"This is not the army, William. These men have choices. They can leave or refuse to go in the pits if it's too dangerous. They have to make decisions for themselves." Fire flashed in her eyes. "You aren't responsible for them.""Sheep do a lot of dumb things, Eileen. You know they do." He looked her full in the face. "They ought to know not to cross that wall by the river, but every time they get the chance, over they go. Then they get bloated from the grass and end up cast on the hillside." He put her hand to his face. "All these men see is the paycheck that feeds them green grass. I'm their shepherd checking the fences."Two shepherds, thousands of years apart, face the same dilemma: what to do when what's wrong is right and what's right is wrong. Amos calls across the hill country of ancient Israel. He finds war refugees on his doorstep. Amos must decide if he will stand up for them or ignore the problems like so many others.William lifts his voice among the hills of Wales. He hides among the sheep trying to forget the pain of WW1, but when financial distress sends him to work in the Welsh coalfields, will he defend the miners or remain quiet? An ancient song weaves through time culminating in a chorus of voices that soar above the rest.

Mikhail Zoshchenko was a household name in the Soviet Union from the 1920s until the crackdown on the arts after World War II. This is a full-length study in English of his career, and of his critical and political reception in a society where the purpose of art was service to the state. It places his longer works and the events leading up to his literary assassination in 1946 in the context of the short, riotous works that won him mass readership and a devoted following among contemporary writers who agreed with each other on little else. Dr Scatton identifies stylistic and thematic unities in his prose, and argues that Zoshchenko's later works were natural outgrowths of his earlier experiments and not, as is often stated, aberrations or expressions of subservience to the regime. Both as a master of Russian prose and a victim of Stalinist literary politics, Zoshchenko has been the object of critical rediscovery and reassessment over the last 15 years. This book describes that process.

"I want to cover you from crown to sole". These were the liquid thoughts she hoped her laced panties would catch as she gazed at his supple, dark, erect... If only he knew how many times she fantasized having him in a compromising position. Shame on her for reminscing about the time he had his..... He dreamed of her often. Told himself he was too grown to get this wet Over a dream or was it reality. His "Legend" could'nt tell the difference as it stood at attention from the meer sight of her. During the board meeting earlier that morning He saw her gazing for long periods of time readjusting herself periodically finding bottom lip trapped between her teeth. He could recall that look. He reminisced often about that day he had her for lunch. Trying to maintain reality and day dream without licking his fingers....
This is dedicated to the loves of my life. Words can not explain the depth in which I have learned to love. But I tried.
Human societies are complex adaptive systems, the nature of which has important ramifications for the way in which countries organize themselves politically and arrange themselves economically. In Doomed To Fail Paul Shotton explains why liberal democracy is the least-bad political framework, and why every other political system will inevitably lead to war. Likewise, capitalism, which emerged naturally from the industrial revolution, is the least bad way for a polity to organize economically.Every attempt to improve upon or replace capitalism, however well intentioned, has led to economic disaster. That democracy and capitalism are symbiotic and aligned with the best interests of humanity stems from an underlying mechanism they share with the development of life on earth itself.Shotton then zooms-in on central banks to discuss the role they played in causing the Global Financial Crisis and, by virtue of their response to it, made the fallout much worse. As a result of their incompetence and arrogance, our political and economic elite risk the destruction of democracy and capitalism, which have been the source of all human progress since the dawn of humanity. He calls for renewed invigoration of the principles upon which America was founded if disaster for humanity is to be averted.

A love story told in the form of an auction catalog. Auction catalogs can tell you a lot about a person -- their passions and vanities, peccadilloes and aesthetics; their flush years and lean. Think of the collections of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Truman Capote, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. In Leanne Shapton's marvelously inventive and invented auction catalog, the 325 lots up for auction are what remain from the relationship between Lenore Doolan and Harold Morris (who aren't real people, but might as well be). Through photographs of the couple's personal effects -- the usual auction items (jewelry, fine art, and rare furniture) and the seemingly worthless (pajamas, Post-it notes, worn paperbacks) -- the story of a failed love affair vividly (and cleverly) emerges. From first meeting to final separation, the progress and rituals of intimacy are revealed through the couple's accumulated relics and memorabilia. And a love story, in all its tenderness and struggle, emerges from the evidence that has been left behind, laid out for us to appraise and appreciate. In an earlier work, Was She Pretty?, Shapton, a talented artist and illustrator, subtly explored the seemingly simple yet powerfully complicated nature of sexual jealousy. In Important Artifacts and Personal Property from the Collection of Lenore Doolan and Harold Morris--a very different yet equally original book--she invites us to contemplate what is truly valuable, and to consider the art we make of our private lives.
"Reading Guestbook] feels akin to walking through an art exhibit, each piece linked in ways that are ineffable but clear. . . yearning, like a ghost, lingers long after the stories are done." --NPROne of our most imaginative writers and artists explores the visitations that haunt us in the midst of life, and reinvents the very way we narrate experience. A tennis prodigy collapses after his wins, crediting them to an invisible, not entirely benevolent presence. A series of ghosts appear at their former bedsides, some distraught, some fascinated, to witness their unfamiliar occupants. A woman returns from a visit to Alcatraz with an uncomfortable feeling. The spirit of a prisoner has attached himself to you, a friend tells her. He sensed the sympathy you had for those men. In more than two dozen stories and vignettes, accompanied by an evocative curiosity cabinet of artifacts and images, Guestbook beckons us through the glimmering, unsettling evidence that marks our paths in life.
A comprehensive survey of contemporary approaches to understanding dreams. If you can have only one book on dreams, this is the one to have.Dream Reader is a uniquely comprehensive survey of contemporary approaches to understanding and working with dreams. The general reader interested in exploring the world of dreams could not obtain a better introduction and grounding than from this book. Academic psychologists, therapists, and professional dreamworkers alike will find it to be an incomparable survey and sampling of the growing literature on dreaming. In Part I, Shafton summarizes sleep laboratory discoveries, then considers theories about dream generation and meaning that have arisen from these discoveries. Part II discusses major Euro-American schools of dream interpretation in the twentieth century: Freud, Jung, Existential, Cultural, and Gestalt. Also included are chapters dealing with various topics of interest: the dream styles of people of both genders, and of people with certain psychiatric diagnoses; non-interpretive approaches to dreamwork; dream incubation; lucid dreaming; dream re-entry; dreams of the blind; post-traumatic nightmares; and many more. Dream Reader provides an integrated review of the whole literature of dream psychology-the clinical, academic, and also the serious popular literature. It also presents sizeable extracts from the original sources for the reader's own critical evaluation.
