Meyer's Encyclopedia, these two volumes cover a wide range of topics in protein research. Clearly divided into sections on structure, modeling, expression, analysis and others, the chapters are designed to aid readers of all levels of expertise: Each chapter includes a glossary of the most important keywords, a concise summary of the article concerned and comprehensive references for further reading. Similarly, the uniform structure of the articles makes them very easy to use, resulting in a ready reference for molecular and cell biologists, biochemists, biophysicists, and biotechnologists, as well as those working in the pharmaceutical and biotechnological industries.
Medicare Prospective Payment and the Shaping of U.S. Health Care

Medicare Prospective Payment and the Shaping of U.S. Health Care

This is the definitive work on Medicare's prospective payment system (PPS), which had its origins in the 1972 Social Security Amendments, was first applied to hospitals in 1983, and came to fruition with the Balanced Budget Act of 1997. Here, Rick Mayes and Robert A. Berenson, M.D., explain how Medicare's innovative payment system triggered shifts in power away from the providers (hospitals and doctors) to the payers (government insurers and employers) and how providers have responded to encroachments on their professional and financial autonomy. They conclude with a discussion of the problems with the Medicare Modernization Act of 2003 and offer prescriptions for how policy makers can use Medicare payment policy to drive improvements in the U.S. health care system. Mayes and Berenson draw from interviews with more than sixty-five major policy makers-including former Treasury secretary Robert Rubin, U.S. Representatives Pete Stark and Henry Waxman, former White House chief of staff Leon Panetta, and former administrators of the Health Care Financing Administration Gail Wilensky, Bruce Vladeck, Nancy-Ann DeParle, and Tom Scully-to explore how this payment system worked and its significant effects on the U.S. medical landscape in the past twenty years. They argue that, although managed care was an important agent of change in the 1990s, the private sector has not been the major health care innovator in the United States; rather, Medicare's transition to PPS both initiated and repeatedly intensified the economic restructuring of the U.S. health care system.

A New Life For Robert Johnson

A New Life For Robert Johnson

Robert Johnson has lost his job, his car, his apartment, and the love of his life. What else could go wrong? He waited in his fifth floor rental, with the spectacular view of San Francisco Bay, staying until the last minute before he must leave. It had been the center of what had been the best year of his life. Tomorrow morning, the first day of April, 2015 and his fortieth birthday, he would be living in the back of the used Honda Odyssey van that had replaced the leased 2014 Porsche Carrea S which was relinquished a week earlier. He was alone and homeless. It had all happened in exactly one year. His high paying job with the start up Engstrum Technologies had, along with the company, abruptly come to an end. With his big signing bonus he had rented the apartment, leased the Porsche and met Sandra Williams, all on the same day. They would be room mates at first, to share expenses, but then became lovers. She had left him two days ago leaving only a letter explaining her departure. The rental furniture had been returned and all his possessions were in the middle of the now empty living room. Four small boxes with his clothes in two suitcases and a hanger bag. He spent his last hour setting up his almost new iPad3 which had replaced his previous one that had made an unplanned fall from the apartment's balcony. It was then that a strange looking Icon came up on the screen and then "You Have The Chance To Visit History As It Happening. Do You Have The Courage To Go There?" appeared in frightening blood red script. "ENTER" would have to wait as it was time for him to leave.Early the next morning, 42 miles North of the city in Point Reyes Station, the story of his new life began.

Confessions of a Rain God

Confessions of a Rain God

About Comics
2012
nidottu
A droll comedy/drama about love and the gods, Confessions of a Rain God is set among the classic Mayas. They, of course, did not predict the end of the world. (It caught them by surprise.) The book is narrated by the Mayan rain god Chac -- long-nosed and elderly -- the most important god of the Mayas, who depend on his rain for their very lives. Chac has the misfortune to fall in love with a beautiful young Maya girl, Tika. But physical love between a god and a mortal is forbidden, causing no end of frustration for the droll old fellow. How he copes -- and fails to cope -- is a bawdy, romantic tale of love and blood, which gives a new twist to the questionable saying, Love Conquers All.
