Holmes & Watson

Holmes & Watson

S. C. Roberts

British Library Publishing
2018
sidottu
A classic book on two of English literature's most iconic characters. First published in 1953, this is one of the earliest and best studies of Sherlock Holmes. S. C. Roberts searches Conan Doyle's stories for clues and develops biographies of the characters, revealing information about their lives and personalities which less observant readers may fail to notice. Holmes & Watson also features two classic "unrecorded adventures"--pastiche tales by a master of the form. This new edition includes an introduction by the President of the Sherlock Holmes Society of London, reflecting on the book's importance as a classic work of Holmesiana.
A Commentary on Horace's Epodes

A Commentary on Horace's Epodes

Lindsay C. Watson

Oxford University Press
2003
sidottu
This is by far the most detailed commentary yet on Horace's Epodes. The line-by-line commentary on each epode is prefaced by a substantial interpretative essay which offers a reading of that poem and synthesises existing scholarship. These essays, the first of their kind, will provide essential critical orientation to undergraduates approaching the Epode-book for the first time. Moreover, the scale and density of the commentary will make it an invaluable resource for scholars of Latin poetry. A particular feature is the first in-depth treatment of the two lengthy magical Epodes 5 and 17. The author draws extensively on ancient magical texts preserved on papyrus and lead, as well as the recent flood of publications on Greek and Roman magic, to cast light on countless details in these epodes which reveal a marked familiarity on Horace's part with authentic magical belief and practice.

The Goldilocks Map: A classroom teacher's quest to evaluate 'brain-based' teaching advice
In the last 20 years, the cognitive sciences have revealed fresh, surprising, and useful insights into how and why our students learn. Teachers can now draw on psychology and neuroscience research to supplement, reconsider, even overturn our traditions and training. To use this research most wisely, teachers must find our way to an elusive Goldilocks Zone.Instead of resisting all research-based guidance, we should be ready to take it to heart – even when it challenges both our training and conventional wisdom. Instead of accepting all research-based guidance, we should be ready to reject it emphatically – especially the hyped-up edu-fads that exaggerate and misinterpret psychology findings. How can we get this Goldilocks balance “just right”? This book offers a specific, practical quest map to discover just such a balance. By critically examining the source, the research, and ourselves, teachers can develop the skills necessary to be effective research skeptics.Written by a teacher with 18 years in the classroom – and 13 years studying neuroscience and psychology – The Goldilocks Map transforms brain research from a daunting monologue into an approachable, exciting, and lively conversation.

Emotion-Focused Therapy for Generalized Anxiety

Emotion-Focused Therapy for Generalized Anxiety

Jeanne C. Watson; Leslie S. Greenberg

American Psychological Association
2017
sidottu
Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)--characterized by near-constant worry that often coincides with intense feelings of shame and despair--is a highly treatment-resistant disorder, with clients often relapsing after making some progress. Master therapists Jeanne C. Watson and Leslie S. Greenberg argue, however, that emotion-focused therapy (EFT) is uniquely capable of targeting the maladaptive emotional schemes that underlie GAD and helping clients maintain lasting, positive change. In this practical guide, Watson and Greenberg teach mental health practitioners how to employ EFT methods in their work with GAD clients. The authors first review EFT amp rsquo s conceptualization of GAD, emphasizing the key role that emotion plays in pervasive anxiety. They then translate those foundational principles into detailed techniques and strategies as they walk readers through the EFT process, beginning with the establishment of a healing therapeutic relationship. Chapters review different stages of EFT, describing specific therapeutic exercises, such as empty-chair and two-chair tasks, that allow clients to vocalize and directly address their deep-rooted emotional pain, anxieties, and relational injuries with significant others. Through this work, clients eventually learn to self-soothe and transform their maladaptive coping mechanisms into healthier ones. Sample client-therapist dialogues demonstrate how these EFT techniques can be applied in actual practice.
Progressivism

Progressivism

Bradley C. S. Watson; Charles R. Kesler

University of Notre Dame Press
2020
sidottu
At its core this book is intellectual history, tracing the work of progressive historians as they in turn wrote the history of progressivism. In Progressivism: The Strange History of a Radical Idea, Bradley C. S. Watson presents an intellectual history of American progressivism as a philosophical-political phenomenon, focusing on how and with what consequences the academic discipline of history came to accept and propagate it. This book offers a meticulously detailed historiography and critique of the insularity and biases of academic culture. It shows how the first scholarly interpreters of progressivism were, in large measure, also its intellectual architects, and later interpreters were in deep sympathy with their premises and conclusions. Too many scholarly treatments of the progressive synthesis were products of it, or at least were insufficiently mindful of two central facts: the hostility of progressive theory to the Founders' Constitution and the tension between progressive theory and the realm of the private, including even conscience itself. The constitutional and religious dimensions of progressive thought—and, in particular, the relationship between the two—remained hidden for much of the twentieth century. This pathbreaking volume reveals how and why this scholarly obfuscation occurred. The book will interest students and scholars of American political thought, the Progressive Era, and historiography, and it will be a useful reference work for anyone in history, law, and political science.
