The exhibition catalogue provides an intimate view of the Swiss contemporary artist Silvia Gertsch and her impressive oeuvre. The personal and artistic development of Gertsch, who found her preferred medium in the centuries-old technique of reverse glass painting, is revealed through the eyes of companions of many years. In her paintings, Gertsch examines dichotomies like that of the vibrant city or serene nature and takes a critical look at society. Color and light-dark contrasts fascinate the artist the picture carrier enables her to accentuate light and shadow. Her works show emotions and interpersonal interactions, in a world supersaturated with visual and acoustic effects.

Colour and light as sensory stimulus and the phenomenon of light encountering surfaces are core elements of the work of artists Silvia Gertsch, born in Switzerland in 1963, and the German Xerxes Ach, born in 1957. Gertsch works on reverse-glass, using snapshots of young people in summer, sunbathing, strolling down the street, or children absorbed in play. Ach has turned to micro-phenomena in which light encounters various materials, is refracted in various ways, and generates abstract visual compositions. In spite of their different stylistic languages - realism on the one side, abstract colour field painting on the other - occupying antagonistic positions in contemporary painting, the two artists take a similar approach, starting from photos they take themselves and digitally edit, as well as found ones recording fleeting visual stimuli. Coinciding with a dual exhibition of Silvia Gertsch and Xerxes Ach at the Museum of Fine Arts Bern, this new book features their work from two decades. Richly illustrated, it puts their differing pictorial languages in a dance-like dialogue, revealing each artist's relation to current artistic discourses.

Silvia Buol, born 1954, studied fine arts in Basel and contemporary dance in Zurich. From the outset of her career in the 1980s, she has been working in both disciplines. She realises projects at the intersection of dance and performance and as a choreographer. In visual arts, she works mainly in drawing and watercolour and with photography. She merges performative and visual art also in her work as a lecturer at the Academy of Art and Design in Basel. Buol's large-format works on paper reflect her rich experience with space and movement, landscape and nature, becoming and decay. They express the artist's constant dialogue with the movement and volume of her own body as well as with the character and properties of colours, papers, and fabrics she is using. This beautifully manufactured, object-like book features for the first time a selection of some twenty-five series from Silvia Buol's works. The oversized spreads allow for presentation of some works in true size. Essays by scholar and critic Konrad Tobler and by writer Martin Zingg complement the reproductions of these floating drawings and watercolours. Text in English and German.

Silvia B chli (*1956) has developed her drawing oeuvre since the late 1970s in a manner that is both cautious and consistent. Her expressive approach to physicality developed over time to an almost introspective view of reality. Everyday perception forms the starting point of Siliva B chli's artistic process during which she appropriates things to give them an autonomous form in drawing. Starting in 1984, she began combining small-format drawings into ensembles, multipart wall compositions. Since 2001 she created large-format paper works with overlapping, filigree lineaments; in recent years she has become more prudent about the relationship between the areas of color and the background. Silvia B chli's quiet work is now appreciated all over the world and has been exhibited in Centre Pompidou in Paris (2007), the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung in Munich (2014), the Museum Weserburg in Bremen (2022), and the Centro Botin in Santander (2024). In 2009 she represented Switzerland at the 53rd Venice Biennale. The exhibition at Kunst Museum Winterthur is entitled They've Turned into Each Other. Which Is Which? after a line in a poem by American poet Elizabeth Bishop. The picture book conceived by Silvia B chli offers a comprehensive overview of her multifaceted oeuvre, with a series of small sculptures that she is presenting in Switzerland for the first time. My work entails approaching something that I don't know well and finding out about it by doing , she said.
