Norway-based Canadian architect Todd Saunders’ unique approach, set in some of the most remote locations on earth, splices modern sculptural forms with a deeply rooted respect for nature, most famously in his Fogo Island Hotel and artists’ studios in Newfoundland. Rather than imposing themselves upon the countryside and coast, Saunders’ residential buildings seek a sensitive accommodation with the topography and the flora, fauna and treescapes of the landscapes they inhabit. Todd Webb is largely known for his skillful photographic documentation of everyday life and architecture in cities, most notably New York and Paris, as well as his photographs of the American West. This new book showcases a different side of Webb’s work, taken from an assignment that took him to eight African countries. In 1958, Webb was invited by the United Nations to document Togoland (now Togo), Ghana, Kenya, the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland (now Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi), Somaliland (now Somalia), Sudan, Tanganyika and Zanzibar (now merged as Tanzania) over a five-month assignment. Equipped with three cameras and briefed to document industrial progress, he returned with approximately 1,500 colour negatives, but less than twenty of them were published, in black and white, by the United Nations Department of Public Information. The archive was then lost for over fifty years and was only rediscovered by the Todd Webb Archive in 2017. Todd Webb in Africa includes over 150 striking colour photographs from Webb’s African United Nations assignment. This book, and an accompanying touring exhibition, provides expert insight into Webb’s images with contributions by both African and American scholars. Martha Ullman West illustrates how American ballet developed over the course of the twentieth century from an aesthetic originating in the courts of Europe into a stylistically diverse expression of a democratic culture. West places at center stage two artists who were instrumental to this story: Todd Bolender and Janet Reed.Lifelong friends, Bolender (1914–2006) and Reed (1916–2000) were part of a generation of dancers who navigated the Great Depression, World War II, and the vibrant cultural scene of postwar New York City. Superbly produced, with a two-piece foil-stamped cover, beautiful endpapers and an insert documenting a yearlong series of events inspired by Gray’s work, Euclidean Gris Gris features a selection of recent photographic works derived from his exploration of the legacies of colonialism in Africa and several other seminal works. Based in Los Angeles and Ghana, Gray is best known for photography, performance and sculpture that address histories of power in relationship to the African Diaspora. In the new works featured in the catalog, Gray combines photographs from his archive, which he has assembled over decades, including his pictures of individuals and rural scenes in South Africa and Ghana, formal gardens of imperial Europe, constellations and galaxies, and images of musicians, such as Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder.
