Facebook has fundamentally changed how the world connects. No other company has played a greater role in the history of social networking online. Yet Facebook is no longer simply a social networking site or social media platform. Facebook is Facebook. Taina Bucher shows how Facebook has become an idea of its own: something that cannot be fully described using broader categories. Facebook has become so commonplace that most people have a conception of what it is, yet it increasingly defies categorization. If we want to understand Facebook's power in contemporary society and culture, Bucher argues, we need to start by challenging our widespread conception of what Facebook is. Tracing the development and evolution of Facebook as a social networking site, platform, infrastructure and advertising company, she invites readers to consider Facebook anew. Contrary to the belief that nobody uses Facebook anymore, Facebook has never been more powerful. This timely book is important reading for students and scholars of media and communication, as well as anyone seeking to understand the Facebook phenomenon.

The Bone Whisperers: Two Women Scientists and Their Work to Connect Lost Lives in Bosnia-Herzegovina
Taina Tervonen
Schaffner Press

The 2022 recipient of the Jan Michalski Award for excellence in reporting on human rights issues by a European writer, The Bone Whisperers is an account of the author's reporting and involvement over the course of several years with those whose delicate and morally essential task it has been to exhume and identify the victims found in mass graves throughout the war-torn regions of the world, particularly in Bosnia-Herzegovina as part of the ongoing process over the past two decades, led by the International Commission on Missing Persons, to recover and identify the remains and reunite the victims with their families. Tervonen follows two women in particular involved in this extremely important yet heart-wrenching work; one, Senem, who searches the DNA profiles stored in bone samples, and the other Darija, who tries to obtain blood samples from the survivors and their families to find a genetic match to that of the victims.
Finnish journalist and filmmaker Taina Tervonen, author of The Bone Whisperers, returns to her roots in Senegal to investigate the mystery behind a group of culturally sensitive artifacts that had been captured by the French army in the late 19th century. Among these objects of particular interest to her investigation were a sword and scabbard that belonged to the Senegalese Cheik Oumar Tall, a religious leader who waged a holy war against the French occupiers. This sword was taken from the hands of Tall's nine year-old grandson Abdoulaye, captured along with his sister by a French officer who then had them sent to France. In Hostages, Tervonen has unraveled an historic mystery in which the epic and poignant story of the repatriation of these stolen artifacts is brought to light. Her riveting investigation reveals a tragic case of inhumanity and cultural erasure that will appeal to readers of historical inquiry.

Math Mammoth Grade 4-B worktext (Canadian version) is the student worktext for the latter half of the 4th grade math, and part of Math Mammoth complete curriculum for fourth grade. The book starts out with the topic of division. The focus is on learning long division and using division in word problems. In the geometry chapter, students first revise area and perimeter, and then concentrate on the topic of angles. Students measure and draw angles, solve simple angle problems and classify triangles according to their angles. They also study parallel and perpendicular lines.Fractions and decimals are presented last in the school year. These two chapters practise only some of the basic operations with fractions and decimals. The focus is still on conceptual understanding and on building a good foundation towards 5th grade math, where fractions and decimals will be in focus. FeaturesMath Mammoth focuses on conceptual understanding. It explains the "WHY", so your children can understand the math, not just learn "HOW" to do it.The curriculum is mastery-oriented. This means it concentrates fairly long on a topic, delving into its various aspects. This promotes conceptual understanding, as opposed to spiral curricula that often tend to jump from topic to topic too much. There is a strong emphasis on mental math and number sense. It requires very little teacher preparation, which is a big help to most parents.: ) The curriculum has no separate teacher's manual nor is it scripted. The introduction to each chapter has some notes for the teacher concerning the material in the chapter. All the instruction is written directly to the student.

The book discusses recycled discourses of language and nationalism in Finnish higher education, demonstrating the need to look beyond language in the study of language policies of higher education. It analyses the historical and political layeredness of language policies as well as the intertwined nature of national and international developments in understanding new nationalism. Finnish higher education language policies were fuelled by the dynamics and tensions between the national languages Finnish and Swedish until the 2000s, when English begins to catalyse post nationalist discourses of economy and competitiveness. In the 2010s, English begins to be seen as a threat to Finnish. Educational, economic and epistemic nationalism emerge as the main cycles of new nationalist language policies in Finnish higher education. The book will be of interest to language policy and higher education scholars and practitioners, as well as graduate students language policy and higher education.

This book covers the central aspects of Advancing Research on Active Aging and Participation, illustrating how individuals can prepare for old age and promote their own well-being. The increase in the aging population has been foreseen for a long time. Traditionally, aging is considered to comprise progressive decline of health and social life, stemming from biased selection of predominantly negative outcomes in studies. However, changes in the life stage of old age have been so rapid that the general perception of growing old has become somewhat outdated. There is an evident need for a multidisciplinary work that describes aging and old age based on the latest knowledge. Dealing with aging in all areas of society should be based on knowledge, not assumptions. This book provides up-to-date information on how aging can be studied and how modern times are reshaping it. Besides, it demonstrates how a more positive approach in aging research will structure the ideas and alleviate the prejudices we have about aging and old age. The book is intended for students and professionals in the social, leisure and health care fields at universities. It can also be adopted for education in the fields of physical education, medicine, and psychology. Additionally, individuals working in the field of health, functional ability, physical activity, rehabilitation, mental health, and well-being of the aging population will benefit from this work.

Ehrlichiosis, babesiosis and leishmaniasis are vector-borne diseases with a high incidence in many countries around the world. The causative agent of canine ehrlichiosis is Ehrlichia canis, while Leishmania infantum causes canine visceral leishmaniasis. Babesiosis is another disease caused by haemoparasites, the protozoa of the large Babesia spp family. Diseases caused by haemoparasites can trigger similar clinical and laboratory changes in the host, which can lead to conflicts when it comes to diagnosis. And often, because they share vectors, the animals could be co-infected. In addition, leishmaniasis is a zoonosis that is very harmful to human health. With this in mind, the aim of this study was to assess the occurrence of these diseases in the municipality of Conc rdia, in the west of Santa Catarina, using the Indirect Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA), Indirect Immunofluorescence Reaction (RIFI) and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) tests. This book is aimed at veterinary medicine students, as well as trained professionals and researchers in the field.
