Tämä kirja kertoo omakohtaiset muistot sodan jälkeisen sukupolven kokemuksista ”sotalapsina”, ajasta, jolloin nuoret joutuivat kokoamaan elämän sirpaleita yhteen ja uskomaan tulevaisuuteen ilman yhteiskunnan suojaverkkoja. Jolloin lapsia kasvatettiin työntekoon, nöyryyteen ja häpeämään itseään. Kiitosta jaettiin niukasti, jos ollenkaan. Mummu oli se syli, johon pahimmalla hetkellä pakenin. Olen kiitollinen vanhemmilleni, isovanhemmilleni, sisarilleni ja yhteisölle, missä kasvoin. Opin, mitä tarkoittaa vastuu itsestä ja toisesta. Opin, mitä tarkoittaa rehellisyys ja ahkeruus. Vanhempani taistelivat eteenpäin, opettivat oikean ja väärän, opettivat olemaan vahva, katsomaan ohi pahan päivän. Elämäni on ollut pitkä ja siinä on tapahtunut paljon, tässä tarjoilen vain nuoren Tuulan muistoja.

Kertomus Tuula Nousiaisesta, joka ensimmaisenä suomalaisena naisena kiipesi Cho Oyu:n 8201 metriä korkealle huipulle ja toisena suomalaisena ylitti tuon maagisen 8000 metrin rajan Veikka Gustafssonin jälkeen. Samalla tämä kirja on myös kertomus hänestä, suurenmoisesta suomalaisesta naisesta, joka teki unelmistaan totta ja toteutti itseään. Kertomus naisesta, joka jäi leskeksi vain 29-vuotiaana, kolmivuotiaan tyttären yksinhuoltajaksi 70-luvun Suomessa. Naisesta, joka sisukkaasti tyttärensa kasvatti periaatteitaan seuraten; kannustaen aina yrittamään, reilusti ja aina opetuksensa perustellen. Naisesta, joka menehtyi ihan liian aikaisin, vain 57-vuotiaana, vaikeaan äkilliseen sairauteen, tämän päivän vitsaukseen, syöpään.

Despite growing awareness of feminist sensibilities, single women remain polarized in the popular imagination. Either old maids or power women, they remain defined in relation to men--women who can't get, or, unnaturally, women who don't want a man. Through extensive historical research as well as interviews with dozens of women from San Francisco, London, and Helsinki, Tuula Gordon here forcefully exposes the artificial nature of this perceived dichotomy. The single woman is mistakenly seen to be a product of the twentieth century.
