Our Socially Awkward Marriage

Our Socially Awkward Marriage

Through a series of warm and uplifting stories, Tom and Linda Peters take you into the heart of their socially awkward marriage. Tom had long suspected that there was something wrong with him, but despite his best efforts, he could never figure out what it was. With the help of Linda, a writer and investigator who he would later marry, Tom went looking for answers that would explain his quirky way of seeing the world. At the age of 47, he was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, a high-functioning form of autism. Raw and personal, this book of essays was first inspired by Tom's challenges with Asperger's Syndrome, but the humorous bite-sized stories apply to any kind of interpersonal communication. The simple solutions that Tom and Linda have discovered - while dressing up a phrenology head or removing a wild opossum from the master bath - have the surprising power to help us learn how to feel more respected, heard and understood in all of our relationships. IntroductionRemember that weird kid in the back of the classroom who just couldn't stop talking about astronomy, and would bring up the discovery of Pluto during lessons about the American Civil War? That was me.My name is Tom Peters. I'm a composer and GRAMMY(R)-nominated classical musician now, and I've played music all over the world. I have a wife named Linda, a college-aged son from my first marriage, and eight different types of stringed instruments at home including six ukuleles. In 2011, at the tender age of 47, I was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome. At that time, Asperger's Syndrome was considered a mild form of autism, characterized by an inability to understand how to interact socially. Those of us with Asperger's - or Aspies, as a term of endearment - tend to have few facial expressions and are apt to stare blankly at other people. It's nothing personal; we really can't help it. Aspies are often accused of being "in their own world" and preoccupied with their own thoughts. We are usually clumsy with uncoordinated movements, are socially awkward, have repetitive routines or rituals, and odd speech and language. Which didn't exactly make me a chick magnet.Regardless of an Aspie's age or place in life, relationships are often a challenge. Being unable to understand nonverbal communication or how you relate to the people around you can cause Aspies to blurt out inappropriate remarks and say just plain odd things, usually at exactly the wrong time. But it's not all bad news. The unusual focus and intensity that goes along with this disorder has helped me to hone my skills as a professional double bass player and later, as a composer of silent film scores. On a personal level, I am honest, dependable and straightforward. I love deeply and always try to do my best. I don't play mind games. I don't know how. And now, as a middle-aged adult, I'm in a happy, healthy relationship. My wife, Linda, is a writer who used to work with adults with mental, emotional and developmental disabilities. It was Linda's idea for me to share some anecdotes about what it felt like to be on the high-functioning end of the autism spectrum. She thought it might help someone to hear me articulate the feelings involved in some of the unique challenges I face. Around the same time, we also started writing articles together about how we were making communication work so well in our Asperger's relationship. This book is a collection of some of those articles and blog posts about our lives. Most of the stories are about being on the spectrum, or about living with someone who is on the spectrum. Almost all the stories take place in the context of our Asperger's relationship and subsequent marriage. We hope that you enjoy reading them

The founder of Menlo Innovations and author of the business culture cult classic Joy, Inc offers an inspirational guide to leaders seeking joy in the challenge of leading others. Rich Sheridan's Joy, Inc. told the story of how his tiny software company in Ann Arbor, Michigan achieved success and renown by embracing offbeat culture and human-centered values. In Chief Joy Officer, he turns his attention from culture to leadership, and draws on his experience running Menlo and consulting elsewhere to offer a wise, provocative guide on how anyone can build leadership capacity for joy within their own organization. Chief Joy Officer offers sage, hard-won advice to any manager or leader who yearns to make more of an impact on the lives of others, including: * Self-understanding is the cornerstone for every virtue of leadership: authenticity, trust, humility, and optimism. * Good leaders make more leaders: Learn to judge your performance not on whether people are doing what they're told, but whether they're developing independent leadership capacity. * Influencing up is just as important is influencing down: how to encourage different thinking in those above you in your organizations. Filled with colorful anecdotes from Sheridan's personal journey and wisdom from many leadership mentors, Chief Joy Officer offers an approachable, down-to-earth philosophy and practice that will help even the most disillusioned of middle managers bring a renewed sense of purpose to their work building others.

