Ancient Communities in the Mimbres Valley

Ancient Communities in the Mimbres Valley

Roger Anyon; Steven A. LeBlanc

University of Arizona Press

sidottu
In the Mimbres Valley of southwestern New Mexico, archaeologists have been working for decades to meticulously excavate archaeological sites. Expanding beyond studies that focus on a single pueblo, this volume represents the final report on the excavations of the Mimbres Foundation. It brings together data from a range of pithouse and pueblo sites of different sizes and histories in diverse locations—to refine the current understandings of Mimbres region archaeology in the context of the Greater Southwest. From the end of the Late Pithouse period through the Black Mountain phase, the book provides excellent documentation of the artifacts and data recovered from the sites, addresses models of Mimbres community, and tracks change and continuity in the valley over centuries. In addition, the authors consider the nature of the relationship between the Classic Mimbres period population of the valley and the people of the succeeding Black Mountain phase, as well as relationships among the Black Mountain phase people and those of neighboring parts of the region, including the Casas Grandes world and the Jornada Mogollon area. In Ancient Communities in the Mimbres Valley two leading archaeologists bring together a trove of unpublished investigations, expanding understandings and setting a course for the future.

Cocaine

Cocaine

American Psychiatric Association Publishing
2003
pokkari
Sports heroes, executives, and the homeless—cocaine permeates every inch of our society, with tragic results. Although casual use of cocaine has clearly declined, the number of daily users, in particular those using crack, continues to climb. Why do people continue to use cocaine? What is its appeal? How does it affect the body and mind? What can a person do if a family member or friend is using cocaine? In the past decade, the introduction of "crack" has increased the popularity of cocaine. Treatments have changed to adapt to this new, cheaper, more widely available drug. This Second Edition of Cocaine—by three noted psychiatrists from Harvard University and the University of Utah—highlights the tremendous research effort that has been mounted to discover the most effective way to help cocaine-dependent patients. It covers what cocaine is, the different methods of its use, its effects on the brain and other organs, and its psychological and social consequences for users and those around them—both at home and in the workplace. This book also covers cocaine addiction—how it happens, who is at risk, how to treat it, and how to find help. Cocaine includes a list of commonly asked questions about the drug and a self-test to determine if you or someone you love is dependent on cocaine.

This volume guides readers through the dynamic field of applied developmental science while explaining the importance of conducting research across diverse contexts. The first part begins with a review of relevant theoretical perspectives and then defines diverse contexts along two dimensions: the backgrounds and identities of the children and families who participate in developmental research, and the lived environments that those children and families inhabit, from their homes and schools to juvenile justice and child welfare service settings. The second part turns first to the designs, measures, and analytic approaches that developmental researchers may employ in applied settings, with an emphasis on the methodological issues that are more likely to arise when research is conducted in real-world environments. It then addresses how applied developmental researchers are currently trained, and outlines how those training approaches will need to adapt to promote a more equitable, responsive, and relevant science. The final part of the book focuses on why it is essential that developmental research is conducted in diverse contexts if that research is to yield findings that are broadly generalizable, and presents strategies intended to maximize the likelihood that applied developmental science will fulfil its promise to improve the lives of children and families. The book's final chapter reviews the landscape of applied developmental science and the different professional roles that applied developmental researchers may choose to inhabit throughout their careers. Written in an approachable style, and featuring interviews with applied developmental scientists working in a range of settings, Conducting Applied Developmental Science in Diverse Contexts will appeal to students and scholars across a wide range of disciplines including psychology, sociology, anthropology, human development, social work, and education.

"In Human Dimensions of Cyber Security, Terry Bossomaier, Steven D’Alessandro, and Roger Bradbury have produced a book that … shows how it is indeed possible to achieve what we all need; a multidisciplinary, rigorously researched and argued, and above all accessible account of cybersecurity — what it is, why it matters, and how to do it."--Professor Paul Cornish, Visiting Professor, LSE IDEAS, London School of EconomicsHuman Dimensions of Cybersecurity explores social science influences on cybersecurity. It demonstrates how social science perspectives can enable the ability to see many hazards in cybersecurity. It emphasizes the need for a multidisciplinary approach, as cybersecurity has become a fundamental issue of risk management for individuals, at work, and with government and nation states. This book explains the issues of cybersecurity with rigor, but also in simple language, so individuals can see how they can address these issues and risks. The book provides simple suggestions, or cybernuggets, that individuals can follow to learn the dos and don’ts of cybersecurity. The book also identifies the most important human and social factors that affect cybersecurity. It illustrates each factor, using case studies, and examines possible solutions from both technical and human acceptability viewpoints.
