For people of African descent, music constitutes a unique domain of expression. From traditional West African drumming to South African kwaito, from spirituals to hip-hop, Black life and history has been dynamically displayed and contested through sound. Shana Redmond excavates the sonic histories of these communities through a genre emblematic of Black solidarity and citizenship: anthems. An interdisciplinary cultural history, Anthem reveals how this "sound franchise" contributed to the growth and mobilization of the modern, Black citizen. Providing new political frames and aesthetic articulations for protest organizations and activist-musicians, Redmond reveals the anthem as a crucial musical form following World War I. Beginning with the premise that an analysis of the composition, performance, and uses of Black anthems allows for a more complex reading of racial and political formations within the twentieth century, Redmond expands our understanding of how and why diaspora was a formative conceptual and political framework of modern Black identity. By tracing key compositions and performances around the world—from James Weldon Johnson's "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing" that mobilized the NAACP to Nina Simone's "To Be Young, Gifted & Black" which became the Black National Anthem of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE)—Anthem develops a robust recording of Black social movements in the twentieth century that will forever alter the way you hear race and nation.

At once a powerful story of a daughter's literal and figurative search for her father and an indictment of the mental health system with legacies to this day, Missing Father will touch readers searching to make sense of the complexities of love, family and self-understanding. Filled with searing memories and beautiful, poetic writing, it captures the extraordinary character of a bipolar parent as seen through the eyes of a bewildered little girl who grows up to become a family therapist with children of her own. While it is memoir, it reads like first-rate literature in a vein with classics such as A Beautiful Mind and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Missing Father cuts through the layers of shame, alienation, and ups and downs of life in a family navigating through mental illness and will resonate with those who have tried to reach an inaccessible loved one."Missing Father...is beautifully rendered and filled with tenderness and compassion and clarity.... This Element considers recent changes to the long-standing pattern in US politics that women are less politically active than men. On one hand, the gender gap in political activity beyond voting has disappeared. On the other, the disparity remains when it comes to political money. What is the explanation? The Element begins with politics – both the long-term increase in women occupying political positions and the way that trends/events like MeToo, the defeat of Hillary Clinton, and Donald Trump's performative masculinity made gender salient. It then turns to social structural changes, examining in particular women's relative gains in income and, especially, education. Paying consistent attention to intersectional differences among men and among women, whether based on political party, race, or ethnicity, the authors find the explanation of these trends to be rooted not in politics, but rather in social structure. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

In this new edition, authors Shapiro and Carlson draw from Eastern wisdom and practices as well as Western psychological theory and science to explore why mindful awareness is integral to the therapeutic healing process and to show clinicians how to connect with this deeper awareness. Intention is fundamental to any project, endeavor, or journey. Related to intention is the concept of mindfulness - the awareness that arises through intentionally attending to oneself and others in an open, caring, and nonjudgmental way. Authors Shapiro and Carlson draw from Eastern wisdom and practices as well as Western psychological theory and science to explore why mindful awareness is integral to the therapeutic healing process and to show clinicians how to connect with this deeper awareness. This second edition is an accessible discussion of the fundamentals and also contains new sections describing the latest research on the neuroscience of mindfulness and mechanisms of change. Integrating the art and science of mindfulness to inspire greater well-being in both clinicians and their patients, this volume bridges a gap between therapist and patient, reminding us that we are all human beings wanting health, happiness, and freedom from suffering.

