Blood and Violence in Early Modern France

Blood and Violence in Early Modern France

The rise of civilized conduct and behaviour has long been seen as one of the major factors in the transformation from medieval to modern society. Thinkers and historians alike argue that violence progressively declined as men learned to control their emotions. The feud is a phenomenon associated with backward societies, and in the West duelling codified behaviour and channelled aggression into ritualised combats that satisfied honour without the shedding of blood. French manners and codes of civility laid the foundations of civilized Western values. But as this original work of archival research shows we continue to romanticize violence in the era of the swashbuckling swordsman. In France, thousands of men died in duels in which the rules of the game were regularly flouted. Many duels were in fact mini-battles and must be seen not as a replacement of the blood feud, but as a continuation of vengeance-taking in a much bloodier form. This book outlines the nature of feuding in France and its intensification in the wake of the Protestant Reformation, civil war and dynastic weakness, and considers the solutions proposed by thinkers from Montaigne to Hobbes. The creation of the largest standing army in Europe since the Romans was one such solution, but the militarization of society, a model adopted throughout Europe, reveals the darker side of the civilizing process.

In Lagrasse and the Corbi res, the author gives a highly personal, often humorous account of his time spent in the charismatic and beguiling region of the Corbi res in the deep south of France. He recounts his experiences of house hunting, wild river swimming and exploring the many castles, medieval villages, towns and cities of the area, whilst enjoying its gastronomic delights, beautiful Mediterranean beaches and breathtaking scenery. Ideal for visitors travelling to the area for the first time, and for those who may have already sampled its delights and wish to be reminded of its many attractions, Lagrasse and the Corbi res is both entertaining and informative. It makes for the perfect holiday read and offers a light-hearted perspective of life in the Corbi res and the region's many must-see destinations: some well-known and some not so well-known. Child and Adolescent Depression, An Issue of Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Clinics of North America
Recent work on emotional regulation gives a powerful new lens through which to view the evolution across childhood and adolescence of the lived experience and clinical presentation of depression. We have a richer picture of the depressed child, and the child at risk for depression, in interaction with family and wider world. We know more about the development and the developmental psychopathology of coping strategies. These advances give provocative clues to the actual processes whereby well-established risk and protective factors might interact to produce, sustain or curtail a depressive syndrome. This in turn opens the door to treatment and prevention approaches that are truly developmentally informed. This is the philosophy behind this completely updated and comprehensive analysis of childhood depression.
