The Battle of Midway was, on paper, an improbable victory for the smaller, less experienced American navy and air force, so much so that it was quickly described as "a miracle." Yet fortune favored the Americans at Midway, and the conventional wisdom has it that the Americans' lucky streak continued as the war in the Pacific turned against the Japanese. This new history demonstrates that luck, let alone miracles, had little to do with it. In The Silver Waterfall, Brendan Simms and Steven McGregor show how the efforts of America's peacetime navy combined with creative innovations made by designers and industrialists were largely responsible for the victory. The Douglas Dauntless Dive Bomber, a uniquely conceived fighting weapon, delivered a brutally accurate attack the Japanese quickly came to dread. Told through a vivid narrative, Simms and McGregor show how the course of the war in the Pacific was dramatically altered, emphasizing the crucial combination of a culture of innovation, a brilliant contribution from immigrants, and a vital intelligence coup that allowed the navy to orchestrate the devastating attack on the Japanese and dominate the Pacific for good.

Consuming Knowledge: Studying Knowledge Use in Leisure and Work Activities

It is difficult to overstate the importance of personal consumption both to individual consumers and to the economy. While consumer&, are recognized as valuing market goods and services for the activities they can construct from them in the frameworks of several disciplines, consequences of the characteristics of goods and services they use in these activities have not been well studied. In the discourse to follow, I will contrast knowledge-yielding and conventional goods and services as factors in the construction of activities that consumers engage in when they are not in the workplace. Consumers will be seen as deciding on non-work activities and the inputs to these activities according to their objectives, and the values and cumulated skills they hold. I will suggest that knowledge content in these activities can be efficient for consumer objectives and also have important externalities through its effect on productivity at work and economic growth. The exposition will seek to elaborate these points and contribute to multi disciplinal dialogue on consumption. It takes as its starting point the contention that consumption is simultaneously an economic and social psychological process and that integration of content can contribute to explanation.
Consumption takes place in settings or environments which have both direct and indirect effects on its dynamic path. Direct effects of environments on activities in consuming can occur through constraints that environments impose. Environment can also have indirect effects on consumption through enduring modification of internalized constructs which enter heuristics for decisions on activities. The importance of environments to consumption is increased by the definitional dependence of status on the judgements of others. This study examines microprocessing in consumer activities for status as it interacts with structure in the environments of these activities. The importance of environments in status activities provides the basis for a seperate, but related inquiry into observed differences in the form they take across societies. Conjecture on the consequences of differences in the structure of environments for consumption that typify a society is studied in the narrative statements by members of comparison societies and in the content of print advertising in these societies. Evolutionary processes which could establish observed differences in structure across societies are also considered in both their systematic and random components. I review models of random drift and stochastic resonance as candidate forms for generating observed structure in environments. Directions for the subsequent study of status through consumption are discussed.P Introduction: Status Through Consumption; Knowledge Use in Nonwork Activities for Status; Interactions of Consumer Microprocessing and Structured Environments: Activity Feedback and the Stability of Structure; Awards and Honors Systems in Structured Environments: Cross Societal Comparisons of Narrative Statements on Consuming for Status; Comparative Analyses of Consumption Appeals in the Print Advertising of the USA and France, 1955-1991 Random Process in the Generation of Structured Environments; Overview and directions for Study of Status Through Consumption.

