Racial Diversity and Social Capital

Racial Diversity and Social Capital

Rodney E. Hero

Cambridge University Press
2007
pokkari
Race and racial diversity are important aspects of America and have been shown to substantially affect social relations and the political system, often in ways inconsistent with the values of equality. However, greater civic association and a general sense of community, embodied in the concept of social capital, are said to have tremendous beneficial effects and profoundly influence American society. This 2007 study juxtaposes and critically assesses two bodies of research that have reached different conclusions on these issues. Is America's legacy of racial inequality an 'evil twin' of the benefits of social capital? By analysing the social outcomes for racial minorities, in addition to other dimensions of American politics, the author shows that the impact of racial diversity consistently outweighs that of social capital.

The Honorable John S. Wilder has served the constituents of Tennessee for over forty-years, and this historical accomplishment serves as the foundation of this work. In his political life, Lieutenant Governor Wilder has directly or indirectly impacted some of the most important administrative and public policy decisions over this period of time. Through archival document analysis and personal interviews with the Lieutenant Governor and many of his closest aids, political colleagues, and staunch opponents, the authors of this text have traced the history of John S. Wilder's accomplishments and defeats from the late 1950s to the present. This triangulation of data collection and analysis helped the authors uncover forgotten political stories, and assisted in substantiating facts about many of the Lieutenant Governor's major political decisions. Highlighted in the text are Wilder's political triumphs over two coup attempts within the Democratic Party to oust him as Speaker of the Senate in the late 1980s. These efforts failed when the longest serving State Legislator in American history reached across party lines to maintain control of the second most powerful position in Tennessee state government. Now in his late 80's, Wilder is still determined as ever to continue leading the Tennessee Senate well into the twenty-first century. This book chronicles the political career of the man from Somerville.

Black–Latino Relations in U.S. National Politics

Black–Latino Relations in U.S. National Politics

Rodney E. Hero; Robert R. Preuhs

Cambridge University Press

Social science research has frequently found conflict between Latinos and African Americans in urban politics and governance, as well as in the groups' attitudes toward one another. Rodney E. Hero and Robert R. Preuhs analyze whether conflict between these two groups is also found in national politics. Based on extensive evidence on the activities of minority advocacy groups in national politics and the behavior of minority members of Congress, the authors find the relationship between the groups is characterized mainly by non-conflict and a considerable degree of independence. The question of why there appears to be little minority intergroup conflict at the national level of government is also addressed. This is the first systematic study of Black–Latino intergroup relations at the national level of United States politics.

Although it was the largest and final battle of the Pacific War, the Battle for Okinawa has long been overshadowed by other dramatic events in 1945. The books that have been written about it emphasise the role of infantrymen, armour, and U.S. Marines. This work takes a fresh perspective and focuses on the vital role played by the U.S. Army’s forward artillery observers—the eyes and ears of American artillery who were among the least recognised heroes of the war. According to Rodney Earl Walton, U.S. artillerymen matched Japanese gunners in intensity and surpassed them in effectiveness because their forward observers were able to provide a much shorter response time to requests for artillery support. Divided into teams consisting of four or five men led by an artillery lieutenant, these observers would spend three days on the front lines directing artillery against enemy positions, return to their artillery battery for three days, and then rotate up to the line of battle again. While trying to maximise the damage inflicted on the enemy, the men had to deal with the ever-present possibility of firing on their own forces. The ability to shift artillery fire throughout the battlefield was a new development in World War II, and its evolution is fully examined in the book. Walton, the son of one of the forward observers on Okinawa, spent more than twenty years investigating what happened to his father and other artillerymen during the conflict. Interviews with the artillerymen and the infantrymen they supported are central to his story, which is filled with gripping and sometimes humorous accounts of what happened. The work stands as a stirring tribute from the “baby boom generation” to the “greatest generation.”

