A Kirkus Reviews Best Teen Book of 2014 In Dirty Wings by Sarah McCarry, Maia is a teenage piano prodigy and dutiful daughter, imprisoned in the oppressive silence of her adoptive parents' house like a princess in an ivory tower. Cass is a street rat, witch, and runaway, scraping by with her wits and her knack for a five-fingered discount. When a chance encounter brings the two girls together, an unlikely friendship blossoms that will soon change the course of both their lives. Cass springs Maia from the jail of the only world she's ever known, and Maia's only too happy to make a break for it. But Cass didn't reckon on Jason, the hypnotic blue-eyed rocker who'd capture Maia's heart as soon as Cass set her free--and Cass isn't the only one who's noticed Maia's extraordinary gifts. Is Cass strong enough to battle the ancient evil she's unwittingly awakened--or has she walked into a trap that will destroy everything she cares about? In this time, like in any time, love is a dangerous game.

Eighteen-year-old Tally is absolutely sure of everything: her genius, the love of her adoptive family, the loyalty of her best friend, Shane, and her future career as a Nobel prize-winning astronomer. There's no room in her tidy world for heartbreak or uncertainty--or the charismatic, troubled mother who abandoned her soon after she was born. But when a sudden discovery upends her fiercely ordered world, Tally sets out on an unexpected quest to seek out the reclusive musician who may hold the key to her past--and instead finds Maddy, an enigmatic and beautiful girl who will unlock the door to her future. The deeper she falls in love with Maddy, the more Tally begins to realize that the universe is bigger--and more complicated--than she ever imagined. Can Tally face the truth about her family--and find her way home in time to save herself from its consequences? About a Girl is the powerful and entrancing conclusion to Sarah McCarry's Metamorphoses trilogy.

A war is igniting... An otherworldly lover of plants must make a choice between her destiny and her deadly fire mage brother. Kel builds her own safety after being abandoned in the woods at the age of six. Out of catastrophe and her own empathetic nature comes a gentle but unstoppable power, a deep connection to the natural world. Now all she wants is to stay in her cozy home with her plants and the animals she's befriended. An ancient conflict threatens to divide them... But the brother who shattered their family with a power he couldn't control needs her help. A war is igniting between the last of the mages and the people their forebears cruelly suppressed. Kel must choose between the brother she loves despite what he's done and the destiny calling to her in the forest. A new family. The other half of her lineage, long dormant, drawing her to them for a purpose she can't yet fathom. An enigmatic shapeshifter warns her from this other family, though, and will fight to keep her from them. Kel's love and innocence, which saved her once, and her deep yearning for the family she lost, now threaten to destroy her. Venture into the forest, hole up in a cottage while the rain thunders down outside, and curl up by the fire with Shadows of Magic, a dark, richly imagined adventure that explores the complexities of power and the strength and limits of love in a world where everyone has their own agenda. This epic fantasy adventure contains depictions of violence, infrequent profanity, and romantic relationships without graphic depictions (zero spice).
Blue Butterfly: Inside the Diary of an Epstein Survivor
In the world's collective memory, Jeffrey Epstein is a disgraced financier, a serial sex trafficker, and a man whose crimes shocked the world. Blue Butterfly dismantles the illusion that Epstein was a lone predator. Instead, it exposes a far darker reality-- one deliberately hidden from public view. At the heart of this expos is K----, a survivor whose story is captured in a pink diary with a blue butterfly on the cover. In 2002, when she was twenty years old, she was recruited by Epstein while touring Africa with a high-profile entourage that included Bill Clinton, Kevin Spacey, and Chris Tucker. After attending a staged casting, she was lured into the predator's web with the false promise of a Victoria's Secret modeling contract. Once extracted from her home country and severed from her family, she was immediately abducted and abused: she was given short notice to pack for the Caribbean, her name was conspicuously absent from the flight logs, and no one knew she was traveling to Epstein's private island. To this day, she remains convinced that, had she failed to comply, she would never have lived to tell her story.

Educators will find in this book an opportunity to examine the multiple, dynamic identities of the students they instruct and to consider the ways in which all teachers and students are shaped by their social and cultural settings. The volume is the first to examine theories of identity and elementary literacy practices by presenting data in a teacher-friendly format. The chapters highlight the influences of school and, to some extent, home contexts on students' identities as readers and writers, and give numerous implications for practice. McCarthey collected data from three sites in which teachers implemented writing workshop and literature-based instruction in grades 3-6. This book focuses on the students in these sites, who were from diverse cultural and social backgrounds. By providing information about the contexts in which students read and wrote, McCarthey demonstrates the power of the teacher-student relationship, the importance of the classroom curriculum, and the influence of parents and peers on students. For much of the 19th and 20th centuries, Melbourne’s Little Lonsdale Street – locally known as ‘Little Lon’ – was notorious as a foul slum and brothel district, occupied by the itinerant and the criminal. The stereotype of ‘slumdom’ defined ‘Little Lon’ in the minds of Melbournians, and became entrenched in Australian literature and popular culture. The Commonwealth Block, Melbourne tells a different story. This groundbreaking book reports on almost three decades of excavations conducted on the Commonwealth Block – the area of central Melbourne bordered by Little Lonsdale, Lonsdale, Exhibition and Spring streets. Since the 1980s, archaeologists and historians have pieced together the rich and complex history of this area, revealing a working-class and immigrant community that was much more than just a slum. The Commonwealth Block, Melbourne delves into the complex social, cultural and economic history of this forgotten community.

This book appears at a time when the crisis rhetoric about schools, teaching, and learning to read is extremely high. There is a rising call within the profession for a balanced perspective on reading. Balancing Principles for Teaching Elementary Reading aspires to help set the agenda for improving the quality of literacy instruction in the United States--by recentering the debate from "What's better, 'whole language' or 'phonics'?" to "What can we do in reading instruction to prepare all children for the literacy demands of the next century?" The authors, all members of the professional community of reading educators, work on a daily basis with teachers in classrooms, prospective teachers, clinicians, and tutors. Their goal for this book is to represent what they have learned about effective teaching and learning as members of this community. It is written with four purposes in mind: * to offer a principled conception of reading and learning to read that is considerate of both the personal dimensions of literacy acquisition as well as the changes that are taking place in society, * to summarize key findings from the research that relate specifically to effective teaching practices, * to describe current practices in reading instruction with specific comparisons to the principles of effective practice that are identified, and * to suggest an action agenda that is school-based and designed to promote positive changes in the quality of instruction. This text offers a perspective for teaching that provokes members of the reading education community to think about their underlying beliefs about teaching and their shared commitment to making schools more effective for the students they serve. It is envisioned as a resource to be used in building a community of learners--to be read with professional colleagues in a course of study, in a teacher-researcher book club, or in some type of in-service setting. Readers are encouraged to debate the ideas presented, to challenge the authors' conceptions with their own reality, to make sense within a community about what action is desirable. Some specific suggestions and strategies are provided as springboards for further exploration and action.