Now in its third edition, The Art and Science of Mindfulness offers a deeper understanding of the concept of mindfulness and explores its potential as a core clinical skill and a way to increase the well-being of both clients and clinicians. This book is written for anyone in the helping profession that may be looking for a great resource to better understand mindfulness practices. The three authors are very credible in their fields of study with decades of experience and published peer reviewed articles between them. The book is broken down into sections which include the basics of the effectiveness of mindfulness, different areas of mindfulness, and the future of mindfulness research. -Doody's Review Service Mindfulness helps us to see clearly so that we can make choices grounded in reality and respond to life with wisdom. However, seeing clearly is difficult because the lens through which we view the world is blurred by our parents, teachers, relationships, and society, and they influence our perceptions on conscious and subconscious levels. Practicing mindfulness helps us remove the filters, biases, and preconceived ideas that shape our perceptions and cloud our consciousness. At the deepest level, mindfulness is about freedom: freedom from reflexive patterns, freedom from reactivity, and, ultimately, freedom from suffering. This book navigates how mindful awareness is fundamental to the therapy process, and shows how mindful practice can help therapists and clients cultivate and connect with this deeper awareness. It also aims to present mindfulness as: an important dimension of clinical training with unique contributions toward fostering attention, empathy, presence, and awareness of our own biases and assumptions an empirically supported clinical intervention effective across a wide range of populations a means of fostering self-reflection and self-care for clinicians a way to expand the profession's focus on pathology to include positive growth and development New to this edition is a comprehensive overview of the evidence supporting the neurochemical basis of intention, attention, and attitude a discussion of implicit bias and how it interferes with connecting mindfully with clients a discussion of new mindfulness-based interventions and ways to apply mindfulness in therapy, and more.
Early 1972, the Roe v. Wade decision is seven months away and an upper middle-class family is about to be slammed into varying degrees of lunacy. Mabel Jamieson, the youngest of four siblings, has an illegal abortion leaving her maimed and unconscious. Though unknown to her at the time, Mabel's older brother, Jasper, followed her the night she went to see a man masquerading as a doctor, and was able to deliver her cataleptic body safely home-only after witnessing the ordeal through a hidden window. Filled with rage and misinterpreted information, Jasper swears to avenge his sister's wrongdoing and spends years sifting his way through seemingly impossible implications until he finds the man responsible.Flash forward to summer 1989, Jasper's eleven-year-old daughter Caroline and her cousin Mitch find a small cross near the home where their fathers, and their Aunt Mabel, grew up; a cross bearing the date March 24, 1972. The children trade theories about its origin and let their discovery saturate their imaginations until a tragic accident devastates Caroline and rips all the joy from her heart. One year later, still devastated and seemingly inconsolable, Caroline begins to come to terms with the loss she endured while her father tries to make peace with the horrors that still haunt his mind, even after all this time. So one evening, while celebrating the Fourth of July holiday, Jasper consumed with his own agenda and little regard for his sister's, is determined to confront her and tell her he knows about the abortion, tell her he knows who the father is, tell her he knows the man who maimed her.The Caretakers is not another story of good vs. evil, but one of devotions vs. obligation and protection vs. abandonment. Crafted from years of collecting real life accounts as well as cherished childhood memories, the author depicts a heartwarming storyline that will tug at your very soul and petition your own beliefs. The narration takes the reader down a nonlinear path with character revelations at every turn. When we first meet Mabel she's a confused and doubtful teenage girl, but before long becomes a young woman who learns to cherish her own worth. Throughout the story, Caroline is a young teen herself, but like Mabel, is forced to face tragedy square in the face at far too young of an age all while her father comes face-to-face with a truth that has haunted him for nearly fifteen years.AUTHOR'S NOTE I first published The Caretakers in May, 2011. And though I was pleased with the overall theme and content, I realized (albeit years later) that the manuscript needed polishing. Admittedly, I rushed to publish-like many first-time authors do-but now, I've gone back, had it edited and hopefully it is free from errors. As for the storyline itself ... it's difficult, I think, for a writer to go back and reexamine their work. It can be a daunting task. Because we all evolve. We change from experiences here and there, and when we look at back at older writing, sometimes we wonder why we didn't say something differently ... end a scene, begin a scene differently. But that doesn't mean we should discard what we created in the past. And so, for the most part, The Caretakers remains as it always has been ... a first novel, with a few revisions for both clarity and flow.I cannot promise that it is a perfect work. Nonetheless, it was imperative to have a clean copy available to readers so I hope you'll consider reading the fourth, revised edition. Thank you.
From his cavernous voice and unparalleled artistry to his fearless struggle for human rights, Paul Robeson was one of the twentieth century's greatest icons and polymaths. In Everything Man Shana L. Redmond traces Robeson's continuing cultural resonances in popular culture and politics. She follows his appearance throughout the twentieth century in the forms of sonic and visual vibration and holography; theater, art, and play; and the physical environment. Redmond thereby creates an imaginative cartography in which Robeson remains present and accountable to all those he inspired and defended. With her bold and unique theorization of antiphonal life, Redmond charts the possibility of continued communication, care, and collectivity with those who are dead but never gone.
