Our first visit to China in 1989 was light-years ago. Tourists were only allowed to tour with a State Guide shepherding you around, shopping was reserved for the "Friendship Stores," and it was strictly forbidden to wander off on your own. Cosmopolitan China today is a revelation and constantly reinventing itself. Houses sell for millions of dollars and magnificent skyscrapers, each architecturally different and unique, put on surreal light shows in the evening. Hyperactive people can happily stay on the go with nonstop action. But there is a lot more to see in China than the Beijing and other gigantic cities inhabited by over 10 million people. There are many small towns that still look like they did in Ming and Qing days, thousands of years ago. Sheila has traveled the length and breadth of China and inside this Guide is what she considers to be the five most beautiful towns and villages, along with the best side trips from each place. Each is located in a different Province. Each is completely unlike the other. And although each is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, you'll find few only a few Western travelers. Do not miss the incredible stilted houses in Fenghuang "Phoenix Town"... picture perfect Hongcun ... the ancient and intact walled town of Pingyao ... everyone's favorite West Lake in Hangzhou...and small Lijiang, filled with streams, narrow canals and the rapidly disappearing Naxi minority culture. There is a reason why producers use these destinations in movies. Let Sheila teach you how to Travel the World on a Budget, share exotic locations with you known only to locals, and most importantly, ease your fears about languages, currencies, personal safety and staying healthy. Vivacious, confident and striking, young Australian Sheila Chisholm met her first husband, Lord Loughborough, in Egypt during the First World War. Arriving in London as a young married woman, she quickly conquered English society, and would spend the next half a century inside the palaces, mansions and clubs of the elite. Her clandestine affair with young Bertie, the future George VI, caused ruptures at Buckingham Palace, with King George offering his son the title Duke of York in exchange for never hearing of Sheila again. She subsequently became Lady Milbanke, one of London's most admired fashion icons and society fundraisers and ended her days as Princess Dimitri of Russia, juggling her royal duties with a successful career as a travel agent. Throughout her remarkable life, Sheila won the hearts of men ranging from Rudolph Valentino and Vincent Astor to Prince Obolensky, and maintained longstanding friendships with Evelyn Waugh, Noël Coward, Idina Sackville and Nancy Mitford.A story unknown to most, Sheila is a spellbinding account of an utterly fascinating woman.
Although born into a poor family, high spirited Sheila is propelled into a tantalising new world of riches and travel after a chance meeting with wealthy Anthony King. A curious turn of events sees her third child Oliver become king and royal bonds strengthened with the old royal houses of Germany and the Netherlands. An interesting tale for young and old.
In 1951 a two year old infant Sheila Jones was diagnosed at Birmingham Children's Hospital (BCH) with a rare condition Phenylketonuria (PKU). There was no treatment but, not accepting this, her distraught mother Mary persevered until she found help from three pioneering doctors at BCH: Dr Horst Bickel, Dr John Gerrard and Dr Evelyn Hickmans. In the hospital laboratory they worked tirelessly to prepare a special formula and Sheila was the first person in the world to receive dietary treatment for PKU. Until now, little has been known about the life of Sheila, and her family in Birmingham, and the hardships and sacrifices they endured. It is a remarkable story of a brave little girl, her brothers, and her courageous and tenacious mother. Sheila's contribution is immense; it led to the introduction of newborn screening and worldwide treatment for PKU. It is a great sadness that Sheila herself was unable to benefit long term but her legacy is a triumph for all those with PKU. This is Sheila's story until her death in Birmingham in 1999 and will be important to people with PKU, their families, health professionals and readers interested in the history of medicine.
