The accompanying volume to an exhibition of Robert Rauschenberg’s personal collection, held at Gagosian Gallery, New York. Expanding upon the exhibition at Gagosian Gallery in New York (2011), this book doubles as an accompanying "reader" and features works by over sixty-five artists from Rauschenberg’s collection, including Joseph Beuys, Mathew Brady, Alexander Calder, Jim Dine, Jasper Johns, Brice Marden, Henri Matisse, Ed Ruscha, Cy Twombly, and Andy Warhol. Art historian and scholar Robert Storr contributes an essay focusing on Rauschenberg’s inspirations, friendships, and affinities as well as their myriad of interrelations. Biographies of each artist written by Mimi Thompson complement the illustrations of artworks and rare archival photographs, and show the influence of the artist’s work within Rauschenberg’s unique collection.
Tate Introductions: Robert Rauschenberg
A lively and accessible introduction to the life and work of Robert Rauschenberg (1925-2008), one of the most inventive and influential artists of the post-war period. An important influence on Pop artists in the 1960s, Rauschenberg worked across a variety of media - painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, silkscreen, lithography, and performance - and actively collaborated with musicians, choreographers and dancers, and with engineers and scientists to pursue the potentials offered by new technologies. Part of the Tate Introduction series, this book offers a concise and engaging account of Rauschenberg's life, his art, and the ongoing debates concerning his significance.
Off the Wall: A Portrait of Robert Rauschenberg
Calvin Tomkins first discovered the work of Robert Rauschenberg in the late 1950s, when he began to look seriously at contemporary art. While gazing at Rauschenberg's painting Double Feature, Tomkins felt compelled to make some kind of literal connection to the work, and it is in that sprit that "for the last forty years it's been his] ambition to write about contemporary art not as a critic or a judge, but as a participant." Tomkins has spent many of those years writing about Robert Rauschenberg, whom he rapidly came to see as "one of the most inventive and influential artists of his generation." So it seemed natural to make Rauschenberg the focus of Off the Wall, which deals with the radical changes that have made advanced visual art such a powerful force in the world. Off the Wall chronicles the astonishingly creative period of the 1950s and 1960s, a high point in American art. In his in his collaborations with Merce Cunningham and John Cage, and as a pivotal figure linking abstract expressionism and pop art, Rauschenberg was part of a revolution during which artists moved art off the walls of museums and galleries and into the center of the social scene. Rauschenberg's vitally important and productive career spans this revolution, reaching beyond it to the present day. Featuring the artists and the art world surrounding Rauschenberg--from Jackson Pollock, and Willem de Kooning to Jasper Johns, Frank Stella, and Andy Warhol, together with dealers Betty Parsons, and Leo Castelli, and the patron Peggy Guggenheim--Tomkins's stylish and witty portrait of one of America's most original and inspiring artists is fascinating, enlightening, and very entertaining.

Reappraising Rauschenberg across the 20th century, with a particular focus on his relationship to Italy and its most salient artistic movements Italy has always been entwined with the work of Robert Rauschenberg (1925-2008)--from his first visit at the age of 26 to his capturing of the International Grand Prize in Painting at the 1964 Venice Biennale. He continued to reference the country in his oeuvre, whether through found objects and scrap metal picked up in Venice and Naples or through more metaphorical references such as his Bellini print series. In celebration of the centenary of his birth, the Museo del Novecento staged an exhibition to an artist who without hyperbole can be considered one of the 20th century's most revolutionary artists. This bilingual English/Italian catalog interweaves his tireless decades-long experimentation--across sculpture, painting, assemblage, installation and more--with the movements that shaped his philosophy, from Futurism to Arte Povera.

This collection of 100 writings by Robert Rauschenberg reveals the artist’s gift for prose and the importance of his relationship to language The American artist Robert Rauschenberg (1925–2008) won acclaim and awards for his diverse oeuvre that spanned six decades and included paintings, sculpture, prints, photography, and performance. Less well known is the role that writing played in his creative process. Rauschenberg self-identified as dyslexic and did not publish extensively, leading to the widely held assumption that he was not an artist who wrote. This book corrects the record, showcasing 100 passages, many published here for the first time, from Rauschenberg’s robust body of written work. Comprising correspondence, artist notes, testimony, speeches, and more, this collection brings to light the artist’s love of language and reveals that writing was, in fact, central to Rauschenberg’s practice. The writings, illustrated with reproductions in the artist’s distinctive hand, are infused with visual and intellectual lyricism, humor, and insight, and span topics from the freedom of artistic expression to environmental concerns. This beautiful volume, which also features an essay by artist Martha Tuttle (b. 1989) about why artists’ writings matter, adds new depth to our understanding of Rauschenberg’s life and work. Published in association with the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation

In the novel's Preface, the Author states: "In a few short words, the content of the book is this: A boy dedicates himself to the clerical profession with the fire of childlike enthusiasm, the youth goes astray in his profession, and the man, 'because not all flowering dreams ripened, ' has the notion of giving it up and 'fleeing to the desert.' Yet Heaven has decided otherwise. With resignation he comes back to himself and begins again to believe in his calling. Besides this, everything which is presented in the book belongs partly to the characteristics of the hero appearing in it, partly to the characteristics of our time chiefly with regard to religious, ecclesiastical, and especially clerical matters."
