Shakespeare's Noise

Shakespeare's Noise

Kenneth Gross

University of Chicago Press
2001
nidottu
Kenneth Gross explores Shakespeare's deep fascination with dangerous and disorderly forms of speaking--especially rumor, slander, insult, vituperation, and curse--and through them offers a vision of the work of words in his plays. Coriolanus's taunts or Lear's curses force us to think not just about how Shakespeare's characters speak, but also about how they hear, overhear, and mishear what is spoken, how rumor becomes tragic knowledge for Hamlet, or opens Othello to fantastic jealousies. Gross also shows how Shakespeare's preoccupation with "noisy" speech echoed and transformed a broader cultural obsession with the perils of rumor, slander, and libel in Renaissance England.

Shakespeare's Neighbors

Shakespeare's Neighbors

Rocco Coronato

University Press of America
2001
sidottu
Shakespeare's Neighbors focuses on what lay next door to Shakespeare- the theoretical context that, while partially lost on us, was quite likely to inform the perception that Shakespeare's contemporaries (his "neighbors") had of his works. In this series of alternative readings, the primacy of the literary text is set against the backdrop of unexpected or largely ignored theories whose enormous diffusion renders them inescapable terms of comparison. Rocco Coronato advocates the likely as a viable backdrop to literary analysis. The inference has it that the presence of such widely disseminated theories may allow for the study of the literary works through their own codes and imagery, without implying a rigidly ideological transmission between social and literary domains. While written with literary criticism in mind, Coronato manages to avoid convoluted jargon, striving in the process to translate the terms of otherwise esoteric discourses into a generally accessible language form, for the benefit of a non-specialist audience as well.

Shakespeare's Non-Standard English

Shakespeare's Non-Standard English

Norman Blake

Continuum International Publishing Group Ltd.
2006
nidottu
Most scholarly attention on Shakespeare's vocabulary has been directed towards his enrichment of the language through borrowing words from other languages, and has thus concentrated on the more learned aspects of his vocabulary. However, the bulk of Shakespeare's output consists of plays, and to make these appear lifelike he needed to employ a collquial and informal style. This aspect of his work has been largely disregarded apart from his bawdy language. This dictionary includes all types of non-standard and informal language and lists all examples found in Shakespeare's works. These include dialect form, colloquial forms, non-standard and variant forms, fashionable words and puns. Norman Blake is Emeritus Professor of English at Sheffield University.
Shakespeare and Nonhuman Intelligence

Shakespeare and Nonhuman Intelligence

Heather Warren-Crow

Cambridge University Press

The Infinite Monkey Theorem is an idea frequently encountered in mass market science books, discourse on Intelligent Design, and debates on the merits of writing produced by chatbots. According to the Theorem, an infinite number of typing monkeys will eventually generate the works of Shakespeare. Shakespeare and Nonhuman Intelligence is a metaphysical analysis of the Bard's function in the Theorem in various contexts over the past century. Beginning with early-twentieth century astrophysics and ending with twenty-first century AI, it traces the emergence of Shakespeare as the embattled figure of writing in the age of machine learning, bioinformatics, and other alleged crimes against the human organism. In an argument that pays close attention to computer programs that instantiate the Theorem, including one by biologist Richard Dawkins, and to references in publications on Intelligent Design, it contends that Shakespeare performs as an interface between the human and our Others: animal, god, machine.

Shakespeare and Neurodiversity argues that the Shakespeare classroom should be a place where neurodivergent learners flourish. This Element addresses four key areas: questions of reasonable adjustments, the pace of learning, the issue of diagnosis, and Shakespearean neurodivergent futures in education. Throughout, the Element provides activities and theoretical explanations to enable students and educators to understand how these four areas of Shakespeare education have often been underpinned by ableism, but can now become sources of neurodivergent flourishing.

Shakespeare and National Identity

Shakespeare and National Identity

Christopher Ivic

The Arden Shakespeare
2017
sidottu
The Arden Shakespeare Dictionary on Shakespeare and National Identity makes a timely and valuable contribution to the discipline. National identity in the early modern period is a central topic of scholarly investigation; it is also a dominant topic in classroom instruction and discussion. More than any other early modern playwright, Shakespeare (especially his history plays) is at the heart of recent critical investigations into a host of relevant topics: borders, history, identity, land, memory, nation, place and space. This Dictionary works through Shakespeare's plays and the cultural moment in which they were produced to provide a rich and informative account of such topics. An ideal reference work for upper level students and scholars and an essential resource for any literary library.

Over the past three decades, no critical movement has been more prominent in Shakespeare Studies than new historicism. And yet, it remains notoriously difficult to pin down, define and explain, let alone analyze. Shakespeare and New Historicist Theory provides a comprehensive scholarly analysis of new historicism as a development in Shakespeare studies while asking fundamental questions about its status as literary theory and its continued usefulness as a method of approaching Shakespeare’s plays.

Shakespeare with Noodles is a program designed to be young people's first introduction to Shakespeare. Costumes and prop pieces are constructed from swimming noodles. Utilizing melodrama and slap stick comedy, our shows are fast paced. All titles in the series have a playing time of under 60 minutes. As much as possible we have utilized capitalization and punctuation to reflect line breaks from the full text. Our scripts are also tailored to incorporate girls into traditionally male roles. Should you prefer to present a more traditional approach, our scripts easily accommodate this. Shakespeare's Henry IV is a monarch plagued by a kingdom and eldest son in rebellion. Young Prince Hal is reluctant to step out of the tavern and onto the throne. Through him we meet Falstaff, described as, "a globe of sinful continents," he remains one of Shakespeare's best loved characters. With a 50 minute playing time, pair it with our Henry IV and 3/4's for one full length production.

Shakespeare with Noodles is a program designed to be young people's first introduction to Shakespeare. Costumes and prop pieces are constructed from swimming noodles. Utilizing melodrama and slap stick comedy, our shows are fast paced. The Tragedy of King Lear has been broken into two plays. King Lear: Part 1 and King Lear's Backside. Part 1 has a playing time of one hour, King Lear's Backside is 50 minutes. With its beautifully interwoven plots of familial discord, the story of Lear is worth devoting two seasons to. The Fool's epilogue in Part 1, creates a transition between the two plays. Should you choose to perform the two plays together as one full production, omit the epilogue. The script has been edited with performance continuity in mind. Lines sometimes are distributed to characters who do not say them in the original. As much as possible, capitalization and punctuation reflect line breaks from the full script although the text has been condensed into paragraphs to save space. Our scripts are also tailored to incorporate girls into traditionally male roles. The genders used reflect the actors who played them in our production. Should you prefer to present a more traditional approach, this series easily accommodates this. In Part 1, King Lear decides to split his kingdom between his three daughters according to which one loves him best. When the youngest of the three refuses to play her father's game she is exiled and Lear will find himself abandoned and out in the cold. Family discord spreads and engulf the Earl of Gloucester, who will be blinded for taking Lear in.
