-coordinator of the Radical Philosophy Association (RPA). His political activity with RPA culminates in conferences in Cuba and South Africa, where he sees the people’s struggles with global capitalism. Jones left Howard in 2013 and continues his “philosophical praxes” in contemplation and writing. His story is one of the unending struggles for human dignity.

The miners' strike against Pittston Coal in 1989-1990, which spread throughout southwestern Virginia, southern West Virginia, and eastern Kentucky, was one of the most important strikes in the history of American labor, and, as Richard Brisbin observes, "one of the longest and largest incidents of civil disorder and civil disobedience in the United States in the second half of the twentieth century." The company aggressively sought to break the strike, and workers and their families used a variety of tactics-lawful and unlawful-to resist Pittston's efforts as the situation quickly turned ugly. In A Strike like No Other Strike: Law and Resistance during the Pittston Coal Strike of 1989-1990, Richard Brisbin offers a compelling study of the exercise of political power. In considering the legal significance of the strike, Brisbin asks the larger question of whether even extreme transgression or resistance can fracture the "imagined coherence of the law." He shows how each party in the strike invoked the law to justify its actions while attacking those of the other side as unlawful. In the end, both sides lost; although the U.S. Supreme Court ultimately ruled in favor of the union, most of the strikers faced elimination of their jobs and an ongoing struggle for pensions and health benefits.