In Search of Excellence has long been a must-have for the boardroom, business school and bedside table, and continues to influence the thinking of leaders and managers across the globe today. Based on a study of forty-three of America's best-run companies from a range of sectors - consumer goods, technology, services - the book identifies eight common 'attributes of excellence' that made these organisations successful. Though many of the profiled companies have since lost their edge (or disappeared completely), these eight management principles, each highlighted in a chapter in the book, have shown themselves to be timeless. These simple business truths, so eloquently encapsulated by Peters and Waterman, are proof that the fundamentals of management - a focus on people, customers and value, entrepreneurship and excellence - ring as true today as they ever did. In Search of Excellence is a seminal business book, worthy of a place on the bookshelves of anyone who wants to understand how effective management works in practice.

This book deals with risk management and the organisation of banking in Swedish savings banks alongside the development in other European countries. The period of analysis begins with the establishment of the first savings banks in 1820 and ends in 1910. During this period, banking developed as a well-functioning system for deposits and credits. The book focuses on this development from a theoretical perspective connected to risk management and the role of trust and legitimacy in credits and savings. The analysis deals with the overall development of the Swedish banking system and the role of savings banks as well as bank connections with different groups of customers. Of interest to financial historians, academics, and researchers, it also analyses the role of insider lending and the practical aspects of granting credits, such as the use of collaterals and the level of interest rates to compensate higher risks.

Step Away from the War: How I Built a Life Around the Vietnam War
What does a juvenile delinquent, steelworker, dope-smoking hippie, pansexual, decorated combat Vietnam vet, Unitarian Universalist, Doctorate of Business Administration, and tenured professor all have in common? The author of this memoir tries all these titles and more as he attempts to describe a life of considerable contrast, twists and turns, and a long-term battle of making sense of it all.In 1968, the oldest of ten Catholic kids in a steelworker family living in the blue-collar suburbs of Detroit found himself faced with a decision. Was it being drafted into the U.S. Army and a tour in Vietnam, Canada, or prison?...Tom did his tour. What started out as a memoir of his one year of service as a combat infantry grunt in Vietnam, Tom decided to frame the experience with life before and after. Hippies drafted in the late 60s had short hair and no beards in the Vietnam War, but they did have tell-tale indications. Helmets or hats with a peace sigh or flower and a faint scent of marijuana usually gave them away. Tom soon found out he was not alone in this situation. The reader follows the adventures of a small band of combat hardened, dope-smoking draftees through the thickets, rice paddies, base camps, and foxholes of South Vietnam the year after the TET offensive with one common objective, to stay alive for 365 days and go home. To escape the omnipresence of violence and death, Peters eventually turns to LSD for a short fateful period. Though decorated for heroism in combat, the author and friends are reluctant warriors more concerned with each other's safety than winning any battles in a war they're convinced is wrong and doomed. Spec. 4 Peters survives the year and returns to the steel mill where his father works. But the war follows him, as it does with all veterans and the memoir traces his footsteps through a battle against survivor's guilt, substance abuse, depression, and an obstacle-course of self-rejection and self-realization. Once home from the war, Tom can't assume he's safe, especially at the steel mill where dangers are as present as 'Safety First' signs. Peters explains his need for a high-intensity replacement for combat by seeking one of the most demanding and thrilling crane operating jobs, the hot metal and ladle cranes. Tom's description of a 'runner' points out the adrenaline rushing nature of this crazy, little-known procedure. Though raising a family has a sense of normalcy...bouts of depression, a nagging suicidal thought, and mounting pressures of trying to go to college and work at the mill end in divorce. Peters eventually finds himself with a Bachelor's and Masters' degree and an opportunity to retire from the mill after 30 years and head out west...a long-term dream. Life in California, a new wife and a fourth child at the age of 55 make for interesting times. Add a Doctorate degree and a successful professorship and this memoir culminates with a return trip to Vietnam. Enjoy
