Er begreift Tugend als eine zwischen extremen Empfindungen und Wollensinhalten angesiedelte Haltung der Mitte (gr. Mesotes), die eine gleich gro e Distanz zu den affektiv- voluntativen Extrempunkten eines "Zuviel" oder "Zuwenig" aufweist. Und wenngleich die Mesotes augrund ihrer prim r normativen Bestimmung in erster Linie eine ethische Qualit t darstellt, enth lt sie aufgrund der Entgegensetzung zu den Extrempunkten "Zuviel" oder "Zuwenig" auch eine quantitative Komponente. Der Essay arbeitet in zwei Darstellungsschritten das aristotelische Mesotes- Verst ndnis heraus. Konkret die Mesotes als Tugendideal in der "Nikomachischen Ethik" und die Mesotes als politisches Idel bzw. die Mesotes als optimale politische Verfasstheit einer Polis in der "Politik." Die Analyse ber cksichtigt hierbei insbesondere Br che und Kontinuit ten in der aristotelischen Argumentationsf hrung im Wandel der Schriften.
