"This book contains a selection from my writings on Art extending over a period of twenty years. Some essays have never before been published in England; and I have also added a good deal of new matter and made slight corrections throughout. When we look at ancient works of art we habitually treat them not merely as objects of aesthetic enjoyment but also as successive deposits of the human imagination. It is indeed this view of works of art as crystallised history that accounts for much of the interest felt in ancient art by those who have but little aesthetic feeling and who find nothing to interest them in the work of their contemporaries where the historical motive is lacking and they are left face to face with bare aesthetic values. I once knew an old gentleman who had retired from his city office to a country house - a fussy, feeble little being who had cut no great figure in life. He had built himself a house which was preternaturally hideous; his taste was deplorable and his manners indifferent; but he had a dream, the dream of himself as an exquisite and refined intellectual dandy living in a society of elegant frivolity. To realise this dream he had spent large sums in buying up every scrap of eighteenth-century French furniture which he could lay hands on. These he stored in an immense upper floor in his house which was always locked except when he went up to indulge in his dream and to become for a time a courtier at Versailles doing homage to the du Barry, whose toilet-tables and what-nots were strewn pell-mell about the room without order or effect of any kind. Such is an extreme instance of the historical way of looking at works of art. For this old gentleman, as for how many an American millionaire, art was merely a help to an imagined dream life." ...]This book is a reprint of the wonderful work originally published in 1920.

""Last Lectures"" is a collection of lectures delivered by the renowned art historian and critic, Roger Fry, in the final years of his life. Fry was a leading figure in the Bloomsbury Group, a circle of writers, artists, and intellectuals who exerted a significant influence on British culture in the early 20th century. The lectures cover a wide range of topics related to art, including the history of painting, the principles of composition, and the role of art in society. Fry's insights are informed by his deep knowledge of art history and his own experiences as a painter and critic. The lectures are presented in a clear and engaging style, making them accessible to both scholars and general readers. This book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history and theory of art, as well as the intellectual and cultural milieu of the Bloomsbury Group. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.

At the age of 48, when she moved to the Isle of Wight, Julia Margaret Cameron (1815-1879) was given a camera by her daughter: "It might amuse you, Mother, to try to photograph during your solitude at Freshwater." The gift was to begin Cameron’s short but prolific career as one of photography’s first great artists. "From the first moment I handled my lens with a tender ardour, and it has become to me as a living thing, with voice and memory and creative vigour." The modern interest in Cameron’s photography began with the pioneering 1926 book by her great-niece Virginia Woolf and art critic Roger Fry. Their essays and the original plates are reprinted here, together with Cameron’s own account of her life in photography, Annals of My Glass House, her only surviving poem, On a Portrait, and an introduction by Tristram Powell. Thirty-nine plates and other illustrations have been added, including many of Cameron’s most famous images.

In this book, you will discover ways to guard your heart and remove ungodly, destructive forms of fear such as anxiety, worry, stress, phobias and panic. When Jesus says, "Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid" (John 14:27), He means that it is possible to live in peace. It's important to know that with the commands of God are the promises of God.Fear and anxiety, once firmly established, rob the individual of joy. Not all fear is bad. God created a fear response within us for our protection - for fight, flight, or freeze. But when fear becomes a part of our daily lives even when no imminent danger presents itself, we cease to enjoy the abundant living that our Lord promised. There is an old Greek proverb that says, "The bow that is always bent will soon break." What that proverb seems to be implying is that the person who is always under pressure, who never has an opportunity to release or let go, will soon break into a million pieces. If there is ever a proverb that fits our society this is it. Many people, like that bow, are strung out, full of tension, turmoil, fear, and frustration. If I had to choose one word to summarize how people feel today, I would choose the word worried. Perhaps you have certain concerns on your mind. You may be worried about the conflict with Iran, the economy or personal finances. Parents are worried about their children; children are worried about their parents. Some people worry all the time. If they are not worrying, they are worried that they have nothing to worry about.

Embracing Fry Bread

Embracing Fry Bread

When he was out playing Indian, enacting Hollywood-inspired scenarios, it never occurred to the child Roger Welsch that the little girl sitting next to him in school was Indian. A lifetime of learning later, Welsch's enthusiasm is undimmed, if somewhat more enlightened. In Embracing Fry Bread Welsch tells the story of his lifelong relationship with Native American culture, which, beginning in earnest with the study of linguistic practices of the Omaha tribe during a college anthropology course, resulted in his becoming an adopted member and kin of both the Omaha and the Pawnee tribes. With requisite humility and a healthy dose of humor, Welsch describes his long pilgrimage through Native life, from lessons in the vagaries of "Indian time" and the difficulties of reservation life, to the joy of being allowed to participate in special ceremonies and developing a deep and lasting love of fry bread. Navigating another culture is a complicated task, and Welsch shares his mistakes and successes with engaging candor. Through his serendipitous wanderings, he finds that the more he learns about Native culture the more he learns about himself—and about a way of life whose allure offers true insight into indigenous America.
