From the back cover: "May the readers, O God, who venture upon You find that as painful as our loneliness may be, it is not as painful as it could be if You did not oversee it, restrain it, enter into it and sanctify it, even including it in Your original design for Your creation. It is my prayer that something said in this work, either by me or by others I quote, may be a bit of light in the darkness, a fragrant incense in the staleness of a locked room, and a stimulating thought to the numbed mind." In addition to insightful meditations on what Scripture has to say about loneliness, this book also contains reflection questions and carefully selected thought-provoking quotes and poems about loneliness. This book was originally designed as an individual study, but it is suitable for group use and discussion as well.
Many people in the civilized world would agree that mankind is facing a time of enormous crisis, with a situation that is unprecedented in its history. We are experiencing not only the decline of Western civilization, but possibly the end of history as we know it. What are the causes of our plight? Many historians profess to be puzzled about the events which occurred at the end of the eighteenth century, events which must be interpreted as a discontinuity with respect to previous history, and which form the gateway to the modern era. In this book an attempt is made to explain this predicament by examining Western history with regard to its Christian aspects. The narrative runs from the 'decline and fall' of the Roman Empire to the apostasy of the modern age. Its centrepiece is the thousand years of Western history from the Carolingian Renaissance of the ninth century to the French Revolution. This millennial period is compared to the thousand years described in the Book of Revelation, otherwise known as the Christian Apocalypse, and strong parallels are drawn between actual historical events and the prophecies in this Book. If the reader accepts the validity of the thesis, the inevitable conclusion must be that Providence has indeed guided history.
As part of a collaboration between two different groups in chemistry and biochemistry, Thom Sharp presents here his thesis work on the development of new methods for cryoelectron microscopy. Throughout his Ph.D., Thom had to master a whole range of techniques including modelling, molecular biology and microscopy. Using these skills to tackle an outstanding problem, the pursuit of high-resolution structures of peptide-based materials, Thom highlights in this thesis his newly developed methods for analysing and processing this particular type of electron microscopy data. This thesis gives the first molecular description of a de-novo designed peptide-based material. In general, this research will have a huge impact on the peptide assembly field, and also in electron microscopy as it introduces new methods and approaches, all of which are Thom's inventions and are described in this thesis.