It is 1994; Ellen Parker, a thirteen-year-old rural Ohio girl, is mourning the death of her cousin Eileen, killed by a wild bullet from a fight between the Steel Riders and a rival outlaw motorcycle gang, both struggling to control the methamphetamine trade out of Butler County. As Ellen and her family try to comfort one another, county Deputy Sheriff JJ Jeffers works with a federal task force to break up the trade but is becoming increasingly frustrated with the lack of progress and his minor role. The summer stretches on and Ellen finds a sanctuary on the farm of her grandfather Tom. Then Steel Riders start dying, apparently in retaliation. But Jeffers is not so sure another gang is at work, particularly after uncovering the Parker family history. While Jeffers wonders and searches, the Steel Riders are not waiting. They strike back at their rivals and those who they believe are hounding them. Ellen uncovers a terrible secret, one that could destroy her sanctuary and her Grandpa Tom, and has a powerful choice to make; Deputy Jeffers, on a parallel track of discovery, also finds himself with a choice, between the law and justice, one that could change the course of his life. The lives of a girl coming of age and a man finding a challenge to who he is weave around the threads of lives of people in Ohio in the summer of '94.
It is 2003: Ellen Parker, now a journalism intern and trying to deal with her demons from violence of a decade ago, watches while in the countryside and small towns of eastern Pennsylvania, someone is stalking and killing women. The killer is not a fool and appears to be quite knowledgeable of police procedures. Disciplined, intelligent, his motives carefully hidden, the killer's violence is escalating. The task force hunting him, including county Deputy Sheriff Craig Morgan, knows they are running out of time. Ellen has an idea for her paper that is both exciting and terrifying: explore the mind of the killer by interviewing a convicted murderer who has served his time, former psychologist Michael Klemmer. She, Klemmer, and Morgan cross paths with each other and the killer, a man more dangerous than any of them realize, for he has determined to stop his pursuers by hunting them.Steven M. Silver, Ph.D., is the author of the multi-volume Wild Geese Saga science fiction series, three books of poetry ("Victor Echo Zero Five," "American Travelers," and "Hot Chrome, Smooth Leather, and a Red Bandanna"), and co-author of a book on psychotherapy ("Light in the Heart of Darkness: EMDR and the Treatment of War and Terrorism Survivors"). "Killers" is the second of the Ellen Parker novels, the first being "A Dangerous Man."
Ellen Parker, now a Philadelphia journalist, is contacted by an old story subject, Iraq veteran Elizabeth Chernov. Elizabeth and a young girl are on the run from the drug-gang killers of her family. Ellen and Elizabeth try to find safety with the local and Federal authorities, but the gang's leader has a source close to Elizabeth and the killers are closing in, trying to remove the last witnesses. And the most dangerous of the killers is a man who has left murdered women hanging on barbed wire fences from the Carolinas to southern Pennsylvania - hired and hidden by the gang, he is put on the trail of Elizabeth and the young girl. To feed his dark hunger and fulfill his contract, he uses Ellen as his unwitting guide to hunt Elizabeth and the girl; Ellen is suddenly in a life and death struggle to avoid becoming another woman on the wire.Woman on the Wire is the third novel in the Ellen Parker series.
Ellen Parker is taking a long overdue vacation in Coalville, Pennsylvania, testing her healing after last year's brutal events. Coalville is a small town noted, in the summer of 2014, for its antique stores, bed and breakfasts, and - most recently - ugly death. A tragic plane crash the month before has drawn the attention of hunters from both sides of the law, all looking for something hidden on the plane, something now missing. Initially focused on her own healing and an interest in a handsome man from New York, soon Ellen is aware of the growing danger of the hunters willing to kill for things hidden and revealed. Despite her FBI friend Karen Deevers on the case, Ellen is alone when the hunters close in, for she has placed herself between them and the hidden thing they seek.Steven M. Silver, Ph.D. is the author of the multi-volume Wild Geese Saga science fiction series, three books of poetry, and co-author of a book on psychotherapy ("Light in the Heart of Darkness: EMDR and the Treatment of War and Terrorism Survivors"). "Hidden Things" is the fourth of the Ellen Parker novels, the first being "A Dangerous Man," followed by "Killers" and "Woman On the Wire."
In the spring of 2016, someone kidnapped the young step-daughter of John Allen Douglas, a very dangerous figure in the Philadelphia criminal world. Is this the opening move in a gang war, one designed to distract Douglas from his business, or is it something more personal?Ellen is drawn into the hunt for the child when Robert Blasingame reappears in her life. As Blasingame and Tyrone Rydell, a young veteran with a knack for computers, follow the kidnappers' trail from a dead man's home, Ellen works her reporter contacts and friends trying to find any clues that could aid them. With little to go on, and running out of time, Ellen, Blasingame, and Tyrone go into the dark Pennsylvania night to save a child.

20th Century Alcohol & Tobacco Ads. 45th Ed.

Vices or virtues: drinking and smoking provided marketers with products to be forged into visual feasts. In this lush compendium of advertisements, we explore how depictions of these commodities spanned from the elegant to the offbeat, revealing how manufacturers prodded their customers throughout the 20th century to imbibe and inhale. Each era’s alcohol and tobacco trends are exuberantly captured page after page, with brand images woven into American popular culture so effectively that almost anyone could identify such icons as the Marlboro Man or Spuds MacKenzie, figures so familiar they could appear in ads without the product itself. Other advertisers devised clever and subliminal approaches to selling their wares, as the wildly successful Absolut campaign confirmed. Even doctors contributed to an improbable propaganda, testifying that smoking could calm your nerves and soothe your throat, while hailing liquor as an elixir capable of bringing social success. Whether you savor these visual delights, or enjoy inhaling and wallowing in forbidden pleasures, you will certainly be thrilled by this exploration of a decidedly vibrant—and sometimes controversial—chapter of advertising history.
