I Have Walked One Mile After Dark in a Hard Rain
In this work, Midwest History Project amplifies the true story of an American family who arrives in Wisconsin in 1848 with their enslaver. Charles and Caroline Shepard are young adults when they cross the American wilderness in covered wagons and assume their sovereignty. The land they come to has just been taken from Ho Chunk, Osakiwug and Meskwaki nations; in 1804, the Americans secure 50 million acres of Indigenous Land - Wisconsin territory - for $2,234.50 plus $1,000/year every year thereafter. While persecution and displacement of the Indigenous Peoples is a movement of loss and retreat, the land offers possibility for families like the Shepards who escape slavery's bondage and gain a foothold in the young American economy. Remarkably, a collection of Shepard family letters have been preserved by a Wisconsin university. Illuminating these letters, Midwest History Project centers the Shepard correspondence in their own words and within a fusion of American experience, including slavery's system. The experience of enslavement is entwined with the experience of the enslaver. In American history, the slaver narrative is frequently misrepresented or erased. In this work, Midwest History Project, uncovers misinformation about the slaver who owns the Shepards and produces first-hand accounts from people who knew him. These accounts beg the question; why did Wisconsin re-write the history of the slaver? And, fundamentally, who is afraid to know the truth of American slavery or the persecution of Indigenous People and why has it been rewritten? I Have Walked One Mile After Dark in a Hard Rain concentrates the Shepard experience across a landscape of generations and American intersections. Threads of influence occurring in the 1700's directly impact these Americans who find themselves crossing young states and new territories. The lives of these people affect our present day. Events and decisions from 1830-1870 create this American inheritance. A question remains for us today - how will we remember our uncelebrated American ancestors and will we truthfully preserve their memory for future generations?

The bitter struggle of the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, against the Turkish state has delivered inspirational but often tragic stories. This memoir by Kurdish revolutionary Sakine Cansiz is one of them. Sakine, whose code name was 'Sara', co-founded the PKK in 1974 and dedicated her life to its cause. On the 9 January 2013 she was assassinated in Paris in circumstances that remain officially unresolved. This is the first chapter of her iconic life, leading up to her arrest in 1979, penned as dramatic events unfolded against the backdrop of the Turkish revolutionary left. She writes about the excitement of entering the movement as a young woman, discovering she would have to challenge traditional gender roles as she rose amongst its ranks. She was one of the first to demand the recruitment and education of female revolutionaries, and demanded total gender equality within the PKK, which is now one of its central tenets. Today, 'Sara' is an inspiration to women fighting for liberation across the world. This is her story in her own words, and is in turns shocking, violent and path-breaking. Translated by Janet Biehl.

The second instalment in a gripping memoir by Sakine Cansiz (codenamed 'Sara') chronicles the Kurdish revolutionary's harrowing years in a Turkish prison, following her arrest in 1979 at the age of 21. Jailed for more than a decade for her activities as a founder and leader of the Kurdish freedom movement, she faced brutal conditions and was subjected to interrogation and torture. Remarkably, the story she tells here is foremost one of resistance, with courageous episodes of collective struggle behind bars including hunger strikes and attempts at escape. Along the way she also presents vivid portraits of her fellow prisoners and militants, a snapshot of the Turkish left in the 1980s, a scathing indictment of Turkey's war on Kurdish people - and even an unlikely love story. The first prison memoir by a Kurdish woman to be published in English, this is an extraordinary document of an extraordinary life. Translated by Janet Biehl.
