Winner of "In The Margins" Top Ten Best Books for Teens Award 2015, awarded to relevant books for our communities that validate, illuminate and humanize those living in the margins. If you asked Ruby, she'd tell you she's happy with her life. She's tough and independent and doesn't depend on anyone else. The road that has led her here has not been easy, and she's blocked a lot of it from her memory. But things aren't as rosy as she would have everyone believe, and the road ahead of her is filled not only with gangs, drugs, and depression, but other challenges that Ruby hasn't even imagined. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ If I could rate a book 10 stars outta 5, I would... This book was absolutely amazing and I would go through everything I loved about it if I could, but that's the thing-I loved EVERYTHING. Every single last detail... Definitely one of the best books I have EVER read. -Britt, Goodreads reviewer ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I sure would love to see this book as a movie. Her stories are so believable and you can't help but feel like you know these people. You find your self crying, laughing and feeling the characters emotions. Now if an author can make you cry and feel every emotion in a story, she is one hell of an author. -Pamela, Goodreads reviewer

Named as one of '50 Writers You Should Read Now' by The Guardian. From the award-winning author of The Rift, Nina Allan, this early novel cements her reputation as one of the most interesting contemporary speculative fiction writers. Ruby tells the story of Ruby Castle told in snapshots and fleeting glimpses and secret histories, in tales repeated and reinvented by those who fall under the horror film actress's spell: her childhood sweetheart, an antiquarian bookseller with a passion for magical artifacts, the mistress of the poet who was once Castle's lover, a young girl in a future Russia who dreams of the stars. Worlds collide, and the boundaries between the real and the fantastic begin to break down. Is Ruby Castle a living person or a collective fantasy? By the time the final page of Ruby is turned, the world that Castle created through her films has become dangerously indistinguishable from our own.

Succeeding in a professional career can be challenging for anyone – how much more so for a Sikh woman facing the restrictions and traditions imposed by her family and culture and also the unjust limitations caused by racism at work. In her latest book, Satwant Rait narrates the inspiring life story of Ruby, a Sikh woman born in India who migrated to England. Ruby faced many challenges throughout her life, both cultural and institutional. She overcame these hurdles through her constant hard work, dedication, and perseverance along with maintaining her Sikh faith and family values. As a young girl, Ruby had to struggle to be allowed the opportunity to study at university, yet she achieved her goal and gained many qualifications as well as developing a successful career in libraries. She was rewarded with the post of a lecturer along with working in a full-time job as a school librarian) Under the Sikh tradition, a girl’s parents would choose her husband. Ruby accepted her parents’ decision and married Rajan. The couple then migrated to England, where Ruby had two children, resumed her library career and continued to study. In achieving her academic and career success, Ruby was a pioneering woman in her Sikh community. Ruby broke cultural barriers and proved that women can have satisfying careers as well as a family. Ruby had a change of vocation in her retirement during and after her husband’s illness and death, working in hospital chaplaincy. As in her library career, however, she found that racism existed in her new field which not only shocked her but also hurt her as this work became her passion. This led Ruby to research hospital chaplaincy provision and to publish her findings, advocating for greater access to pastoral care for Sikhs and other minority faiths. Ruby believed that to bring equality and equity, words are not enough and there is a need for firm commitment and meaningful actions.
