This examination of the Tyrrell-Terrell clan stretches back to the Middle Ages, finding and explaining references to ancestors who resided in Europe several centuries ago.Although brief, this book's contents are the result of deep researches into archival data undertaken at the beginning of the 20th century. The enquiry resulted in the discovery of the family founder, who was connected with the Counts of the Vexin - a group of nobles who ruled lands in a time predating the Norman Conquest of England in the 11th century. From here, we are taken through the various manifestations of Tyrrell/Terrell ancestors, often recorded under a variety of different spellings due to inconsistent records keeping of the distant past.Later in the enquiry, we see various Tyrrell family members appear as migr s in colonial North America, with records found in the archives of both New York and Boston. Mentions of notable family members and their progeny also appear, that readers can trace the lineages over the centuries. Descendants as well as genealogy enthusiasts will find this research illuminating, both in the sense of what was uncovered, as well as the limitations present in sources from long ago.

A concise, engaging, practical overview of children’s literature that keeps the focus on the books children read. This brief introduction to children’s literature genres leaves time to actually read children’s books. Written on the assumption that the focus of a children’s literature course should be on the actual books that children read, the authors first wrote this book in 1996 as a “textbook for people who don’t like children’s literature textbooks.” Today it serves as an overview to shed light on the essentials of children’s literature and how to use it effectively with young readers, from PreK to 8th grade. The authors use an enjoyable, conversational style to achieve their goal of providing a practical overview of children’s books that offers a framework and background information, while keeping the spotlight on the books themselves.

The "searing" (New York Times Book Review) first novel by Whitney Terrell, author of The Good LieutenantA New York Times Notable BookWhen a young debutante's body is pulled from the Missouri River, the inhabitants of Kansas City-a metropolis fractured by class division-are forced to examine their own buried history. At the center of the intrigue is Booker Short, a bitter young black man who came to town bearing a grudge about the past. His ascent into white Kansas City society, his romance with the young and wealthy Clarissa Sayers, and his involvement in her death polarize the city and lead to the final, shocking revelation of the wrong that Booker has come to avenge. With razor-sharp detail that presents the city as a character as vivid as the people living there, Whitney Terrell explores a divided society with unflinching insight.

It is by no means absurd to say that Engels invented Marxism. His work did more than Marx to make converts of the most influential political movement of modern times. He was not only the father of dialectical and historical materialism, the official philosophies of history and science in many communist countries; he was also the first Marxist historian, anthropologist, philosopher, and commentator on early Marx. In his later years Engels developed his materialist interpretation of history, his chief intellectual legacy, which has had revolutionary effects on the arts and social sciences. Terrell Carver traces its source and its effect on the development of Marxist theory and practice, assesses its utility, and discusses the difficulties which Marxists have encountered in defending it. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

Sonidos en contexto is a comprehensive, theory-independent description of Spanish phonetics and phonology for intermediate to advanced students. It provides articulatory descriptions of native pronunciations, as well as practical advice on producing native-like sounds and a logical progression of exercises leading to that end. What sets this book apart from other phonetics texts is its emphasis on real-world examples of spoken Spanish, using native pronunciation modeled in natural contexts. While other available texts stress phonetic theory, this one provides hands-on activities that are entertaining, culturally framed, and relevant to students’ interests and experiences. The book also includes a downloadable instructor’s manual, as well as engaging, colorful exercises in the text, photos of realia, and a high quality and very diverse 6-hour audio program, available online.

This small book is a simplified, abbreviated, and updated version of the author's Free Energy Transduction in Biology, published in 1977 (Academic Press, New York). The present book is meant to be a textbook for a class or for self-study. The first chapter gives a self-contained and elementary discussion of the principles of free energy transduction in biology. Section 5 includes new material on the Onsager coefficients Lij (for systems near equilibrium) not avail able in 1977. Some readers may wish to study the first chapter only. The second chapteris a little more sophisticated, and deals with the so-called diagram method for calculating steady-state probabili ties and cycle fluxes. Although these concepts are useful in the analysis of free energy transduction systems, they have an intrinsic importance and interest. Section 8 summarizes quite recent new results not included in the 1977 book. The third chapter is again a step more sophisticated. Some readers may wish to omit it. Free energy levels of the states in a kinetic diagram are introduced. This topic is primarily of conceptual inter est for ordinary kinetic diagrams but it is essential in understanding muscle contraction (and related systems) at the molecular level. Student Development Theory in Higher Education
Moving beyond the theories traditionally used to describe college student development, this engaging book introduces social psychological theories that address the most relevant issues in higher education today. Covering theories of ecological systems, sense of belonging, prejudice and discrimination, positive psychology, social capital, personality theory, mentoring, and hope theory, this book promotes the understanding and application of social psychological theories to various higher education contexts. Examples from diverse student populations encourage learners’ application to situations in their own contexts. Comprehensive enough to be used as a main text but accessible enough to be used alongside another, this important textbook bridges research, theory, and practice to help practicing and aspiring higher education and student affairs professionals effectively work with college students. Special Features Include:• Reflective exercises that combine theory and practice and help students apply their knowledge solving problems.• Case studies and scenarios for further connections to the reader’s university and college settings.• Guiding questions that encourage students to think beyond the current literature and practice.• List of further readings and references for readers to explore topics in more depth.

This three-part treatment translates the technical language of research monographs on the theory of free energy transfer in biology, making the subject more accessible to those entering the field. Designed for upper-level classes in biochemistry or biophysics, it can also be used for independent study. The first chapter presents a self-contained, elementary discussion of the principles involved; the second chapter is a little more advanced and examines the diagram method for calculating steady-state probabilities and cycle fluxes. The third chapter is increasingly sophisticated, introducing free energy levels of the state in a kinetic diagram. 1989 ed. 2 tables. 36 figures. Index.
