The American Surname Series seeks to aid beginning genealogists in the most basic aspect of building a family tree-- understanding the origins of one's surname. These reference works trace the evolution of a given surname from medieval times to the present, and lay out for the reader important bibliographic references as they start their search for ancestors. Each book explains the connection of the surname under study to many aspects of British and American history, and details important record sources for genealogical research.Ryan P. Jordan holds a BA in History from UCLA (1998) and a Ph.D in History from Princeton University (2004). He has taught at the University of San Diego, UC San Diego, and National University in La Jolla, CA.

"Culture of honor" is what social scientists call a society that organizes social life around maintaining and defending reputation. In an honor culture, because reputation is everything, people will go to great lengths to defend their reputations and those of their family members against real and perceived threats and insults. While most human societies throughout history can be described as "honor cultures," the United States is particularly well known for having a deeply rooted culture of honor, especially in the American South and West. In Honor Bound, social psychologist Ryan P. Brown integrates social science research, current events, and personal stories to explore and explain how honor underpins nearly every aspect of our lives, from spontaneous bar fights to organized acts of terrorism, romantic relationships, mental health and well-being, unsportsmanlike conduct in football, the commission of suicide, foreign policy decisions by political leaders, and even how parents name their babies. Sometimes the effects of living in an honor culture are subtle and easily missed--there are fewer nursing homes in the American south, as more parents live with their children as they age--and sometimes the effects are more dramatic, as in the case that there are more school shootings in honor states, but they are always relevant. By illuminating a surprising and pervasive thread that has endured in our culture for centuries, Brown's narrative will captivate those raised in these types of honor cultures who wish to understand themselves, and those who wish to better understand their neighbors.

At its founding, the United States was an overwhelmingly Protestant country. However, over the last 250 years, it has become increasingly diverse with tens of millions of Catholics, millions of Latter-day Saints, Muslims, Hindus, and Jews, alongside a rapidly increasing share of Americans who claim no religious affiliation at all. The American Religious Landscape uses an in-depth statistical analysis of large datasets to answer foundational questions about this diversity, such as: How many Hindus are there in the US? Which state has the highest concentration of Muslims? Are atheists more highly educated than the general population? How many Roman Catholics attend Mass weekly? It focuses on the overall size, geographic distribution, and demographic composition of twelve different religious groups in short and accessible chapters that, taken together, serve as a basic introduction to the state of religion in America. Through dozens of charts, graphs, and maps--designed for readability and clarity--readers will be left with a solid understanding of the contours of contemporary American religion and what it could look like in the future.

A fascinating guide to the secret worlds of the intertidal zoneThe vast and diverse California coast is an awe-inspiring place of exploration and discovery, full of life forms that are shockingly unfamiliar. Intertidal fish that can breathe in air, worms that build entire reefs, and seaweeds that can be mistaken for tar spots—these are as common as the more familiar barnacles that eat with their feet. Unicorn snails lie still on the rocks as they drill into the shells of their prey, while purple urchins nestle into sides of rock walls and keyhole limpets fend off sea stars. Surfgrass covers tidepools and protects sensitive species from sun and heat while welcoming animals like spiny lobsters and kelpfish to cruise atop its tangled blades. In this guidebook, scientific experts describe how land and water shape specific ecosystems of the intertidal zone. Richly illustrated and accessibly written, Between the Tides in California transforms readers into nearshore detectives, with each species offering unique clues about the environment around them.Features include:• Profiles of sites to visit ranging from remote seashores on the northern coast to the popular beaches of Southern California• The fascinating stories behind both common and less familiar animal and plant species• A lively introduction to how coastal ecosystems work and why no two beaches are ever alike
