This book contains the proceedings of a symposium held at the College of Charleston, Charleston, South Carolina, USA, 16-20 June 1986. The seed for this symposium arose from a group of physiologists , soU scientists and biochemists that met in Leningrad, USSR in July 1975 at the 12th Botanical Conference in a Session organized by Professor B.B. Vartepetian. This group and others later conspired to contribute to a book entitled Plant Life in Anaerobic Environments (eds. D. D. Hook and R. M. M. Crawford, Ann Arbor Science, 1978). Several contributors to the book suggested in 1983 that a broad-scoped symposium on wetlands would be useful (a) in facilitating communication among the diverse research groups involved in wetlands research (b) in bringing researchers and managers together and (c) in presenting a com­ prehensive and balanced coverage on the status of ecology ami management of wetlands from a global perspective. With this encouragement, the senior editor organized a Plan­ ning Committee that encompassed expertise from many disciplines of wetland scientists and managers. This Committee, with input from their colleagues around the world, organized a symposium that addressed almost every aspect of wetland ecology and management.

The present volume covers the physiology of the visual system beyond the optic nerve. It is a continuation of the two preceding parts on the photochemistry and the physiology of the eye, and forms a bridge from them to the fourth part on visual psychophysics. These fields have all developed as independent speciali­ ties and need integrating with each other. The processing of visual information in the brain cannot be understood without some knowledge of the preceding mechanisms in the photoreceptor organs. There are two fundamental reasons, ontogenetic and functional, why this is so: 1) the retina of the vertebrate eye has developed from a specialized part of the brain; 2) in processing their data the eyes follow physiological principles similar to the visual brain centres. Peripheral and central functions should also be discussed in context with their final synthesis in subjective experience, i. e. visual perception. Microphysiology and ultramicroscopy have brought new insights into the neuronal basis of vision. These investigations began in the periphery: HARTLINE'S pioneering experiments on single visual elements of Limulus in 1932 started a successful period of neuronal recordings which ascended from the retina to the highest centres in the visual brain. In the last two decades modern electron­ microscopic techniques and photochemical investigations of single photoreceptors further contributed to vision research.

Nach der Behandlung der "Riementriebe, Kettentriebe und Kupplungen" in der Fachtagung "Antriebselemente" 1953 wurde diese Veranstaltung im Jahre 1954 U unter den Titel "Zahnrader und Zahnradgetriebe gestellt. Bedeutung und Umfang dieses Stoffes schlossen damit von vornherein iede Hinzunahme von Themen aus anderen Arbeitsgruppen des Fachbereiches aus. In ihrem ersten Teil verzeichnete die Fachtagung 1954 VortrCige aus dem Gebiet der Zahnradfertigung, in einem zweiten Abschnitt Themen uber den Zahnradgetriebe- bau. Aus der Verpflichtung der Fachgemeinschaft, gelegentlich wirtschaftliche Fra- gen auch offentlich zu behandeln, und aus der Erfahrung, daB solche Fragen zu- nehmend das Interesse der Ingenieure finden, wurden den technischen Referaten VortrCige wirtschaftlichen Inhalts uber Gegenwartsprobleme aus der Zahnrader- und Getriebeindustrie zugeordnet. Bei der Ausgestaltung dieser Tagung wurde bewuBt angestrebt, neben deutschen Praktikern und Wissenschaftlern auch hervorragende Vertreter der Wissenschaft und der Industrie des Auslandes zu Wort kommen zu lassen. Damit ist mit dieser Veranstaltung in einem groBeren Umfange eine den nationalen Bereich sprengende Diskussion um wichtige und aktuelle Themen aus der Zahnrad-und Getriebetechnik ermoglicht worden. Die Zahnrader-und Getriebeindustrie hat mit der Tagung "Antriebselemente" 1954 erneut unter Beweis gestellt, daB sie es als eine ihrer Hauptaufgaben ansieht, den Fortschritt der T echnik zu fordern und den Ingenieuren dieienigen Erkenntnisse zu vermitteln, die sie bei ihrer taglichen praktischen Arbeit benotigen. Wie bei der Voriahrs-Veranstaltung wurde damit eine weite Ausstrahlung der gewonnenen Er- kenntnisse und Ergebnisse auf die verschiedenen Verbraucherkreise des Maschinen- baues und der deutschen Industrie bewirkt.

Thomas R. R. Cobb (1823-1862), a Georgia jurist who, perhaps more than any other one person, influenced the form that the "second revolution" took in Georgia (1860-1861), has been described as a prototype of a Southern intellectual. A product of the "Old South," Cobb's influence upon national events (up to and during the Civil War, especially in Georgia) was considerable.
