A taut story of hidden violence and self-deception from "an Indian Chekhov" (Suketu Mehta)An upper-middle class couple in Bangalore, Venkat and Viji, find their quiet life upended--and the flaws in their marriage exposed--when two strange young men come knocking at their door in the middle of the night, claiming to have business with their daughter, Rekha, a college senior who happens to be visiting relatives in the countryside. Venkat--a narrator whose account of his marriage, and of the lives of his wife and daughter, we soon learn to doubt--sends the boys away, but they come back the next day, and now they're not alone. While Venkat begins to fear for his daughter's safety, he is haunted by the memory of a betrayal and disappearance from long ago. As his guilt-ridden imagination leaps between knowing and unknowing, evasion and confrontation, Shanbhag reveals not just the tensions in a marriage or a family, but also the polarization of Indian politics and the resurgence of the Hindu right.Precise, enigmatic, and suspenseful, Sakina's Kiss fulfills the promise of Vivek Shanbhag's lauded debut, Ghachar Ghochar, which Parul Sehgal called "A great Indian novel...elegant, lean, balletic" (The New York Times).

This definitive monograph celebrates the stunning work of an esteemed Japanese photographer known for her intimate and atmospheric black-and-white portraits. Sakiko Nomura’s images explore themes of sensuality, identity, and solitude with striking emotional depth. A protégé of Nobuyoshi Araki, she captures the human form in raw, vulnerable states, focusing on the interplay of light and shadow to evoke stillness, introspection, and desire. Her subjects, often youthful and alluring, reveal the power and tension of erotic desire with remarkable tenderness. As a woman photographing both male and female nudes, Nomura’s work challenges traditional Japanese stereotypes, offering a fresh perspective on intimacy and the human experience. This book features a rich selection of Nomura’s most evocative work, showcasing her fluid, rhythmic brushstrokes of light and shadow. Her compositions blur the line between subtle eroticism and contemplative beauty, capturing personal moments that resonate universally. Elegant and alluring, this monograph is an essential addition for admirers of Japanese photography, women photographers, and contemporary erotic art, and offers a compelling invitation to explore the forces of desire, vulnerability, and human connection through the lens of one of Japan’s most captivating contemporary photographers.
Here is a thorough critical re-examination of the Edwardian master of the darkly humorous short story, Saki (the pen name of Hector Hugh Munro, 1870-1916). Saki the satirist constantly rebelled against but depended upon the world of H.H. Munro, the gentleman bachelor. In reassessing the importance of post-Wilde sexuality, anti-suffragist feelings, and attitudes towards Jews and Slavs in Saki's oeuvre, it becomes clear that the fiction of Saki reflects a fervid imperial masculinity in Britain as World War I approached. The tension between rebellious sexual politics and pro-patriarchy, nationalist views in Saki's fiction reflects a time when the old, manly, bourgeois traditions of coming home from work to "the angel of the hearth" and defending King and Country abroad increasingly clashed with new sexual identities, women's agitation for the vote, and the growing presence of non-British Others in the public imagination.
