Disability Matters

Call of Crows

This book explores how communities, stakeholder groups and policy makers have thought about people with mental and physical impairments between the nineteenth and twenty-first centuries. At a time when new thinking is desperately needed our book argues that this can only be delivered through a wider, more diverse and (above all) historically informed debate about the nature and meaning of mental and physical impairment. For us, history is the key to a welfare future.
Pauper Voices, Public Opinion and Workhouse Reform in Mid-Victorian England

Pauper Voices, Public Opinion and Workhouse Reform in Mid-Victorian England

Peter Jones; Steven King

Springer Nature Switzerland AG
2020
sidottu
This book represents the first attempt to identify and describe a workhouse reform ‘movement’ in mid- to late-nineteenth-century England, beyond the obvious candidates of the Workhouse Visiting Society and the voices of popular critics such as Charles Dickens and Florence Nightingale. It is a subject on which the existing workhouse literature is largely silent, and this book therefore fills a considerable gap in our understanding of contemporary attitudes towards institutional welfare. Although many scholars have touched on the more obvious strands of workhouse criticism noted above, few have gone beyond these to explore the possibility that a concerted ‘movement’ existed that sought to place pressure on those with responsibility for workhouse administration, and to influence the trajectory of workhouse policy.

What so many take for granted, Steven Anthony King had struggled with his entire life. From the age of seven to fifty-one, he had amassed ten eye operations and had lost sight in his right eye. Then, from 2017 to 2018, four more eye operations, temporary blindness, and the threat of permanent blindness pushed Steven's faith and perseverance to the limits. IT'S REALLY GOOD TO SEE YOU takes you on a suspense-filled journey, which forces Steven to rely on his strong belief in prayer, meditation, affirmation, and a will to never give up. With the support of his loving wife, family, and friends, Steven manifested the only outcome acceptable to him: saving his sight by any means necessary. After reading this book, the phrase: "It's really good to see you," will never mean the same to you again.

Read along with Daisy and her family for a sweet tale and even sweeter tips on having a peaceful and stress free bedtime routine. You may even secure some much needed slumber time yourself.Setting a time for bed, with a nightly routine, has tremendous benefits for the entire family. For one, it is an opportunity for children to learn how to relax and sooth themselves, a skill that is useful for their entire lives. Another benefit is that routines set reasonable expectations, and can transform bedtime into a special time for bonding while removing the stress sometimes associated with making sure everyone gets a good night of sleep and relaxation. This is especially great in a household with more than one child. When story time is a part of the routine it can lead a child to a love of language deep inside and there's no good reason to stop as you all get older. Reading aloud together even as children enter their teenage years is widely recommended as an aid to keep the family connected in a positive way.Bedtime and bedtime routines help us get the sleep we need so that we may function at peak levels in order to be our best selves.

Everyone knows Steven James is pretty much known for being horrible at school. (Everyone who has read Steven James: I Just Can't Pay Attention knows.). His days at school typically consist of him misplacing his school supplies and losing the kickball game for his classmates. On average, his mom gets about 2 phone calls a day from his teacher, Mrs. Jones. Steven finds it hard to pay attention in class and his work NEVER gets on the 'Super Job' board. It was easy to say that he hadn't mastered anything until the day he became Math King. Read to find out how Steven's life turned upside down the moment he realized he reigned supreme at math.

For King and Kaiser!

Steven E. Clemente

Steven Clemente describes how conservative traditions and artistocratic values were preserved in the selection and training of German army officers prior to World War I despite changing times and the influx of many middle-class recruits into the army. He demonstrates how right thinking and service to the King and the Kaiser were the basis for Prussian officer education in the period from 1860 to 1914. The history provides considerable detail about German secondary school education, the selection of officers, the curriculum, and life in the cadet and war schools, the life of a subaltern, and the education of the Prussian War Academy. The book concludes with an analysis of the attitudes and loyalties of the officers that entered World War I. Students of European history and military affairs will find this study one that raises a number of provocative questions about German performance in World War I and in subsequent years.

A master of literary transformation, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Martin Dressler turns his attention to the transformations of love in these three hypnotic novellas. - "No one alive writes better about yearning and heartbreak.... Before such mastery, a reader can do nothing but bow his head." --The Washington Post Book WorldWhile ostensibly showing her home to a prospective buyer, the narrator of "Revenge" unfolds an origami-like narrative of betrayal and psychic violence. In "An Adventure of Don Juan" the legendary seducer seeks out new diversion on an English country estate with devastating results. And the title novella retells the story of Tristan and Ysolt from the agonized perspective of King Mark, a husband who compulsively looks for evidence of his wife's adultery yet compulsively denies what he finds. Combining enchantment as ancient as Sheherezade's with up-to-the-minute acuity and unease, The King in the Tree is Millhauser at his best.
