Believe, Sachin Tendulkar told him - and he took it to heart, getting the word etched on his arm as a tattoo. In this book, Suresh Raina takes us through the challenges he faced as a young cricketer. He was bullied in school and at cricket camps, but he always punched above his weight, overcoming every adversity life threw at him and never giving up. This is the story of the lessons he learnt and the friendships he built. Peppered with invaluable insights - about the game and about life - that Raina acquired from senior colleagues like M.S. Dhoni, Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble, Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly, among others, this book will make you believe in the power of hard work, love, luck, hope and camaraderie. It is a journey through the highs and lows in the cricketing career of a man who saw his world fall apart and yet became one of the most influential white-ball cricketers India has ever seen.
Transnational Literacy Autobiographies as Translingual Writing
The literacy autobiography is a personal narrative reflecting on how one’s experiences of spoken and written words have contributed to their ongoing relationship with language and literacy. Transnational Literacy Autobiographies as Translingual Writing is a cutting-edge study of this engaging genre of writing in academic and professional contexts. In this state-of-the-art collection, Suresh Canagarajah brings together 11 samples of writing by students that both document their literary journeys and pinpoint the seminal works affecting their development as translingual readers and writers. Integrating the narrative of the author, which is written as his own literacy autobiography, with a close analysis of these texts, this book: presents a case for the literacy autobiography as an archetypal genre that prepares writers for the conventions and processes required in other genres of writing; demonstrates the serious epistemological and rhetorical implications behind the genre of literacy autobiography among migrant scholars and students; effectively translates theoretical publications on language diversity for classroom purposes, providing a transferable teaching approach to translingual writing; analyzes the tropes of transnational writers and their craft in "meshing" translingual resources in their writing; demonstrates how transnationalism and translingualism are interconnected, guiding readers toward an understanding of codemeshing not as a cosmetic addition to texts but motivated toward resolving inescapable personal and social dilemmas. Written and edited by one of the most highly regarded linguists of his generation, this book is key reading for scholars and students of applied linguistics, TESOL, and literacy studies, as well as tutors of writing and composition worldwide.

The Art of Failure

Suresh Raval

Originally published in 1986, this is a powerful and original book. It offers textual interpretation of Conrad’s major work and articulates the subtlety and richness of his treatment of social-political institutions and of the forces that complicate and distort private and public life.Suresh Raval argues that the social-personal relations in Conrad’s fiction cannot be conceived apart from their existence in the political life of a community; but at the same time they cannot be accommodated institutionally. The author’s concern is with the problematic status of the self under various perspectives: experience and understanding (Heart of Darkness), an ethical ideal (Lord Jim), history (Nostromo), ideology (The Secret Agent and Under Western Eyes), scepticism (Victory). What the self is remains ambiguous and elusive. Conrad’s fiction is concerned with exhibiting the failure of language, but always as a result of an immense effort of language itself. As language undoes itself in the act of seeking utterance, so Conrad’s fictional mode – romance – turns into the opposite of itself as it unfolds. Raval demonstrates that incompatible alternatives – intention and action, thought and experience, the individual and the social, the logical and the contingent – are entangled with each other, and how this entanglement works in the fiction.Raval’s exploration of Conrad’s scepticism shows why Conrad cannot be characterized as a political conservative or radical without distorting the complexity and seriousness of his reflection on society. For his scepticism is the product not just of intelligence but of intelligence conscious of its limitations, and is thus able to make a devastating critique of the nihilism sometimes attributed to Conrad by critics. Only those who think that morality has to have a secure single foundation if it is to be real are pushed into regarding Conrad’s scepticism as a form of nihilism.Professor Raval’s important study brings philosophical and literary interests to bear on Conrad’s major fiction and illuminates those aspects of his art which have puzzled and fascinated his readers. It will be deservedly valued by those studying and teaching modern literature.

Leading Strategy Execution demonstrates to senior executives ways in which they can successfully enthuse their employees so that they willingly implement essential company strategies. Having a good strategy isn't enough to guarantee a company's success - executives and managers need to ensure that their strategies are implemented correctly throughout the company, and that all staff are on board. The book is divided into three sections: 1.Energy of Engagement: This section demonstrates how to engage and energise your employees so that they really want to implement your strategy, and so that they accept their role and contribution towards making the strategy a success. 2.Energy of Change: This section illustrates ways in which executives can persuade employees to alter their habits, which may have been reinformed over a number of years by business processes and systems. Managers will learn how to give staff the exact skills and confidence needed to apply the new ways of thinking that are required to turn today's new strategy into tomorrow's business culture. 3.Energy of Management: This section reveals to executives how to energise and employ the middle managers within the business. This book will explain how to ensure that the middle managers are focused on the execution of crucial company strategies, so that they become ambassadors of change rather than instruments of inertia. Including tools, 'how to' checklists and real life examples, Leading Strategy Execution is an accessible title for busy executives, which takes a practical and light approach to the topic of strategy execution through employee engagement.
Organizational Wisdom and Executive Courage

Organizational Wisdom and Executive Courage

Throughout history, humankind has progressed in a somewhat predictable manner. Leaders have been able to leverage the accumulated knowledge residing within the world's organizations to presage tomorrow's demands and make their decisions accordingly. But there are times that defy such extrapolations, and ours seems to be one of them. Faced with a veritable maelstrom of technological innovation and ensuing social upheaval, today's organizational leaders must be risk takers, basing their decisions for the future not on the existing bodies of concrete information, but on an invaluable reserve of organizational wisdom and executive courage. The contributors to this book explore the roles wisdom and courage play in shaping our organizational lives and the implications they hold for the advancement of organizational science and practice. Filled with new thought and compelling insights, Organizational Wisdom and Executive Courage offers executives, educators, and scholars alike the means to broaden their thinking about change and management.
Optimal Consumption and Investment with Bankruptcy
This book presents papers on continuous-time consumption investment models by Suresh Sethi and various co-authors. Sir Isaac Newton said that he saw so far because he stood on the shoulders of gi ants. Giants upon whose shoulders Professor Sethi and colleagues stand are Robert Merton, particularly Merton's (1969, 1971, 1973) seminal papers, and Paul Samuelson, particularly Samuelson (1969). Karatzas, Lehoczky, Sethi and Shreve (1986), henceforth KLSS, re produced here as Chapter 2, reexamine the model proposed by Mer ton. KLSS use methods of modern mathematical analysis, taking care to prove the existence of integrals, check the existence and (where appro priate) the uniqueness of solutions to equations, etc. KLSS find that un der some conditions Merton's solution is correct; under others, it is not. In particular, Merton's solution for aHARA utility-of-consumption is correct for some parameter values and not for others. The problem with Merton's solution is that it sometimes violates the constraints against negative wealth and negative consumption stated in Merton (1969) and presumably applicable in Merton (1971 and 1973). This not only affects the solution at the zero-wealth, zero-consumption boundaries, but else where as well. Problems with Merton's solution are analyzed in Sethi and Taksar (1992), reproduced here as Chapter 3.
