The Book of Thieves is the story of how a greedy few destroyed a nation called Oblivion.Oblivion was once a great place to live and work in, with excellent laws to protect everyone who worked there, and to keep conditions fair for them. Not anymore.A greedy few called Banksters cheated and stole after working harder at getting the rules changed and finding ways to simply ignore them than at earning an honest living. The Banksters were assisted by an untrustworthy Trustee, a Key Holder, and Dealers. The Oblivious - the citizens of Oblivion - did not notice until the deed was done. This cautionary tale should be read carefully, because it can happen anywhere. It can happen in any country, even with the best of laws. All that's necessary is for people to not pay attention, and for a few to cheat, lie, and steal. Those who do not pay attention can expect to lose their homes and worse.Life is unfair, and so are the Thieves.
Elephant's Kitchen - An Aspergirl's Study in Difference
Elephant's Kitchen - An Aspergirl's Study in Difference is about a quiet teenage girl named Delphine who has Asperger's, but just as with the television shows Bones and The Big Bang Theory, the condition is never mentioned. Instead, the story walks the reader through many of the markers of the condition. The story also addresses the misery associated with poverty when it comes face-to-face with the "haves" of society and their obliviousness and callousness towards those who are struggling to survive. Viewed by a teenage girl who volunteers at a church's charity kitchen, it highlights the damage that such insensitivity can inflict upon the very people that such institutions claim to benefit. This is just part of the backdrop of the story; Delphine also attends a private school, plays the violin, acts in a play, and deals with bullies. She is quiet, stealthy, and effective in her own way. This story was written to inspire teens with Asperger's, to show them that there is nothing wrong or bad about them, and to celebrate rather than condemn difference.

Almost a Meal - A True Tale of Horror tells the tale of how a man who was undiagnosed with Asperger's became acquainted with a chef who later proved to be a serial killer. It shows how Aspies do not recognize danger signs - though many neurotypicals might also fail to recognize them too. It also provides the reader with a disturbing horror story, and thus a good read.

Would you like to learn the history of Hawaiʻi, and get to know its culture and traditions through the convenience of a book? This one has it all: photographs, stories, and history, all told by a traveler who wanted to study that firsthand. What she compiled is a fun way to learn about Hawaiʻi, the result of her own, self-taught course about the Islands. It includes a bibliography and a glossary of Hawaiian words and phrases at the end, complete with a pronunciation key.As a bonus, the names, addresses, phone numbers, and websites of the places she visited are listed in the bibliographies of both San Francisco - a stop along the way to Hawaiʻi - and for Hawaiʻi itself. Here is a brief summary of the fun described in this travelogue: In October of 2012, the author and her parents took a trip to Hawai'i, visiting O'ahu and the Big Island. They stayed at a beautiful resort on O'ahu called Ko Olina, which means "to be filled with happiness" in the Hawaiian language. They toured historic sites - 'Iolani Palace in Honolulu and Hulihe'e Palace in Kailua-Kona.They visited the dead sailors aboard the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial. They took a ride in an electric submarine in the waters off Waikiki. They drove down Saddle Road between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa on the Big Island, and then down Chain of Craters Road to see where Kilauea had erupted over the pavement and into the Pacific Ocean. They tasted delicious Kona coffee and saw how it was grown, harvested, dried, and roasted. They attended a hokey lu'au on O'ahu and a wonderfully educational one on the Big Island. They walked through a tropical garden on each of the Islands that they visited, looking at orchids, butterflies, palm trees, macadamia trees, and cannonball trees. In short, the author led her parents on a fascinating tour of Hawaiian history, language, music, cuisine, culture, botany, zoology, and volcanology.

This volume details the Yew Chung Approach and the Twelve Values that exemplify the approach as a unique contribution to the field of early childhood education. The Yew Chung Education Foundation (YCEF) in Hong Kong is a nonprofit organization and a high-quality early childhood program that promotes a global lens and multilingualism through an emergent curriculum. This book explores the Twelve Values that exemplify the approach, including relationships, the emergent curriculum, inquiry-based pedagogy, and the multilingual and multicultural approach. Grounding these values in daily classroom practice and the broader sociocultural context of Hong Kong, it shows how the Yew Chung Approach effectively supports additional language learning through a progressive emergent curriculum with a high degree of child agency. It also explores the unique history of Hong Kong as an incubator and setting for the Yew Chung Approach and considers the relationships between the colonial history of the city, Hong Kong’s current status as a global city, and the mission of Yew Chung to provide children with a global lens.An important study which exemplifies and investigates a unique program and perspective within the field, this book will benefit scholarly and practitioner audiences within the global early childhood community, as well as appealing to academics, researchers and postgraduates working within early childhood education, comparative education, and bilingual education.

European Security in NATO's Shadow

European Security in NATO's Shadow

Stephanie C. Hofmann

NATO has been a successful forum for managing European security policy. Yet European governments have repeatedly tried to build a new security institution in NATO's shadow. In this innovative book, Stephanie C. Hofmann asks why governments attempted to create an additional institution despite no obvious functional necessity and why some attempts failed while others succeeded. European Security in NATO's Shadow considers security cooperation through the lens of party ideologies to shed new light on these questions. She observes that political parties are motivated to propose new institutions by their multidimensional ideologies. Moreover, the success of efforts to create such institutions depends on the degree of ideological congruence among parties in power. In particular, the relationship between the values of multilateralism, sovereignty and Europe informed the impetus and success rate of the attempts made during negotiations for the Maastricht, Amsterdam and Nice treaties to create a European security institution.

Humans can focus their attention narrowly (e.g., to read this text) or broadly (e.g., to determine which way a large crowd of people are moving). This Element comprehensively considers attentional breadth. Section 1 introduces the concept of attentional breadth, while Section 2 considers measures of attentional breadth. In particular, this section provides a critical discussion of the types of psychometric evidence which should be sought to establish the validity of measures of attentional breadth and reviews the available evidence through this lens. Section 3 considers the visual task performance consequences of attentional breadth, including prescribing several key methodological criteria that studies that manipulate attentional breadth need to meet, as well as a discussion of relevant theories and avenues for future theoretical development. Section 4 discusses the utility of the exogenous–endogenous distinction from covert shifts of attention for understanding the performance consequences of attentional breadth. Finally, Section 5 provides concluding remarks.