This is a daily inspirational study book, based on a pattern to read your Bible through in one year. Rev. Rodney Whittle, along with his congregation, used this plan for many years to read their Bible through; it was such a blessing to him personally. He decided to follow that same format, as he wrote this book. There are two passages to read a day, a morning Old Testament passage and an evening New Testament passage. He would take an inspirational thought he received from that passage and write a study. As he wrote the monthly booklets, he didn't necessarily do them in sequential order and he only lacked eight days of his last month (January), before he passed away. His wife, Grace, worked and completed the eight days that remained, with other materials he had written in times past. Rodney E. Whittle was born in Cereal, Alberta, Canada, on October 29, 1928, and died on September 8, 2007. At his home, two missionaries from the Canadian Sunday School Mission arrived on bicycles to do missionary work. Through the ministry of these men, Rodney was wonderfully converted and called to preach the gospel. He spent the years 1944-1950 at Prairie Bible Institute, where the missionary boys were attending. He met his wife, Grace at Prairie and they married on August 28, 1950 and celebrated 57 happy years together. He had four daughters, ten grandchildren, and six great grandchildren at the time of his passing. He pastored and helped many churches; Houston Texas, Dallas Texas, St. Louis Missouri, Minneapolis Minnesota, Nassau Bahamas, and Kingston Jamaica. He was pastoring in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, at the time of his death.

Finding Jesus Christ in Proverbs is truly the unique feature of WISE WORDS FOR EACH DAY: A DAILY DEVOTIONAL ON PROVERBS. Based on Jesus' own words in Luke 24:25-27, this seldom used biblical word finds Christ, the Wisdom of God (1 Cor. 1:30) in almost all of the Proverbs. Further, the beautiful commissioned cover painting based on Proverbs 8:1 depicts the very biblical chapter that settled the Arian controversy over the divinity of Christ in the Fourth Century A.D.Uniqueness is also in the format among Proverbs devotionals in that it covers a large portion of Proverbs by matching up Day One of each month with Proverbs Chapter One, Day Two with Proverbs Chapter Two, and so on. Each day also provides a crafted PRAYER and FOR FURTHER STUDY/WORD CONNECT section for those who want to go deeper than the 2-3 minute daily dosage of Wisdom. The FORWARD is written by award-winning Christian author, The Rev. Dr. Hal Senkbeil, who opines on the devotional's unique emphasis, "it unpacks each wonderful saying not as a moralism, but yet another dimension of Christ's virtues given the baptized faithful to apply in their daily lives."Finding Jesus Christ in Proverbs is truly the unique feature of WISE WORDS FOR EACH DAY: A DAILY DEVOTIONAL ON PROVERBS. Why God Made Pillows: A Child's Lament

Why God Made Pillows: A Child's Lament

Rodney E. Stewart

Rod's reflections of childhood abuse at the hands of a difficult stepfather who was also a church pastor take readers down an intriguing path. Juxtaposed with these extremely challenging elements was a struggle with his musical talent, effectively used to tether him to painful family dynamics. However, Rod's gift of music propels him from the worst experiences of growing up through difficult family situations to a personal realization of God's love, grace and peace. "Pillows" is a must read for anyone hungering to understand how God helps the helpless to survive life's worst and thrive in spite of it. Though heart-wrenching at times, he interjects humor on occasion, no doubt to camouflage some of the horrors he faced. Perhaps to that end, that laughter was often his saving grace. Seeing how beautifully Rod's spiritual understanding and musical gift are portrayed through his original songs, one would not have expected anything less from him than this brilliant work. When W.C.'s car rumbled up the driveway, it was amazing how quickly and drastically the climate changed at home. Our hearing became so acute we rarely got caught by surprise. But once every blue moon he did manage to sneak up on us, and by God, you'd better hope you weren't doing anything that could even be perceived as wrong. In fact, you'd better hope HE hadn't had a bad day, even if it had nothing to do with you. No matter what we were doing, the hum of that big Bonneville's motor made us scatter like roaches when the lights are turned on. We mastered that survival game because God help us if Mom wasn't home to be our buffer. We've all heard this before, "His bark is worse than his bite " Yeah, well, in our case, his bark was bitter, his venomous bite worse. That constant duress exacted its toll, especially on me and my brother. During one of the countless times we found ourselves in trouble with our stepfather, he made this declaration to us, "I'd rather get my head cut off than tell a lie " He uttered that line when he was searching for the truth about something we had or maybe hadn't done. Over the years my brother and I parroted that line in such a mocking way, it dripped with sarcasm that targeted the Rev's hypocrisy. Unfortunately, W.C.'s own lying made it impossible to build integrity with us since by then we'd already found him to have a problematic relationship with the truth. In fact, at times lying seemed to be his preferred option, despite that lofty assertion he'd made earlier. We remembered that infamous phrase, "I'd rather get my head cut off than tell a lie." We'd rehearse it each and every time that dubious statement was proven to be a lie. When adults play fast and loose with the truth, they end up digging a hole too deep to climb out of, destroying credibility they may have once had. This isn't Einstein stuff here, just good old horse sense.
