From USA Today featured author Brian Barton... What happens when you enter Apple's top secret design lab without permission? What did Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple, write in his 13-word email to the author? And, what's the scene really like at Apple's Cupertino campus? The answers are in Words with Steve Jobs. Join the author, an ex Apple freelance employee, on a joyous (non-proprietary) romp through his tenure at the company's Cupertino headquarters. You'll get a unique view on Macworld 1997, the "Get a Mac" ad campaign, and the lunchtime crowd at Caff Macs--even Apple's hip designers. Words with Steve Jobs is an essay about Apple during its salad days. Brian Barton is a USA Today featured author whose work has been featured in Esquire, The London Times, and Time. Sir Barton and the Making of the Triple Crown

Sir Barton and the Making of the Triple Crown

Jennifer S Kelly; Steve Haskin

THE UNIVERSITY PRESS OF KENTUCKY
2023
nidottu
He was always destined to be a champion. Royally bred, with English and American classic winners in his pedigree, Sir Barton shone from birth, dubbed the "king of them all." But after a winless two-year-old season and a near-fatal illness, uncertainty clouded the start of Sir Barton's three-year-old season. Then his surprise victory in America's signature race, the Kentucky Derby, started him on the road to history, where he would go on to dominate the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes, completing America's first Triple Crown. His wins inspired the ultimate chase for greatness in American horse racing and established an elite group that would grow to include legends like Citation, Secretariat, and American Pharoah. After a series of dynamic wins in 1920, popular opinion tapped Sir Barton as the best challenger for the wonder horse Man o' War, and demanded a match race to settle once and for all which horse was the greatest. That duel would cement the reputation of one horse for all time and diminish the reputation of the other for the next century - until now. Sir Barton and the Making of the Triple Crown is the first book to focus on Sir Barton, his career, and his historic impact on horse racing. Author Jennifer S. Kelly uses extensive research and historical sources to examine this champion's life and achievements. Kelly charts how Sir Barton broke track records, scored victories over other champions, and sparked the yearly pursuit of Triple Crown glory. This book reveals the legacy of Sir Barton and his seminal contributions to Thoroughbred racing one hundred years after his pioneering achievement.

Elements of Contract Interpretation

Elements of Contract Interpretation

Steven J. Burton

Oxford University Press Inc
2009

This book describes and analyzes the law of contract interpretation in the United States, offering a strong guide for legal practitioners, judges, and scholars involved in contract law. Structured along two dimensions, Elements of Contract Interpretation first takes a look at the "elements" within contract interpretation. This includes the particular sources of evidence, the building blocks of interpretation that the courts recognize when interpreting contracts. Such examples include the governing contract terms; the circumstances when the contract is made; each party's purpose; usages; and the maxims of contract interpretation. The second dimension is three theories of contract interpretation - literalism, objective theory, and subjective theory. Each theory allows a court to recognize a different set of interpretive elements, and, in practice, how the law of different jurisdictions in the U.S. endorse one theory or another. Since some jurisdictions combine theories within a two- or three-step framework for analysis, this type of law makes this book a primary resource for both practitioners and academics.
Judging in Good Faith

Judging in Good Faith

Cambridge University Press

sidottu
This book offers an original theory of adjudication focused on the ethics of judging in courts of law, and proposes two main theses. One is the good faith thesis, which defends the possibility of lawful judicial decisions even when judges exercise discretion. The other is the permissible discretion thesis, which defends the compatibility of judicial discretion and legal indeterminacy with the legitimacy of adjudication in a constitutional democracy. Together these two theses oppose both conservative theories that would restrict the scope of adjudication unduly, and leftist critical theories that would liberate judges from the rule of law.

Explorations of the audio essay as medium and method. With contributors including Justin Barton, Angus Carlyle, Kodwo Eshun, Steve Goodman, Robin Mackay, Paul Nataraj, and Iain Sinclair, Sonic Faction presents extended lines of thought prompted by two Urbanomic events which explored the ways in which sound and voice can produce new sensory terrains and provoke speculative thought. Three recent pieces provide the catalyst for a discussion of the potential of the "audio essay" as medium and method, a machine for intensifying listening and unsettling the boundaries between existing forms: documentary, music, ambient sound, audiobook, field recording, radio play.... Kode9's Astro-Darien (2022) is a sonic fiction about simulation, presenting an alternative history of the Scottish Space Programme, haunted by the ghosts of the British Empire. Justin Barton and Mark Fisher's On Vanishing Land (2006) is a dreamlike account of a coastal walk that expands into questions of modernity, capitalism, fiction, and the micropolitics of escape. Robin Mackay's By the North Sea (2021) is a meditation on time, disappearance, and loss as heard through the fictions of Lovecraft, Ccru, and the spectre of Dunwich, the city that vanished beneath the waves. Alongside photographic documentation of the events and edited transcripts of the artists' discussions, Sonic Faction brings together contributors with diverse perspectives to address the question of the audio essay and to imagine its future.
