The film 'Scott of the Antarctic' was produced by Ealing Studios and released in 1948. It recounts Robert Falcon Scott's ill-fated second expedition to the Antarctic in 1910-1913. The film is well-known for its score, composed by Vaughan Williams, which was later reworked to create his Sinfonia Antartica. Vaughan Williams's original score for the film was heavily edited in the studio and halved in length in order to create the final edit. It is now presented in its full, unedited form, assembled by the conductor Martin Yates, allowing listeners to hear the full grandeur of the composer's original for the first time. A recording of the work is available on the Dutton Epoch record label.

Four artists who are today relatively or almost entirely unknown – one woman and three men – nevertheless played a part in the aesthetic upheavals that led to abstraction in 1940s Montreal. Very active in the art milieu throughout the decade, Marian Dale Scott, Fritz Brandtner, Henry Eveleigh, and Gordon Webber captured the attention of critics of the time, who employed the term “abstract art” to describe both non-objective works and bold formal explorations that retained some reference to visible reality. An examination of these artists’ practices reveals a remarkable openness to international contemporary art trends – French, German, British, and American. Their work and its critical reception conjure a complex picture of the debates on abstraction that took place in Montreal during the 1940s, so often reduced to the controversies surrounding the emergence of the Automatiste movement. The artistic innovations of Paul-Émile Borduas and his group and the radical tone of their 1948 manifesto Refus global cemented their status as Quebec’s abstract avant-garde but also had the effect of eclipsing other visions of abstraction being explored during the same period. This book reinstates the oeuvres of these forgotten protagonists in the narrative of abstract art, illustrating how their practices encompassed a variety of themes: emotion, science, human experience in the broadest sense – but also, as the Second World War unfolded, the violence that marked their era.

An unprecedented glimpse into the working methods and the complicated legacy of an important twentieth-century artist Over the course of his more than three-decade career, Scott Burton (1939–1989) made groundbreaking contributions to sculpture, performance, public art, queer art, and criticism. Responding to what he identified as a gap between art and its potential audiences, Burton became a tireless advocate for accessible and popular artworks that everyday people could use and enjoy. In keeping with this principle, he also designed performances and “sculpture furniture” to explore and orchestrate social dynamics; he was particularly interested in intimacy, distance, collectivity, and isolation. Scott Burton: Shape Shift provides a comprehensive overview of the artist’s biography and career with texts focusing on his public artworks, performance, and innovative use of materials. Featuring more than forty full-page images of Burton’s sculpture, which is rarely published, the book also includes numerous never-before-seen images of notes, photographs, and drawings from the artist’s extensive personal archive, housed at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Scores and photographic documentation of newly commissioned performances on the occasion of the accompanying exhibition are also included. This book has two main related purposes. The first is to provide a fresh and thoroughly documented study of elements of the background to Scott's life and art that have often been overlooked or taken for granted: his politics and his relation to the major intellectual currents of the age and to the Scottish social background. From this study, Scott emerges as a more understandable and less trivial politician and observer of his contemporary scene, both privately and in public. The second part of the book uses this background to sketch an artistic development in the novels. Dr McMaster shows how Scott's deepening response to what he saw as an ever more troubled world led him from the strict realism of his early works to a mature synthesis of realistic, poetic and symbolic modes.

Scott's Waverley (1814), set in and around the Jacobite Rising in the Scotland of 1745–6, was the first historical novel in world literature. Innovative and humane in its plot, rich in social detail, and truly international in popularity, it not only launched a genre, but also became a landmark in literary realism, in historiography and in bookselling. In this study, Richard Humphrey traces and accounts for the text's impact on historical fiction and shows its originality in tackling the manifold issues of rebellion and warfare, separatism and union, prejudice and cultural tolerance. He sets Waverley in its social and literary context, provides detailed analysis of key portions of the text, and offers guidance on further reading.
