Cases in Hospitality Management

Cases in Hospitality Management

Cases in Hospitality Management: A Critical Incident Approach, Second Edition is one of the few casebooks on the market that focuses specifically on hospitality management. It adopts a critical incident approach, a powerful teaching methodology whereby customers and employees are asked to identify actual experiences regarding service in the hospitality industry – both positive and negative - and then to describe the organization’s response to it. This approach encourages thorough analysis of a prominent issue, thus highlighting the wide range of complexities that face managers on the hospitality industry on a daily basis. Cases involving many segments of the industry - including airlines, railroads, private clubs, conference centers, travel agents, and restaurants – are included, as are fifteen new cases and a new section on hospitality technology.
Provincial Lives

Provincial Lives

Timothy R. Mahoney

Cambridge University Press
2006
pokkari
Provincial Lives, first published in 1999, tells the story of the development of a regional middle class in the antebellum Middle West. It traces the efforts of waves of Americans to transmit their social structures, behavior, and values to the West and construct a distinctive regional middle-class culture on the urban frontier. Intertwining local, regional, and national history, as well as social, immigration, gender and urban history, the author examines how a succession of settlers from 'good' society - farmers and entrepreneurs, followed by capitalists, professionals, and 'genteel' men and women from the urban East - interacted with, accommodated, and compromised with those already there to construct a middle-class society and culture. Provincial Lives explores social change through the lived experience of the actors themselves as they employed their understandings of self, gender, class, and culture to construct social order and contribute to the development of a western urban middle class while still remaining members of a national society and playing a role in shaping the emergence of middle-class culture across the United States.
River Towns in the Great West

River Towns in the Great West

sidottu
This book analyzes, with unprecedented breadth and coverage, the development, maturation, growth, and sudden decline of a distinctive, regional urban economic system that developed along the upper Mississippi River north of St. Louis during the middle third of the nineteenth century. Between 1820 and the Civil War the upper Mississippi River valley was at the center of national and international attention. At the edge of the northern frontier, this area, known as ‘The Great West,’ was the destination of hundreds of thousands of immigrants from the East and from northern Europe. To many, its rich lands, temperate climate, and vast rivers offered an opportunity to establish a better life, as well as a chance to enter, if desired, the mainstream of American life. Drawing from a variety of methods used in historical geography, economic history, systems analysis, and social and urban history, Timothy Mahoney analyzes how early settlement patterns were affected by experience, climate, and geography and how they, in turn, shaped the initial patterns of economic, urban, and transportation development.

Ancient Cahokia and the Mississippians

Timothy R. Pauketat

Cambridge University Press
2004
pokkari
The ancient capital of Cahokia and a series of lesser population centers developed in the Mississippi valley in North America between the eighth and fifteenth centuries AD, leaving behind an extraordinarily rich archaeological record. Cahokia's gigantic pyramids, finely crafted artifacts, and dense population mark it as the founding city of the Mississippian civilization, formerly known as the 'mound' builders. As Cahokian ideas and objects were widely sought, a cultural and religious ripple effect spread across the mid-continent and into the South. In its wake, population migrations and social upheavals transformed social life along the ancient Mississippi River. In this important new survey, Timothy Pauketat outlines the development of Mississippian civilization, presenting a wealth of archaeological evidence and advancing our understanding of the American Indians whose influence extended into the founding moments of the United States and lives on today in American archaeology.

High Towers and Strong Places: A Political History of Middle-earth
High Towers and Strong Places: A Political History of Middle-earth surveys Tolkien's world from Beleriand to Barad-d r and Utumno to Umbar, and from the First to the early Fourth Age. It examines not just types of political systems, but cultural differences, international relations and why there were so many wars over 7000 years of Middle-earth's history. (How those conflicts were waged will be covered in the successor volume, Bright Swords and Glorious Warriors: A Military History of Middle-earth.) If you've ever wondered how Sauron controlled his Orcs, what Gondor owed N menor, the way the Shire was governed or why Dwarves and Elves didn't get along-this is the book for you.
The COIN of the Islamic Realm: Insurgencies & The Ottoman Empire, 1416-1916
Countering terrorist groups is one of the most important military, intelligence, and foreign policy issues in the world today. Over three-quarters of global terrorist organizations claim Islam as their motivation, according to the US State Department's official figures. Most wage violent jihad in order to extend the reach and severity of Islamic law, and to (re)establish a caliphate. They are thus an insurgent threat to existing Muslim states, as well as a terrorist danger to the West. Works on this issue deal almost entirely with how Western powers have fought terrorism and insurgencies: the French in Algeria, the Brits in Malaysia, the Americans in Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan, for example. But Islamic states have had to fight their own Muslim insurrections, across space and time. The Ottoman Empire is the best example of this. Controlling territory on three continents (Asia, Europe and Africa) and lasting for over 500 years, the Ottoman caliphate was challenged by many movements that declared jihad in the name of a competing brand of Islam. Both these insurgencies and Ottoman counterinsurgent responses are worth studying in their own right. But they may also provide insights into how modern versions of these movements could be parried-and defeated. This work is the first book-length treatment of the topic matter, written by an expert in Islamic history with experience in the field of counterterrorism and counterinsurgency.

Denazification in Soviet-Occupied Germany

Denazification in Soviet-Occupied Germany

Timothy R. Vogt

Harvard University Press
2001
sidottu
In his study of Brandenburg, Germany, Timothy Vogt directly challenges both the "antifascist" paradigm employed by East German historians and the "sovietization" interpretive model that has dominated western studies. He argues that Soviet denazification was neither an effective purge of society nor part of a methodical "sovietization" of the eastern zone. Instead, in a detailed study, denazification is pictured as a failure, which fell short of its goals and was eventually abandoned by the frustrated Soviet and German leadership. The case example of Brandenburg is an effective means of putting "flesh and blood" into the study and giving the reader insight into both broader developments and the human actors who propelled events. The result is an analysis that is based not simply on policymakers and their policies, but rather on how policy was continuously reformulated in response to developments on the local level. The study encompasses significant aspects of contemporary European history: everyday life in Nazi Germany, Germany's postwar coming to terms with its Nazi past, the Cold War division of Germany, postwar Soviet policy, and the construction of a one-party communist system in Eastern Europe.
